If I was chosen as a beta tester, I would be honored and take the task seriously.

I did sound kind of official didn't I... I should have also mentioned that it would be a lot of fun beta testing.

I have no standing at Matrix but my suggestions for beta testers are:
* Get up a history of good thoughtful posts showing that you understand the board game. Patrice has an excellent body of WIF research on other web sites which should help him on the day.
* Show an understanding of the issues involved in creating a computer game. Developers aren't perfect but I don't think they are impressed by people who demand the impossible (not pointing fingers here so don't get paranoid). Any background in computer development might help.
* Contribute research. One idea is to look at the ways that other strategic games have worked out their sequence of play and analyse whether it would work for CWiF. Post your results in the Forum.
* Suck up to Maurice. I believe he will pick the beta team :)
* Wait till FPG ships. Nothing happening till then.

Those are my humble suggestions. No guarantee they will work.

Just curious, since cWiF is dependent on FPG shipping, does anyone know when that will be?

I would like to continue my playtesting for Cwif. I was a chief play tester for Wif FE and have played through Cwif many times. If there are any thoughts or suggestions please feel free to let me know.

Matrix has repeatedly advised that they will release FPG (and MWiF and all other games) when it is ready and not before.
They have also repeatedly advised that they will not commit to a release schedule until they are sure they can fulfil it.
I support both of those initiatives.

They also promise that any betatester who discusses release schedules will be hung, drawn, quartered and struck off the beta-testing list so I feel your pain at not knowing but I can't comment further without forfeiting my own shot at MWiF beta-testing. You need to get a response from the official Matrix types. Maybe post the question in the FPG Forum... sometime within the two weeks... before the question becomes irrelevent

Or perhaps I can quote from what Eric Rutins (Matrix Administrator) said in the FPG Forum in the "Progress" thread..

We are aiming for early January, no kidding. Start planning now...

Don't look to close in the FPG... You might get blinded by the lase on target...

FPG is really close to popping out. cWiF... Well it will be while... Greyshaft hit on the head though about getting on the beta test floor.

Still thinking of you guys and trying to help. I suggest wannabe BetaTesters think of a specialty that will round out the beta-team. For example, in FPG I volunteered for the jobs that no-one wants such as writing the manual and Tutorial and a number of AARs in the FPG Forum. I'm doing the same in Empires in Arms and will offer that again for MWiF. Documentation is tedious but essential, and I'm sure that putting my hand up for that job helped me in the door with FPG.

Here's some other ideas:

  • Can anyone get up a 4 PC home network with an XP machine, XP Home machine, Win 98 machine and a Win 95 machine... well, maybe forget Win 95 :) Become the MWiF networking testbed.
  • Get a list of all the WiF web sites and be the person who knows what info is where on the web. Patrice probably wins this one hands down ...http://perso.wanadoo.fr/froon/Links/Wargame.htm but there's no harm in trying to beat him.
  • I heard there's Cyberboard version of CWiF out there. Find it and start a game of cardboard Wif and write up the AAR in the MWiF forum.

In other words, don't just sit there doing nothing for the next two months then whinge that you didn't get on the BetaTest list.

I have played the Marinacci cWiF beta at great length and have been playing WiF since 1986. I'd love to be a beta tester. I have been beta-testing for a competing product (a good one -- HOI2) but I think that WiF has something different to offer. I teach history at the college level and have used computer games in teaching for some time. I'd love to see CWif become something that I could use to teach grand strategy and politics to students of 20th century history.

I would also be up for further beta-testing. I have a roommate who also has played the game (introduced me to it actually) and the computers set up for head-to-head or network play.

One of the great aspects of WiF is the relatively gradual learning curve; The two training scenarios (Barbarossa and Guadalcanal) teach the mechanics very effectively. I would be content if the computer could play as well as a moderately intelligent person who had played each of the training scenarios once. If Matrix delivers an AI that plays close to as strong as a veteran WiFer, I will be very impressed!

If the only way the AI can be a challenge is that it cheats then so be it in my opinion. Lots of games out there allow this to give the AI some backbone. It could work in WIF as well assuming the AI was basically functional.
With the old WIF beta could you PBEM? cant remember.

A arse kisser or someone who knows what to say to get on the beta team will never get the same results as someone who has 100's of hours playing time. 10 years exp is greater than 2 months of trying to learn what you should know already.
