How does one go about transporting the air groups off the us west coast to lets say Pearl? I am assuming they need transported somehow? The time period I am questioning is Dec 41, so I dont see any CVE's like in UV.

Thanks for any info.

Just load them up in AKs. They will arrive in disrepair and it will take a while before they are all flyable.

Just make sure they are not assigned to west coast command, as they will not load. You get CVE's later on in the game. The legandary long Island terns up fairly early in the game.

Load the units using "troop load". You will be given a list of units to load and you take it from there. Even the small AKs can transport huge airgroups.

Consider dividing the air group before you load it. Takes 3X as many AK, but it divides by 3 the pain of having an air unit sunk on an AK before it has a chance to unload.

These guys are right, but a few points for clarification. When you select "load troops" (which will load supplies with the troops) or "load troops only" (which loads no supply - quicker load/unload), you will only see land and air units that are capable of being loaded. If the unit is still attached to the West Coast, which is a restricted headquarters, the unit will not appear on the list of units that can be loaded. If it doesn't show up, check the HQ it is assigned to.

As for dividing the air unit prior to loading on three separate ships - very smart. Keep in mind that, for the Allies, only groups are capable of being split. Your squadrons - both fighter and bomber - are already at the lowest operational level and cannot be further split or broken down. In fact, you're not even given the option to divide the unit.

And as another side point.

If the unit can be upgraded, do that then load the units.

Upgraded units have to be built from the ground up.

Transported units have to be built from the ground up once they arrive.

May as well build them up once.

This may be something to think about. If a unit can be upgraded in a week or so, and is on the W Coast, may want to wait for them to be eligible for upgrade then ship them over to Oz.

Hi, This is the kind of thing I'm talking about. (Where I say I am seeing a lot of things that never occured to me) You would think I would have been doing this. But then I almost never crate AC as Japan and I have not sent any airgroups out of SF in any active game.
(but I would have loaded the entire group onto a single AK)

And as ANOTHER side point . . .

Air units cost 4 preparation points per aircraft present (i.e., whether repairing or flyable) to change headquarters. Since most of the air units that start the game on the West Coast are attached to the West Coast headquarters, you'll have to change HQ's to move them to the front. Consider that it is cheaper to change HQ with fewer aircraft, most of west coast units start understrength and, if you set them to "no replacements," they will not gather any additional aircraft. Hence, in some cases, when preparation points are dear, it may make sense to put some of the West Coast units on "no replacemens" until after you can afford to change their headquarters. After you've changed headquarters you can ship them anywhere and then have them fill out their roster.

Excellent advice. I had been creating 3-4 AK TFs to transport one air unit and noticed (once they were out to sea) that all the air group were aboard one ship and the others were empty. Two problems: 1. all my eggs are in one basket, waiting for a sub to sink them, and 2. I have two or three ships sailing with no cargo. What poor planning!!!
