July 1942, Allied vs AI. Of course, that is after 3 restarts and 6 months working on War Plan Orange.

What is War Plan Orange i keep hearing about it? I mean I know about it historically, but what is the reference to the game? Is this a new campaign or something?

It was a mod for WiTP, but is more than likely going to be picked up by Matrix and sold as an expansion.

What it is are new campaigns and assorted scenarios, covering possible fleet actions between the US and Britain against Japan in the 1920s. It includes dreadnoughts, predreadnoughts, armoured cruisers, and even ships that were never completed such as the Lexington class battlecruiser. Also, it comes with a variety of 1920s aircraft. The whole thing comes complete with new graphics and databases, and has been the culmination of about 6 and a half months worth of work on my part. Some useful threads with screenshots and other info about the project you might like are:

"Happy New Year From War Plan Orange"
"War Plan Orange Announcement"
"3 New WPO Screenshots"
"War Plan Orange December Update"
"War Plan Orange November Update"

Pretty much everything earlier than that is concept art and early, early, early screens of the project. Hope that gives you an idea of what it is and what you can do in it.

Wow, Tanker. That sounds pretty awesome. It seems like there would be more ship to ship combat in that one. Kinda like the good ole days, but with steel dreadnoughts. I can't wait to have a go at that one. I love WITP. However, I would like to see a bit more ship to ship combat. There is a thread currently running about lack of ship to ship. I truly understand dominance of air power, but a guy can still dream! Anyway, it sounds like your hard work is the answer to my cravings! let me know if you need a guinea pig or anything!

I have a silly question about strategy. What is the answer to a dreadnought "deathstar" tactic, in your opinion? Concentration of force seems to be one of the keys in the standard WiTP.

Well, to quote a British naval strategist, "To sink a dreadnought, one must first open its hull to the sea."

The short answer: A Deathstar of your own.

If you don't have it, then submarines and destroyers. A crapload of them. Send in so many that a torpedo has to get through. With torpedo protection not nearly as good as it is in WW2, a single torpedo can be fatal to the smaller predreadnoughts, and can cripple a dreadnought. Submarines will also be a valuable asset, as ASW isn't as good either.

Another, more true to life tactic is supply. Take for instance, the US vs a Japanese death star. The only way that death star can operate more than once or twice (on extended operations) is to take the PI, and move fuel from there*. So, if you can use cruisers and submarines to sink most of Japans transports, then he cannot use his deathstar effectively.

*Production is off for War Plan Orange. I did this to speed up release. However, you still must take the PI. Japan and Manchukuo produce enough supply to feed its armies, so long as they do not fight, and enough fuel for "routine" naval operations. However, if the Japanese player wishes to use his battleships, he has enough fuel for only a limited number of long range, full scale deployments, i.e. he must take the PI (which produces a crapload of fuel.... think of WPO's fuel as WitPoil in some cases." Thus, after the initial action of taking the PI (also necessary to gain VPs to win), the only way to keep Japan's dreadnoughts fed is to either base them in Manila, or move the fuel produced by Manila (and surrounding bases) back to Japan for use later.

So, to counter the US deathstar, all Japan has to do is 1) Keep the US fleet from reaching Manila, and 2) Keep the US from getting fuel to PH, then Wake, and then Guam.

Aircraft can also contribute to knocking out the deathstar, although you will be more likely to cripple a dreadnought, rather than sink one.

I recently played Lemurs scenario 26, as Allied vs AI, up to beginning of Nov, '43. I had 37,500 points to the Japanese 16,800. Sunk 1562 ships (for 16592 points), destroyed 7300 aircraft/points.

It seemed as if most of the Japanese merchant shipping was gone. I had a buttload of subs patrolling the empty seas, twiddling their thumbs. The AI was even using barges to keep Truk supplied from Japan.

I occupied Hokkaido and Sakhalin for the poop and giggles of it.

This was still only a 2-1 victory in points. Sheesh. Whadda I have to do? The only way to get a 4-1, it seemed to me, was to occupy all of Japan. Even getting another 12000-15000 points for a 3-1 victory in '44 seemed like a lotta work at the time. I sure wasn't gonna get it by 1 Jan, '44.

(Question for you veterans: Are the autovictory conditions only checked for the first of the year, or the first of each month, or every day, or what??)

I deleted the game save when I upgraded to version 1.4... I have had a hard time getting up the motivation for another "first turn" setup marathon.

OK. Thanks! Sounds like it will be interesting to play!

Stupid question time:

I have read in other threads (dealing with the supply situation in China, for example) that when you take an enemy base (Chunking, for example, generates 300 free supply there every turn), the freebie supplies generated there are permanently shut down. (This means the orginal owner will never get it turned back on, if he retakes the base.)

Does this feature interfere with this?

You have production turned off. How does this effect my worries above?

Hrm.... that I'll have to back to you on. However, if nothing else then I will make it so that the PI will have enough of a Stockpile that the Japanese should be fine.... and if nothing, nothing else then I make it VPs only.

Just so you can see where I remember seeing this... pg13 or so in the main forum now:

RE: lanchow keeps getting suplies a... (in reply to wild_Willie2)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

quote:

ORIGINAL: wild_Willie2

Hi, in my 1.4 started game as the japanese after I capture lanchow from the chinese it keeps on getting "free" supplies.

This is NOT realistic (the rest of china is now gathering supplies for japan )

maybe a tweak needed?

The free supply number will always show in the base screen no matter who owns the hex because of the way the data is entered in the location data base, the game code stops the supply from arriving if the base is no longer controlled by the original owning player. A simple on/off switch in the code.

My most advanced is a PBEM which is at 2nd March 43.

I play the allies and we are on 3 day turns.

The rest of my PBEM's are March - July 42 in range.

(In all 4 I made the mistake of attacking in the ealry game with my US CV's)

It is only now that I get to early 43 in one game and need aircover for offensive ops that I realise what a distrous mistake it is to risk your CV's.

Ach well you live and learn a all the beta testers more or less said dont risk your CV's you will regret it but did I listen......

Playing as Allies against the AI I made it to about August 1943. Then v1.3 came out, then 1.40 and I kept restarting. Now, under 1.4, I am up to September 1942.

1AUG42, Allies vs AI

Pearl Harbor - minimal damage. I opted for the variable start and lucked out by having the AAF on full aler tan amanged to shoot down about half the IJN forces. Only lost 1 BB and a few smaller ships.

Having played naval strategist before, I opted to play the game using the last version of WPO: Rainbow Five/WPL-46. This Mid-41 plan called for the reinforcement of Wake and sending supplies and aid to Oz to help them keep Rabaul. At Wake, the Lex didn't run back to PH Capt Sherman was ordered to reinforce the island and in doing so sank the AI invasion fleet and got a glancing blow against Ryujo. At Rabaul, I managed to get the "Bird Battalions" into Rabaul before the AI could invade. I sent the 1st USMC there as quickly as they could go. The first elements got to Rabaul about the same time as the AI. The ABDA command was ordered to fall back into defensible positions as quickly as possible, and they ended up concentrated on Timor and the NW tip of Sumatra. I tried to march the Brits out of Singapore, but the computer kept sending them right back!! That's about where the lines stabilized. Tarawa remained in US possession as I landed 1/3 of an RCT there (a BCT/Battalion Combat Team?). The AI got no further than Celebes & Truk towards Rabaul/New Guinea and it has driven it "crazy" ever since.

In about Mid-January the Allies started to get enough resupply to make advances ... all in line with WPL-46 ... and managed to take Makin, then Mili. The AI keeps sending ships to their doom in a Truk-Rabaul version of the Tokyo Express. By 1JUL42 I owned almost all of the Marshalls, all of the Gilberts, Marcus Is., all of the Solomons, Bismark Archipeligo, New Guinea, the ABDA areas SE of Sulawesi/Celebes. Overall in a good place to hold the AI and begin to advance. it is M+270 and I am ready to hold what I have taken and develop my Base One at Eniwetok (I am about 90 days behind schedule)

On 7JUL42, the AI decided to seal its fate. It sent a 7 CV TF against Rabaul. In a 5 day runnign battle, I managed to sink all 7 CVs (Soryu, Junyo, Akagi, Shokaku, Kaga, Zuiho, Hiryu) and many escorts. To date I have lost Tennessee (@ PH), Colorado & New Mexico to Bettys with torpedoes, and Lexington to a sub attack. I got the Lex back to a freindly port, but the DC couldn't fix the torpedo damage and she eventually flooded and sank at the pier. I am finally beating the AI on ship and aircraft points. It'll take a lot to win back the army/base points but the gap is only some 2500 poins right now.

If I'm lucky the war will be over by Summer of 44.

Which raises another question ... how does the game end? Will Hirohito surrender or will I have to blockade, plan an invasion and then nuke Japan?

Automatic victory = 4x's vp's more than opponent in 1943
=3x's vp's in 1944
=2x's vp's in 1945

or ignore auto victory and nuke them but don't do it more than twice or you negate all of your great playing up until then.

Tankerace... why not require a certain level of "Resources" to be captured for Japanese capital ship use. The "Free supply" mentioned above are those at the few Chinese bases that get an automatic supply in the same way that Karachi, Bombay, San Francisco and Seattle do. But since Japan went to war for the resources, the resources on the map can be used to reflect the coal needs of the older vessels.

Jan 43 AI game. Evact'd Sing, got proportion of the troops out to Sumatra then India, the rest died heroically. Held Japs at Impala and kicked them back out of Akabar (Spelling?) on the coast. Moved dutch back to sumatra and Timor. Still holding Sabajara and Timor in 43 although it has cost me 20 transport sunk and 30 damaged + most of the dutch fighter force getting supplies into malang. Dutch and Raf/RAAf bombers and torp planes smacked the hell out of invasion force which is probably why i managed to hold sabajara with out re-enforcing with other allied troops. Timor was mainly held by the Aus bird forces. The Rabul garrison was removed by fast AP's covers by Aus and NZ cruisers, the engineers went to pm and the troops to Timor.

Hold PM and Lunga, Nidi, and Baker Islands with marnies and cd engineers and lots of mines. About to smack the hell out of Tarawa and Makin Islands with seven carriers 6 battleships + escorts and two full divison of troops back by engineers, arty HQ and a baseforces. Lost 1 Achilies to betties and loads of DD, mostly flush deckers to IJN subs and quite a few subs. Lost no major naval units yet although a lot have been damaged especially RN BB's Have damaged two jap BB and one carrier but sunk nothing larger than a CL.

AI has not touched PM or lunga apart from Bombing and has not really raided the IO either.....

I read that, but what does it mean? You can nuke the entire home islands back to the stone age and lose anyway?

A small scenario for an atomic attack would be interesting to play and see if the IJA can shoot the plane down. Knowing my luck.....

Also, there was never an option presented to replicate the Doolittle Raid in Apr42. Hornet was on the west coast and I halfway expected to have a unit of 16 B-25Cs show up in SFO.

Sorry no Doolittle Raid. There is a 1 grade penalty for using 3 or more A Bombs. So that if you win decisively but use 3+ A bombs your victory is reduced to marginal.
