Retreating ground units question

Retreating ground units question - 1/17/2005 5:19:21 PM

Status: offline 		Is there any way of telling in what direction a ground unit defeated in combat will retreat?
I know retreating means a degree of panic, but I've seen full units retreating into the hex its attacker moved from, away from any form of safety.

Even if the unit allready moved 50 miles towards safety, it was able to retreat in the oposite direction after a very light attack. This would mean a 110 mile movement straight through enemy lines....

Anyway, as there is so much content about land-movement in this forum the answer should probably be available, but I have not been able to find it so far...

Any help?

Status: offline 		A unit will generally retreat in the direction of the nearest supply source, along the easiest path. An exception to this are ZOC rules. A friendly LCU will always attempt to retreat into a friendly ZOC hex and cannot retreat into an enemy controlled hex.

Thanks!

I was looking into the ZOC thing, but a retreat towards supply sources could answer a few questions.
Could this mean some of my units did choose supply over safety?

I'll study overland movement and overland supply some more before asking more questions.....

A game that requires me to study things.....what have I gotten myself into

1. Give monitor screen the finger.

2. Pull plug out of wall.

Divorce completed. Re-approachment can commence after lengthy pub session.

That kind of divorce could still become a costly affair....


You guys make me fear the consequences of committing to this game.

At least we can fix bugs in WitP ... ever try and get your wife to change? Simpler to change wifes

There are, unfortunately, exceptions to this. In my game, i have been trying to retrieve a unit ensconsed in the jungle. There was only one source of supply on his island - the unit retreated into the jungle directly away from it. I've been airdropping supplies for 1 1/2 months while this unit makes 1 mile/day back in the direction it should have gone. Curiously, when it retreated, it said it was retreating towards the base, but instead went away from it.

It's never going to reach this base, but i hope to get it to the coast so i can pick it up by sub (a bit at a time).

Think of a hex grid where your unit has 1 enemy in each of the 3 hexes sw, s, se, and the base is 2 hexes s ... to get to the base, the unit traces it's supply nw then sw then sw to get around the enemy unit. As long as you are fairly close to a base, it is possible to trace a pretty radical supply path.

OK - figure this out then:

My base unit is at Cagayan base. I am recalling this from some weeks ago but I think this is it. No other enemy units around excpt at Butuan. All other bases on Mindanao taken except Zamboanga. The enemy lands at Cagayan (and may have moved from Butuan also) - eventually push out my base force. Now, there is a road running towards Zamboanga and one running south. No enemy units have been on these roads. My base unit is pushed out - but instead of retreating to 41,59 towards Zamboanga, it "retreats towards Zamboanga" but goes to 42,60. Since Cotabato has been occupied, there can be no weird ZOC in 41,59 or that would cut off all supply and the unit would have been eliminated instead.

So why would it go to 42,60? Now i have been trying to move back to 41,59 for the last 40 moves or so.

well, maybe - but it was supply for the Japanese. Only Zamboanga was left when the base force was forced out of Cotabato (falling to the Japanese). Zamboanga was the only base left. The messages that flash up indicated unit was going to Zamboanga. It had zero supplies in it IIRC - don't know if that had anything to do with it (the weird path).

Status: offline 		One odd thing is that the Russian bases appear to be considered in retreat paths, even prior to Soviet activiation. For example, I've seen units from Yenen retreat towards Oboto (sp?). In an ideal world, the Russian bases shouldn't be considered in retreats until activation, but for me this falls in the "it'd be nice if they fixed it but it's not the biggest fish to fry" category.
