Hello everyone, I am interested in getting WitP. but I am a little worried about the depth!

I played pacific war (a tiny bit, ie. never finished a scenario) and liked it. it seems from some of the reviews and things i've read, that i would ahve to control every little bit of the war to play a good game.

now that sounds like fun, but i don't want to get burnt out on a game that i spent $70 on before i even learn how to fully play it.

so is it possible to automate some things and work up to absolute control?

Don't worry about it. I was the same way. Had Pacific War. Liked it, but could never stick with it. This game has all the depth you'll ever want. But yes, the computer AI (ie your staff) can take care of a great many things. Now those of us who

a) Love to micromanage and/or
b) Are very intolerent

minimze what the computer AI does. Will it do stupid things from time to time, sure. It's a computer. Are there some aspects that you don't want to give to the computer, sure. But,
it's your personal preference. Personally, in alot of things, I don't mind letting the computer run with it. It's screw up but so might I and I'm too impatient to go everywhere, every turn. I may never match up against some of the better players, but I sure have fun.

You can leave some areas of the game on computer control (or let the computer run your submarines), but I've never tried it with WITP. Instead, I tried some of the smaller scenarios, that don't cover the whole map or involve thousands of units, until I felt that I had the idea, and only then tried to play the full-blown campaign game.

Another thing you can do to ease into things is play the Allies in the campaign game. You have very few forces on the map at the start, and lots of reinforcements on the way, so even if you make mistakes they won't cost you too much. (Just keep your carriers out of the way for the first few months.)

I've enjoyed WITP greatly, and recommend it highly.

I for one, highly recommend WiTP- and UV to for that matter. So long as you don't mind getting addicted and loosing some sleep. And you can let the AI control a lot if you wish, or you can control it. Also, the campaigns start small and grow, so your moving a few units at first and before you know it, your moving MANY units. For what its worth once I got UV, I played nothing else, and now that I�ve moved up to WiTP, I play nothing but it.

There is a certain amount of satisfaction in conceiving of a plan, implementing it and having it turn out as you hoped. This is very much a �thinking game.�

Well i've gone and done it... I am downloading WitP as i write this. although the price is decieving... this game cost me $140 instead of $70... I forgot about the payoff to my wife!

anyways, thanks for the replys...

I chose this over Hearts of Iron 2 because even though i am a huge paradox fan, i'm tired of the same old game engine... so thanks again..

tho i have played the demo for HOI2 and IMHO its not worth it

very good choosing WITP over HOI2

well i started the tutorial and a little over 2 hours later i finished 3 turns... gah...so much information... it looks like it will be a blast, just got to get over the learning curve. thankfully I have time to read at work, so i will study the manual this weekend....

i think i am quite a ways off from the big scenarios! ha.

but it is fun.. mind numbing, up to late kinda fun...

BEST.WARGAME.EVER.

Is as simple as that. If you -really- like WW2 strategy this is the non-plus-ultra game ever found on the market. Of course that means a LOT of micromanagement, a LOT of work to be done on each turn, a LOT of careful thinking and long and well-thought planning, and a VERY VERY LONG time to play it to it's best. For lovers of games like Warhammer or Age of Empires, this game will simply suck, because to win you don't need to be the faster mouse clicker on earth, to win you must be the most intelligent guy.

BTW I don't think in a campaign game the Japanese player has a lot of odds to win (slight ones but if the game is still running by summer'42 he stands none), but if he gives me a TRUE run for my money on the road to Japan, I take it that he has won the fight.

I recall Mogami (a moderator of this forums) saying elsewhere that he didn't play a game when he ran WITP. What he did is to FIGHT A WAR. I agree with him. And the simple fact that WITP allows you to take it such seriously is the definitive proof that War in the Pacific has gone beyond any strategy title ever published. And I've owned a lot of them since 1993 (when I got my first PC), so I've got a lot of titles to compare.

On the price: It may seem expensive for being a PC Game, but you'll be rewarded by years of fun. No kidding, the great thing about this game is that is LOOOOONG...and that each time you replay it (and by PBEM ,and with if you do with different opponents much more), it's totally different.

Now go out and find the last copy/photocopy/same-game-in-different-clothes of any of the thousand no-brain-fast-click RTS games out there in the market. Compare it to what WITP offers. Then compare it's replayability with that of WITP. No matter how you look at it, if you like strategy games WITP is the CHEAPEST game -EVER- when (quality+gamelife)/price equation comes into consideration.

And I won't even talk about those First person shooters you buy by 50$ and once you've finished them (in 3 days) they win a permanent place on the self...50$ for 3 days, or a week at the most if you get hooked.

If you get hooked with WITP you can start 3 parallel Campaign PBEM games and keep them running for months. And then start some more. You'll cripple your social life, but you can do it and enjoy it as much as the first day.

This is the game I've payed most money for. However, it's also the cheapest I've ever bought.

You won't regret your decision to buy it :).
