I'm playing the AI in a slight modification of Lemurs 1.4 mod, and....

having previously endured endless annihilation at the hands of the KB Death Star to ships/bases in December 41 - January 42, I borrowed a tactic discussed elsewhere on the boards and put together a small picket line of 6-8 subs running from Sumatra to Borneo.

Lucky for me -- even with Allied Sub Doctrine turned on -- one of my Dutch subs, KXIII, put a torpedo into Hiryu and the entire Death Star turned around and headed back to Japan (as far as I can tell)!!

I know I'll have to fight them again in the future, but I'm almost as happy as the British after Dunkirk. At least there's a way -- sometimes -- to hold them back long enough to properly evacuate the DEI.

Understand the sub doctrine, what it means is your subs will save up their torpedoes for *exactly* this kind of attack then unload 'em all at the CV

You are actually more likely to get multiple hits on the big ships with doctrine on.

Frag, I thought that the "Allied sub doctrine" had a different basis than the "Japanese sub doctrine." I agree that the Japanese version will have the results of which you are speaking, but it was my impression was that ASD was emplaced to reduce the number of attacks made by allied subs against overwhelming odds. I know that many people are claiming that ASD has the effect of giving allied subs Japanese sub doctrine, but so far that has not been my experience. In your conversations with the developers, have they ever confirmed the actual implementation of ASD as advertised, or that it was implemented instead as JSD?

July 1943. Allied Skywalker Fleet(against AI) : "Skratch one KB Death Star".
Most of KB starting to host large pelagics all around Pacific; i.e., large fish
now call KB home.

Oh, Hornet torped by Sub, and I lost a CVE at Salamaua last night.

Hi, I had the KB lurking off Pearl still on Dec 13th. Bombing all the time.
Finally I couldn't stand it any more.
I had decided around Dec 9th to move my CV groups to Pearl but since I don't fly groups on missions the turn I transfer them (my rule not the games) I had to wait for certain conditions.
1. The airfields had to be usable
2. KB had to be out of range of airfield attacks or my groups would be caught on the ground before I could use them

Around the 13th KB was up north refueling and the airfields were open so I moved the fighters and Divebombers to Pearl. The torpedo planes were out of range because I didn't want my CV getting too close.

The next turn I assigned them to naval strikes.

I was slaughtered. The fighter and divebomber and the other land groups were wrecked.
BUT....
I scored 2 hits on 1 CV 1 hit on another and set them both on fire. (A long way to a Japanese size 3 port)

The next day KB was passing Midway.

My understanding was it is the same basic thing, curbing unrestricted warfare against merchant shipping.

lol, In my AI game I still haven't made a dent in KB.... 2 S boats put 2 torps into a baby CV, but its been about 30 days and I haven't received a report of her going down.

KB now (July '42) is pounding Wake, and trying to land troops. I want to engage them with my carriers, but the Lex and Hornet are at Pearl refitting, Enterprise and Yorktown (after an extended cruise in the Coral Sea) are at Noumea refitting, and Sara is in drydock at San Fran after 3 torpedo hits nearly sank her. She should return to service along with my PH BBs.

From Marc Schwanebeck's posting of the v1.20 patch:

"New Features:

1) The player may now select “Allied Sub Doctrine”, which causes Allied submarines to avoid an aggressive posture until the middle of 1943. The result is the submarines will get off fewer shots at longer range and receive fewer depth charge attacks. "
