I can't find my zip drive that had the latest version of the game... Does anyone know where I can get a copy? I understand the website that used to house the game is down.

Thanks in Advance!!

Looks like **The Underdogs** still has it.

I hope posting that is OK; I know the Matrix folks get a little testy on the subject of abandonware (ACW:StA is still freeware, to my knowledge).

At the risk of incurring Matrix wrath...is there an alternate download site for Sumter to Appomattox? For some reason The-Underdogs' version didn't work for me.

Thanks.

David,

Thanks so much - this is just another example of what sets Matrix apart from other companies - the uncessing desire to please your customers.

This level of good intentions goes all the way in my book to make me a loyal customer - good experiences and bad - so that no matter how much I like or don't like a title - I will still come back and support Matrix.

Again, thanks!

Hi Guys

I just got off the phone with Frank. He said we could post it but that he does not have a copy of it. He said he know someone who might so as soon as I can get a version I will set it up.

That's great news David.

Now, all you need to do is call up ole Dave Landrey and get him back on the ship and redo "War of the Lance" for the XP. ;)

Yeah, I'm a die-hard fanboy of that game. I still play it on my system, but, there's no sound and I can't figure out how to use this darn C=64 Emulator I downloaded. I love the way they tell you all the specs and gadgets, but, don't tell you how to use them "step by step". In my younger days I would sit and figure it out, but, I'm too old to mess with that anymore, too many good games to miss playing trying to figure out how to setup a dos application or emulate something.

Civil War Generals 2 was great fun - and resolutely refuses to run under Windows XP.

StA is actually a very good strategic level game (I was playing for weeks when it was first released commercially) .... well worth a download site and forum in the same way as SPWaW.

Thanks very much for all your replies. It would be great if a download was made available. I have played and enjoyed Civil War Generals 2, that is why I was hoping to try StA. I am not at all familiar with the Civil War and think a strategic level game will provide me with a little insight.

Thanks again.

David -

FYI

On the wargamer forum there is a link to a website where you can download the windows version. The website states that Frank Hunter has given them permission to post the game.

See this wargamer forum thread:

http://www.wargamer.com/forums/tm.asp?m=106774

If Matrix can post this on their FTP site that would be great and maybe even have a little dedicated website like you guys do for Pacific War, and War in Russia.

That's fantastic, David. I was a fan of this, too, so I'm glad you picked up the ball.

Hi Guys

The game is now available on the Matrix Games Public FTP server. If someone could throw up a link for me that would be great. I will work on a forum conference next. Just for the record we have signed up with Frank and I can tell you now that his next game with us will be Sumpter to Appomatox II.

David

Question, is STA the same as ACW?

I'm not sure which version or what I have. I got something off of underdogs that is a campaign game of the American Civil War at an operational scale. Lots of popup windows with training, movements, diplomatic actions, etc. etc. Are these the same game?

Same game. The full title was/is "American Civil War: From Sumter to Appomattox"

I seem to recall it shipped with a decent multimedia CD on the Civil War, too, but obviously that doesn't come with the download!

Those who got the game via the Underdogs should replace it with the one Matrix have put up . It seems to be a more recent version that includes an editor, although quite what you can edit I'm not sure as yet.

Civil War Generals 2 was great fun - and resolutely refuses to run under Windows XP.

I had a different problem. It always crashed if I scrolled to the bottom of the screen in win95, and 98, but works fine on XP. Strange indeed as games tend to become more unstable the newer the OS. My theory is MS introduced a new bug in XP by accident that happened to make the game more stable as a side effect :P

What do you mean it won't run under XP? I never had a problem with the ORIGINAL Civil War Generals under 98, and CWG2 has run smoothly no matter what OS I have used (98, ME, XP home, and currently XP pro). It did freeze on me once, but after a 5 hour stint doing the entire battle of Gettysburg (this was on Sunday).

What version are you running? 1.04 works fine for me on XP.

Just what I said, although it seems that isn't a universal problem. For me, insta-crash.

I'll dig out the CD and try again, though. If I know it isn't a general problem, maybe I can pin it down.
