An earlier version of SPWAW (7.0?) had a Dieppe raid battle that seems to be missing from later versions . . . is it still accessible somewhere? Will it work with v8.3?

Hi Flyboy.

I searched all the 8.3 and 7.1 scenario files (which you may have already done) and didn't come up with anything. If there was a scenario on Dieppe included with the core package, it was before 7.1.

I'm surprised there aren't more scenarios on Dieppe considering it was a significant battle. M4Jess wrote a commando minicampaign, but I don't think any of the battles included focused on Dieppe.

The only scenario I've been able to find in searching the scenarios and campaigns that I've downloaded is called "For Valor" written by Kord. I've uploaded a copy of the file and had to rename it to a .jpg format from .zip. You can download it and rename it and let me know if it works.

I did one long ago for the old SPWW2 in conjunction with Major Destruction (Stuart Millis). I had the feeling also that something had been done in SPWAW with Dieppe. I'm going to check my archives to see if I find anything.

Okay, I found the Dieppe map that I did in SPWAW and that does jog my memory. Yes, I did do a scenario on Dieppe. Now to see if I can find it and check it to see if it is updated for 8.3.

I'll let you know...>WB

I cannot find it. I did find the text file for the scenario. Perhaps I'll redo it or some of the other enterprising designers out there might take it on. The map was done quite historically, thanks to the insight of Stuart Millis (himself a Canadian) and his positive criticism of the work.

___DIEPPE-A HARD LESSON!*
*
Canadian Advance vs German Delay*
_French Coast, August 19, 1942*
*
Design: Wild Bill Wilder*
*
After two years of impatient waiting, the Canadians based in England get
their chance to go to war.*
*
Allied leaders opt for a recon in force on the French Coast. A
combined attack force formed primarily from Canadian troops will assault
the area around the town of Dieppe on the northern French coast.*
*
The plan was to take the town and hold it for some six hours. After
this the troops would re-embark into the landing craft. Four regiments
of infantry would be supported by a battalion of the new Churchill
tanks.*
*
It was hoped that such a move would draw German forces from the Eastern
Front to bolster defenses on the coast. It would also be a test of
enemy defenses for a future Allied assault on the mainland.*
*
Tragically, the outcome was far different from what was anticipated.
Lessons were learned, but at the cost of the blood one thousand valiant
Canadian soldiers.*
*
Dieppe had become a disaster. Lessons would be
learned, however, that would prove invaluable in the D-Day invasion
nearly two years later.*

I have looked through everything I have. Unless the name of the scenario is not obvious, I can't find Wild Bill's Dieppe scenario.

I did find one by Drake and would be happy to email it to anyone who wants it.

I took a quick look at the units. The Canadian units are ok. The churchill tanks have an extra CMG which you will want to switch off and the 6in naval guns are firing bayonets. Not a big problem as the naval support is over represented in this scenario IMHO.

I didn't look at the German units.

Hey Riun.

Do you still have the compressed copy of the 5.1? I seem to have misplaced mine. I wouldn't mind having it around for reference issues such as this one.

found it too (Drake version) but there was no text file included. Odd. I looked through the scen in V8.3 and found the same problems Major D reported. No big deal. I fixed the stuff and you can download it below.

It´s renamed *.zip file (now Dieppe 42 (Drake) Scen 149.gif). After download rename it to Dieppe 42 (Drake) Scen 149.zip and unpack it into your scen folder. If you don´t want to overwrite any scen149 V8.3 scenario, then unzip into a temp folder and rename the files accordingly.

That sounds like the one. The designer had gone so far as to rename all the Canadian units by their historical unit designations. It was a very tough scenario (as befitting the actual outcome of the raid), and a great piece of work . . . I'm glad it hasn't been lost to the ages . . .

No problem. I know how friends can be when you loan stuff to them.

Thanks for taking the time to look and getting back to me, Riun.

There's a Dieppe Raid by Drake in 7.1 near the end of the canned scenarios, also it's available in it's 7.1 format in the H2Hfr version (hell its based on the 7.1, so why shouldn't it be there).
