Looking over my many boxes of old games..

Colonial Conquest
Geopolitique 1990 (update it for 2000's)
Imperium Galactium
Stellar Crusade
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Gazallonaire

And then also

Silent Service (First one) Silent Service II just wasn't seemingly as fun

And USAAF!!

BTR of Course was put out but it was and is too much compared to the USAAF
which was more fun to play.

Yup, USAAF, best wargame ever, though it did have some bugs on my Apple IIE, though I found out how to work around them to a very satisfactory level.

The game I figure would be great (IF you update it and give it more options) is "Wargame construction kit. (forget the actual name, its the game where you can create any battle out of the data base.)

A wargame that has the ability to create battles like age of rifles but can be set in any time period (or even create matches between different time periods)

Want a napoleonic battle ? Just fire up the editor and and the data base has all the nationalities and TO&E of the period and edit them into a map created in your map maker and fight any battle of the napoleonic period.

Want WWII ? same thing, Want battle between roma and carthage ? Ditto...

Want a future battle (space marine vs aliens ?,) maybe later in a update pack add on.

Or want to see rome get invaded by the red army with T34s ? that could be done also.

Of course the data base and editor would be the heart of the game. But game mechanics would have to be as good also to be up to the challenge of making the battles worth fighting.

Basically its aneditor that allows you to recreat any battle you want and fight it in a realistic manner.

Was called Wargame Construction Set I

II was WWII and beyond battles while III was AGE OF RIFLES - Which was MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ( or one of them!! )...

You can get the first I think at the Underdogs website or get it for the Apple or C64 and play it on an emulator...

I WISH they would redo Age of Rifles - I just think everything is a step back covering that era... Tillres games are good - but even with the faster computers - the play is so much slower than AoR... and heck, even the graphics were better...

I guess I'll go and dig it out now and try and get it to work on my laptop again... sigh...

This thread got me thinking about the Old Rainbird software... Universal Military Simulator (UMS) and it's successors (available at Underdogs). It was buggy as hell, crashed as often as it completed a turn, but it was so unique.

UMS

It's hard to describe, you have to look at it to comprehend the nature of its wireframe 3-D terrain environment with units identified by what looked like labels on pins stuck into the map. It had the feel of an early 20th century "war room" with people pushing stands with unit info around a big map.

I really think something could be made of that approach with today's technology available. Something that would let you literally zoom in to view terrain from your unit's perspective on the map.

i'v been absolutley DYING to hear if matrix is going to redo the simcan modern naval games - Fifth Eskadra, Seventh Fleet, and Northern Fleet, and mabe put them all into 1 game. when i was a kid me and my friends would spend hundreds of hours stay up all night trying to take out the other's fleet! those games were an ansolute blast to play, even with no graphics!

ROFL, I can't believe I just read this:

Ravinhood: " 1) Roadwar 2000 (a great post holocaust rpg/tactical wargame (car wars style)) "

The ironic thing was I was just on the phone with David Heath yesterday saying how I was nostalgic about Rodwar Europa (which was Roadwar 2000's sequel) so I went back to play it and realized...

Its horrible! I can't believe I used to play that game so much! Maybe im spoiled by "modern" games now but I couldn't take it :(. It ruined my fond memory of Roadwar Europa/2000.

Thats the problem with nostalgia. Im sure Elite and the original Gunship would bore me stupid today.

However thats also a good reason to update old games. As it was all about the gameplay and imagination. Those games will still have the gameplay they just need updating.

Hollywood did the sequel thing then the games industry followed. Hollywood is now remaking alot of their back catalog (They have run out of ideas now its so damn pathetic. Fancy remaking The Ladykillers and Alfie!!). However with PC games it would be different they would be improved not turned into a joke..............hopefully

Enigma Tide Rising (new naval game...was to have Multi-player option but never happend)
Air Superority (board game) would love to see a flight sim with a ton of fighters in it or allowed to be ported into it.

Not trying to cramp Matrix style But have you tried any of the following Sonalyst titles (the people that made 688 Attack Sub)

SSN 21 Seawolf (old game)
Jane's 688i (1996ish game)
Sub Command (2001 update of previous game, can con 688i, Seawolf, or Akula I and II)
SCS Dangerous Waters (new game coming either next month or march, can con all platforms as above, plus Kilo, Oliver Hazard Perry, and can fly P-3C Orion and MH-60.)

Age of Rifles would be cool too, but I'd settle for a Windows XP compatible version of the old one..

I'll amend that a little. How about a new ACW game, but very much in the style of both (being fairly similar in the way they played) AoR and Civil War Generals 2?

Both of those titles consistently crop up on these boards as being great favourites, so such a game would most likely sell very well. Not to mention that Matrix don't currently publish any Civil War titles at all.

I do remember that game except my version was for my Atari 800 computer. It ran on a 5 1/4" floppy disk. I still have the computer, monitor, floppy drive and the game disk packed away somewhere. While it's probably been 14 yrs or so since I last played it, I could probably hook it up and run if I wanted to.

I've found that some of my 5-1/4 floppies have deteriorated over time. Some no longer work, magnetic media doesn't last forever like digital, although with digital you have to be very careful with your cd's/dvd's even they have some sensitive areas and you can lose all the information in a drop or a crack or a fit of anger when you toss the cd across the room because it won't install and it's brand new. heh

Never, throw out a GOOD old machine, you never know when you will need it. Just keep them free of dust balls.

I'm running a 386/17, 486/33, a 586/200 ODP, I also have motherboard with a AMD K6-2/550 with hard drive that can be switched around with this machine.

SSN 21 Seawolf & SSN 688I, got them play them.

A remake of Carrier Strike with a link to WitP to play out some of the battles and move the results back into the game. But that is a serious wet dream, would never happen.

There was an old spectrum game called either sink or hunt the bismark, or just bismark that was outstanding at the time. At least thats how I remember it

I know it would be more minutia, which would turn some people off, but wouldn't WITP be more interesting if you could control the repair crews and you did in STB (with the option to have them repaired on auto. as now of course)? That repair crew portion of the game was as interesting as anything, because sometimes you actually let water in for example in order to level the ship out. I must admit that may sound awfully dull, but that portion of the game was really interesting.

I think the game was called "Computer Bismark".

I think there was an Avalon Hills computer game , Title escapes me but you basically moved Bismark around out to raid convoys, caught them sunk them while computer came after you with Hood, etc...

No real graphics but I recall in those days it was fun, like also Nukwar was..

Ohhh Man those too yes, As I recall it some were part board part computer heh...

You spread out a map and used cardboard counters to make moves and the computer gave results...

I still have them stored away somewhere..

Now if were redone with computer maps , all computer... yum

Hi, I really enjoyed playing CWGII and was looking forward to CWGIII. It was on one of the site tracking CWGIII progress that I found a link to Matrix Games. At the time Matrix was planning a Napoleonic game so I came over to check it out.
Both the Matrix game and CWGIII were cancelled. But I began playing SPWaW and the Matrix version of Pacwar.
I had become some what fed up with playing CWGII online because other players felt it was perfectly ok to use limbered arty and their General units to block retreats of enemy units. ("Hey it's allowed so it must be ok")
After I began playing SPWaW online with Tankhead I stopped playing everything else except PacWar PBEM.
When 2by3/Matrix began posting delvelopment of UV I was busy doing the first Mega Campaign for SPWaW (Desert Fox) By the time I checked out progress they had already formed the beta team for UV. I began following it. (Actually I responded to a question from 2by3 concerning fuel use in the game)
Been hooked ever since. When I got my copy of UV I played it for almost 48 hours without sleep against the AI.
Over time I have drifted away from SPWaW and PacWar and played UV and now WITP most of the time. (But I still helped with Watchtower and Screaming Eagles Mega Campaigns)
I really can't stand to even look at PacWar anymore. SPWaW I would play if I had a good online partner and more then 24 hours in a day.

I would be very excited if anyone began CWGIII project again. (I'd make sure you could not use Limbered Arty and Generals to block enemy retreats.

Gary Grigsby's Warship/Battlecruiser.

A modern turn based tactical warship combat game for WWI and II would be just lovely.

I have the two games (via an Apple IIe emulator) but while I was able to monkey with them to improve certain flukes, only a remake can truely fix all of the bugs in an otherwise golden apple of a wargame(s) (for one i cant fix the armor penetration formulas)

Hi, CWGIII was to be the campaign game where the players controled production and decided where to move. CWGII Campaign had you fighting the historical battles. The results were supposed to carry over from one battle to the next but I never saw where it did anything. COnfederate units I wiped out in one battle were there for the next.

There are a few old board games I would love to see made into video games. Across 5 Aprils was a good one, We the People, 1775, and the Siege of Jerusalem. X-Com absolutely has my vote be touched up so it could play on Windows XP. I hope that game would not be remade as the other titles in the series were just horrible especially the last one. Also, I am surprised no body has mentioned this one Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. That was by far the funnest I ever had playing a flight sim. Yes the flight model sucked and the damage was not realistic, but that campaign simulator was unbeatable. Those 3 dynamic campaigns it had made me play them over and over again. I really wish Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe could be touched up so it could play on XP. SWOTL gets best all time flight sim in my book

thanks,
ShermanM4

I just thought of some more titles.

Flight of the Intruder: Played the hell out of that one ..back before Super VGA was out.
Archon :Old C-64 FPS/Chess game.
Master of Monsters: Old Sega hard to explain.
StarShip combat Sim: Old FASA game board game ...but since its Star Trek related the lisc would be excessively costly (thanks Viacom!)
Into the Fire: Sierra's Babylon 5 game which got pulled after 70% completion. Which was about insane since B5 was still playing and had decent ratings at the time.

Age of Rifles sounds like a good one.I've only played the demo, but now that DOS is dead i can't even play that.

I think i also remember the Wargame Construction Kit.That came out a long, very long, time ago.Being a little kid holding the box in my trembeling hands by what it described, wishing i had a real computer to so i could play it...instead of a commodore 64....though Word Zapper wasn't bad

How would you update it?I loved that game, but things being what they are,you would have to seriously upgrade the graphics.Though i would still play it if i could kick my old Sega back to life. The best part was Bayonet attacks and ambushes, from cav and guerillas, though the actual combat only played one role in the game.It was very deep for its time all things considered.

Yea, I`d love to see American Civil War on the same scale as WITP..Maybe the South would be winable if the player could control production, and mass armies insead of trying to garrision every little community under the sun..Could be totally awesome--if done correctly..
