This AAR will have to take a brief hiatus. There's been a death in the family, and I'll be out of town for the funeral for a few days. Precisely how much havoc this will wreak with my schoolwork remains to be seen, but I'llI probably won't have any time to post more turns for a week or two. Sorry.

OK, back in business. Funeral went well as such things go and school work's back on track. I just started dating someone so that's been hurting my free time (poor me), but I think I'm back in position to get to work.

For reasons that are unclear to me, I watched January 1st and 2nd, took notes, then deleted the turns. I'll give brief recaps, then post details for 1/3

Koepang
BB Kongo succumbed to injuries sustained earlier. CVE Hosho is battling flooding damage at Kendari (90+ SYS, 60-70 FLT). Once she's in reasonable shape, she'll run north. Amboina was captured, with all its defenders.

Landings at Pinrang (west coast of Sulawesi). It's undefended.

Porpoise was spotted and attacked twice near Amboina without success.
Sealion put 1 torp in AP Chinko Maru (empty) E of Kendari. She's at 50SYS/44FLT.
Sculpin took a shot at Ashigara (heading to Koepang) SW of Kendari, but missed.

A cruiser force will hit Koepang tomorrow, followed by Yamashiro and Fuso the next night. Ground troops are on the way.

TK Rikko Maru and Tatsujin Maru were both sunk by subs.

China
Artillery duels at Yenen. Another deliberate attack went in today.
Japanese Deliberate Attack at Yenen
Attacking force 228864 troops, 2715 guns, 171 vehicles

Defending force 58115 troops, 373 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Japanese ground losses:
4748 casualties reported
Guns lost 132
Vehicles lost 6

Allied ground losses:
1464 casualties reported
Guns lost 62

Bloody, but disruption in the besieging army is very low (in the 30-40s). Final attack should take place in a couple days.

Other stuff
On the progress of operations, the Admiral has the following to say:
"Looks like PI will be done by mid Jan. Give a month to move troops to Malaya and Singapore will be taken by the end of Feb. SRA should be done by end of Mar (if not sooner) So no problem there. Will be able to be in major operation South Pacific by 1 May.
Major battle for Timor and bomberdmants from Darwin causing more trouble then forseen but you have to win battles ehrre the enemy decides he will fight.
Working on way to use to advantage. Once I get solid intell on strength of enemy LCU at Darwin I'll develop means to take it. Don't intend on trying to to hold it just buy time to strengthen air defense against future allied operations. "

I-122 put 3 torpedoes into AK Empire Carey near Ceylon. Down she goes. (The alert reader will recall that the very same sub hit the very same ship with one torpedo in the same area Christmas day. It seems probably that she docked in Trimcomalee for a while, then was headed to Karachi or back into service... Oops)

Makin and Apamama captured, wrapping up the operation. Airfield will be built on Tarawa with an eye towards an advance to Baker/Canton. For now, transports and CVs will retire.

Koepang
Recon reports 167 a/c and 24,600 men at Koepang. BBs move in to bombard tonight, along with two cruiser groups. 3 SNLFs are about to land, and the 56th Bde. is waiting on transports at Kendari. See screenshot, infra. 1 SNLF each are moving to bases on East Timor.

Many small raids against the ships between Kendari and Koepang.
I won't bother to list them all, most were against Yamashiro and Fuso. In total, 17 Hudsons, 15 Martins, and 3 B-17Es attacked targets. About 55 fighter sorties were flown in the escort role. 3 Martins were lost to flak, 1 Hudson and 1 Buffalo to Ops. 1 hit on Fuso, no damage.

Hosho has turned the corner on FLT damage, barring any future port attacks, at least. 91/72 right now, losing about 2-3/day.

I-153 torpedoed and sank DD Parrott north of Australia (magazine explosion), but was hit by 1 DC in return. Damage at 26/37, returning to Kendari.

Sculpin was attacked without success by an ASW TF SW of Kendari. Pickerel was spotted near Menado, and Pike missed a shot at AP Rakuyo Maru near Amboina (moving support troops in).

Koepang
The BBs returned to Kendari instead of hitting Koepang. Must not have looked at orders carefully enough. The two CA groups did attack. The first engaged an Allied TF built around PoW and a ton of CLs. The second got through and bombarded.

PoW was shockingly ineffective. A few 5.25" shells on Maya (maybe a big caliber one after i quit watching, judging from damage reports), and nothing else. Torpedoes played a big role in the battle, allowing the Japanese DDs to do some damage to all those CLs. All the damaged ships should make Kendari tomorrow, although I don't think Mogami will leave them there long due to the danger of port attacks.

The invasion targetting Koepang has been shifted to Dili. Once E. Timor is taken, troops will move overland to Koepang.

Hi, I am going to interrupt the AAR for a moment to interject some thoughts.
Brady pulled out of the SRA almost entirely. But he decided to make a stand on Timor.
As you will see I required quite a few turns before I realized this.
The forces alloted to securing Timor were quite modest in the begining but the place drew in incresing forces from both sides till it assumed a status quite out of proportion to it's value. In the end I sought to take Timor only because Brady sought to hold it.
But I needed quite a bit of convicing before I realized the extent of the effort Brady was willing to place there.
I was quite frustrated for many turns. And the struggle to preserve my damaged CVE kept me occupied as well. I should have pulled them out as soon as the fires were out but I had no size 3 port to move them to.
Brady is as stubborn as a mule. (But then so am I)

Some more Hudsons put a bomb in Tsunushima Maru. FLT at 97, she's doomed, but fortunately no troops on board.

32 Betties sortie and put 3 torps in DD Edsall which explodes from magazine damage.

Despite what the CR said, NO A2A or Flak losses. The Allies at Lautem bombarded the SNLF landed there. Looks like the 23rd Indian Div., or portions thereof, Lark Force and Gull Force.

Phillippines
A bunch of MSWs work on clearing the mines in Bataan and Manila. About 200k points worth of APs are converging on Manila to load all those troops for transport to Malaya.

This CR seemed a little weird. A lot of the results were incorrect. Hope it's not a version problem or something (but why would the earlier ones work?)

Through no fault of my own, I don't have the orders phase from 1/11, so I'll post both turns together.

Koepang
Catalinas from Koepang have been getting into the night attacks, with an unfortunate degree of success. Hits on Kitakami (moderate damaged, in Kendari 66/29/0, should survive); and AP Yoshinogawa Maru (hit by a sub later, sinks).

Lautem
Landings continue throughout this period. As mentioned above, the forces landed here were not nearly equal to the task. On 1/11, the Allies launched a deliberate attack, and pushed the forces there towards Dili. More troops are landing. There are about 8k Allies, currently about 1k Japanese landed.

Allied Villainy
1/11
CVE Hosho finally succumbs to damage in Kendari.
Some Vildebeests put a torpedo in AP Daitei Maru near Dili (sinks).

1/12
A Beaufort puts a torpedo into AP Tatuha Maru (near Dili). Currently at 86/60/7, not looking great.
I-155 attacks DD Van Ghent just north of Australia, but misses the shot. Destroyed by escorts.
Sculpin finishes off the wounded AP Yoshinogawa Maru.

Despite these villainous acts, air activity from Koepang seems to be dropping off. 20 sorties/day maybe?

Japanese Retribution
1/11
About 60 Betties and Nells fly, and ravage a handful of destroyers at Lautem. Their work is finished by a SC TF in the area. DDs Paul Jones, John D. Edwards, Edsall, Whipple, and Alden all go down.

The 55th Bde. is sitting in Kendari. There are 12k load points of small APs, so I have to assume that those troops will be loaded and moved to Lautem soon. I'm also surprised that the 5 BBs in Kendari aren't doing any bombardment work. Curious. The Admiral is considering a limited invasion of the Darwin area, just to scare the Allies:
"Have begun study of operation against Northern Austraila.
Tenative plan is to land 3 Bde with 1 Division held in reserve at Kendari. Landing would be at Broome (but may be shifted east to Derby or Wyndham.
Forces would then march toward Darwin taking ports as they go. Only SNLF and construction unit would remain in bases to be evacuated by FT when enemy forces approach.
Resupply would take place for advance as each port taken.
All the airfields are at least size 3 so they could be used to support advance and resupply on march via air.

Risk is force would be caught on the road but I don't think the enemy can move enough force fast enough. Would have to insure the last port taken was held while advancing on next port so as to maintain egress."

Malaya
Heavy Nell raids on both days against Singapore port.
Singapore Port AttacksJapanese aircraft
G3M Nell x 53

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 15 damaged

Allied ground losses:
280 casualties reported
Guns lost 11

Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 3

Aircraft Attacking:
All G3M Nell bombing at 11000 feet

#2
Japanese aircraft
G3M Nell x 39

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 3 damaged

Allied ground losses:
123 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Port hits 1
Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
All G3M Nell bombing at 11000 feet

Phillippines
Work continues on clearing the mines from Manila and Bataan. AP Hayo Maru hit several and is in Manila with 51/70 damage. Most of the units used to capture Bataan are at Manila now, soon to be shipped to Malaya.

The two base forces holed up at Tugueragao were finally captured today. About 800 prisoners, and Luzon is now entirely Japanese.

Gilberts
The last few transports are pulling out of the area now. The KB is replenishing at Kwajalein and is headed to Truk next.

China
Wuchow Raid (1/12)
Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 20
Ki-51 Sonia x 50
Ki-15 Babs x 1
Ki-36 Ida x 1

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
55 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
All bombing at 2000 feet

Most of the units that captured Yenen are back in Chengting. The Nanning relief force continue to limp towards its destination. 75-100 miles away.

Now that Bataan is secured, the hammer will fall on the other resistance in the SRA. The operation has been christened Ichigatsukaze (translation anyone? altavista didn't have anything to offer).

Timor
The 56th Bde. (mistakenly called 55th a few times above, I think) will move from Kendari to Lautem.

35th and 65th Bdes. are loading in Manila to take Koepang.

4th Div. will move from Manila to Kendari, where it will act as an operational reserve.

Borneo
16th, 48th, and 2nd Divs. will all split into A, B, and C brigades.

16th Div. will take Tarakan, Balikpapan, and Samidare. (S Borneo)

48th Div. will take Kuching, Pontianak, and Singkawang. (NW Borneo)

2nd Div/A and /B will take Banjarmasin and Sampit (W Borneo). 2nd Div/C Bde. will be the Borneo reserve.

Malaya
56th Div. will clean up the last Allied outpost in the PI, then move to Malaya.

5th, 18th, and 38th Divs. will also move to Johore Bharu.

Java and Sumatra (future)
Once these areas are subdued, Balikpapan (Java South), Kuching (Java North), and Singapore (Sumatra), will be staging points for the assault on the remainder of the SRA.

N. Australia (future)
The 3 Bdes. scheduled to conquer Timor will prepare to assault Derby next.

Naval/Air Support
The BBs from Kendari will hit Darwin by night. Betties and Nells from Amboina will suppress the airfield for the remainder of the operation.

Other bombardment TFs will strike Koepang. Bombers from Kendari will keep that base suppressed.

Lautem will also be bombarded.

Get ready for some fun...

From the horse's mouth. January Wind. Uncreative, but appropriate.

Koepang
Allied Raid on Dili
Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 12
B-17E Fortress x 9

No Allied losses

Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 3

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 7000 feet

Macassar falls. There's been a bit of a drama here that I haven't been reporting. A landing was initiated, but it was too small. The Allied bombarded, then deliberate attacked it. (then put in a disastrous shock attack.) It was reinforced over the last 2 turns, and the base was captured with 1500 prisoners today.

Phillippines
Raid on Cebu (2 combined)
Japanese aircraft
Ki-48 Lily x 56

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-48 Lily: 1 damaged

Allied ground losses:
28 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
All x Ki-48 Lily bombing at 15000 feet

Raid on Iloilo
Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 29

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-30 Ann: 4 damaged

Allied ground losses:
22 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
All Ki-30 Ann bombing at 2000 feet

Stranded Allied troops won't be around long. Two transport groups headed out of Manila today. Operation Ichigatsukaze calls for all invasions to land simultaneously, so early TFs will stand off near targets.

Hi, I never claimed to be all that creative. Just so you know currently I am conducting Operation Gogatsukaze (Operation May Wind)
