It seems that the allies are paying a damned high price for this operation.....i can't wait to see how the KB will deal with all these damaged allied carriers
BTW, how's the VP situation?

I'm satisfied with how many Allied cruisers and carriers that have been damaged, that's for sure Hoepner
The KB is no more than a match for the Allied fleet, but it will still be difficult to retain a striking capability after the battle.
Think it's 24400 vs 7000 points or so, but 2 of the UK bb's I've dispatched are still not on the list.

Bob - that's the short version, right!-) I'm getting the CV Hiyo in a month or so - but that won't really help me. It's a 55 ac carrier... Will also
receive a few cvl's and cve's during the autum. Again nothing much to look forward to. I've accelerated the construction of the Taiho, that's a fine ship.
Should arrive in a good year or so, the only solid carrier to arrive. Then we'll have to wait until 44 for the Katsuragi et al. (Modified Hiryus)

Situation Report

India

5 divisions have entered Ahrmadabad - bombardment attack until the engineer regiments can catch up.
We try to hit the fields at Dehli again tomorrow, if I can reduce the Allied heavy bomber strength, the mediums won't be able to hit Bombay.
A few small Allied units are getting closer to Panaji - the place that ate 2 of my units. I've asked Al to keep the base off limits, but not sure what to do about an
advance. The 170000 units of fuel at Bombay has been teleported to Panaji I just hate some of the quirks in this game. Going to try to airlift a garrison
to keep the wolfs at bay and load the fuel on transports and evacuate the haunted place.

Java

The cruiser division stopped 1 hex short of Waingapu - going to hit it tomorrow. Hope I catch something there. I'll try to recapture it asap! A few fast transports from
Kendari perhaps using the bde there.

The 2nd Car Div is heading west into the Indian Ocean - it's waiting for the rest of the KB. Should catch up in 2 days. Recon tells me that the enemy force is moving South by West in the middle of the Indian Ocean between Java and the maps edge. Got a sub with recon ac that will try to shadow them. Is Wobbly abandoning Java to its faith? The battleships squadron with the Mutsu and Yamato has been ordered to take up position south west of Java - then it will hit the enemy fields at Madion. That's going to hurt...Wobbly got hundreds of ac there.

A few night bombing raids have been ordered against both airfields and the port at Tjilitjap - the only port that can take damaged Allied ships. I've stood the damaged Daitais down - on average only 30% of the ac are ready to fly and morale is low. Got a fresh force to deploy, but I'll keep it in reserve.
Nothing more to achieve for now.

Once again, excellent AAR.. Hows the pilot pool? And i know its early, but have you hatched a plan to kick him out, should you secure the sea lanes around Java?

Thx Hornblower!! Nice to hear that people appreciate the time that goes into this AAR
The pilot pools are non existent - and have been so for quite some time. I never had a IJN pilot pool to begin with either, did I...

We don't want a long war, do we

I'm going to be patient - I need the Army in India to boot 4-5 Allied divisions from India. So first we destroy the enemy fleet, then we bombard and starve Java for a few months. By october or so, India should have been captured and I will send a powerful army to Java.

The backup plan: release more units from China and build up a reserve army and try to split Java in two and destroy the Allied armies piecemeal by using bombardment runs. This could take time, but it shouldn't be an issue if I can destroy the Allied carriers.

I already got ca 60000 crack assault troops heading for Borneo and Singapore.

I think PZB you should move as quick as you can, finish India ASAP
Wobbly is a leech, once he gets a base I could never get him out.....
he will pour whatever it takes into the place, and that means planes, planes and more planes
Your pilots are going to slide down very rapidly from today on, and soon you will be struggling to get some hits without big losses.....
You are on the cusp of victory now, any relaxation and he will get away with this!!!

Herb: rest assured that I will do all that I can to squash the invaders. I told Al that he's like a mouse that has snuck in while the cat was away...
It's impossible to say how quickly I can subdue India, but I KNOW that it's darned difficult to reduce major strongholds. (cities with large forts and lots of troops)

If he wants to move ac into Java without having adequate supplies, let him. They won't fly and I've bombarded Java before
Lets look at one of my favorite slappings:

That can be arranged Bob, but you have to wait until I get the next turn from Al.... Nothing in my inbox this
morning, so I have to spend all my energy and effort on writing a paper on research method

Here Bob: A screenie of the IJN cv reinforcement schedule!
As you can see, the Hiyo is due within a month, and I'm also getting a cve, cvl and the Musashi within 6 months.

The Taiho, Unryu, Amagi and Katsuragi are all being produced at an accelerated pace whule the Shinano has been halted.
If I 'm lucky - the Taiho will arrive within a year.

Situation Report

India

I don't like the situation in the air in India - afraid Al will hammer Bombay again. I have to hit him first - unfortunately todays strike was a flop.
Ahmadabad is up tomorrow, afrad the Spits will chop my Zeros and bombers. Have to try, just need to give my army a rest from the incessent air strikes. The Allied bombers fly every day - weather has been on their side lately.

Look at the situation map: We got 6 full divisions and shortly 5 eng regiments will arrive. This force opposes 2 regiments, 2 Indian divs and 1 Oz div, 1 tank reg, 6 eng and construction regs, 6 arty units and 5 base7 ans aviation units. If we can reduce the forts - we should have the upper hand.

Going to advance on Dehli soon with 5 full divs, several eng and tank regs +++ Another division has been divided into 3 regiments and will protect the flank and
attempt to cut of Dehli. In all we got 12 divisions ready for offensive operations. In addition there is another div and 4 bde's and regs around Dacca and Asansol.
A total of 15 divs + numerous support units.

The battlefleet did its job - no enemy CAP in Karachi and most of the ships left the port. Hopefully my Betties can hit them. I'll play cat and mouse for a few days and try to destroy the remainder of the RN in India.

Java

A very interesting situation - I got a few screenshots that I wish to upload. Will do that in a few following posts.
I've spotted the enemy cv's. They're racing towards Oz, and I'm in a position to intercept in 2 days or so.

More on this in the next posts....

A follow up post on the dramatic events in and around Java:

Incredible - we spotted the enemy cv's far into the Indian Ocean. If Al's heading for Perth, he'll be safe. If he's running for northern Oz - he's toast!
We'll move the entire KB on an intercept course and perform a spring towards the assumed enemy position tomorrow. I don't the the damaged enemy cv's are here, 2 were reportedly spotted at Tjilitjap.

The 1st Cruiser Division under Rear Admiral Tanaka has been ordered to Kendari to pick up the 56 Brigade and bring it to Waingapu. A Tokyo shuttle that combines bombardments and troop/supply runs will assure that the island once again comes under Imperial rule. Then the Allied fighters can't get from Oz to Java.
A transport tf from Tarakan has loaded an SNLF and NLF unit and will reinforce the landings in a week or so.

The Bombardment group under Admiral Yamada (The Yamato, Mutsu, 3 ca, 3 cl and 7 dd's) has moved almost to Bali whtout being spotted.
Since weather is bad, I've ordered a high speed spring to Madion in order to bombard the overcrowded Allied air bases there. If successfull - it should be possible
to deliver devastating blows to the other bases and tf's there without too much opposition.

It's a risk: Allied torpedo bombers could get a shot at the Yamato, but I feel confident that luck will once again favor the bold!
Tora Tora Tora!

Wow! This game is nothing if not lively. :)

So how many CVs are in your KB? Do you worry about exceeding the limit for coordinated attacks?

Biggest problem will be to find the enemy...I've divided the KB into three Car Divs

1st Kaga, Akago and 2 cvls
2nd Shokaku and Zuikaku and a cvl
3rd Junyo, a cvl and 2 cves

I think this is the right composition: In all ca 550 experience pilots and ac.
The hope is that the 3rd Car Div will take the brunt of the enemy attacks...

A large destroyer squadron was just dispatch towards Tjilitjap - it will attack enemy warships there together with a tf from Sumatra (2 ca, 2 cl and 6 dd's - one of the Kitakami torpedo cruisers is in this tf) here before I send the Yamato TF in. Then I'll release my second wave of rested naval bombers.

That's da plan anyway!

Dunno, this is the AAR that convinced me not to buy WiTP. Things like naval bombardments of Jakarta (sorry, Batavia) destroying such vast amounts of stuff. I know that people have now adapted their tactics to cope with this, but still...

E.g. the fact that the Java operation looks doomed because cruisers couldn't get to bombard Batavia's airfields at night? (which were to the the south of Batavia, quite a way inland, maybe 20 km to the coast)

Just doesn't feel right. Sorry. Not even the D-Day bombardments caused as much devastation

Situation Report

India

The situation is still tense... The situation on the ground is good, but local enemy air superiority is starting to raise fatigue and disruption levels.
Told Al that I will attempt an attack tomorrow. Guess he'll try to hit me again - so I've ordered 90 Zeros on LRCAP over Ahmadabad.

The battlefleet has been ordered to bombardt Karachi: 25 Hurricanes were observed on CAP today.

Java

Spotted some smaller ships to the north of Oz. Probably a recon force... Don't know whether the cv fleet is still sailing towards northern Oz, but will continue
on an intercept course. Car Div 3 did not follow Car Div 1 yesterday, and is 3 hexes behind. A full speed dash should make up for it.

The bombardment of Madion was perhaps overly risky, and results were meagre. Got quite a few fires aboard the big ships, but I think they'll be ok.
Lost a few secondary gun mounts - but otherwise nothing but superficial damage.

The fleet is ordered to move 5 hexes west into the Indian Ocean and join hands with the large destroyer division. Another surface group will form at Batavia.
(Ordered 30 Zeros on CAP today) I want a shot at the enemy fleets at Tjilitjap. Disbanding them in the harbor there isn't safe..as Wobbly knows.

Loading up on troops in Kendari - could almost get the entire 56th Bde onboard the 1st Cruiser Div. Heading to Waingapu.

Great job so far in the battle over Java. I am getting worried about the loss of aircraft that you are starting to experiance. Is there a chance that you could let them rest or try a night attack on the enemy airbase?

Thx for the encouraging words guys! Sometimes I spend more time on this AAR than I really have, but I must say its almost become half the game by now!

Lonewolf: Night bombing has been tuned down and is not very efficient anymore. I will have to drive the enemy fleet away, isolate Java - bombard it and then hit
it with concentrated air attacks. Unfortunately I can't do this without breaking some eggs... But you're right - I'm now hard pressed for experienced Navy pilots. If I only could convince the Army to hand over their Nate crews

Situation Report

India

Good weather continues to allow the enemy to send in droves of ac against the Army in Ahmadabad. The LRCAP mission from Bombay shoots down a lot of enemy ac - but the price I had to pay is way too high. 80 Allied and 80 Jap ac were lost today, 49 of them were Zeros. I now only got 40 Zeros left in India - and I've had to transfer 35 Oscar I's to Bombay. So no more sweeps! 3 of my Daitais had ZERO Zeros left in them today Moved em to Dacca to receive replacement rookies. Will take 6 months to train them.

Wobbly asked me whether his air raids casued much damage: I told him that yes, they increase fatigue and disruption levels - but not as much as my own deliberate attacks. The problem is that he's been hittint 4-5 of my 6 divs and this prevents them from reconstituting themselves after attacks and long marches. So I had to do something to give them the break they needed to capture Ahmadabad. Since so many enemy bombers were destroyed or damaged today, I'm hoping that this has now been achieved. The first deliberate attack was a success and reduced the forts. I still got 3 more engineer regiments on their way - and if Ahmadabad is captured Wobbly will have to move his aircraft to Dehli - and then they will be out of range of Bombay. If he base them in Karachi my battleships will pound them into dust. The capture of Ahmadabad is therefore not only importat - but decisive!

The para landing in Rawalpinind isn't important - but I captured a base behind enemy lines and destroyed 3 forts. I don't want to chase the remaining enemy units all around the continent after capturing Karachi!

In Lucknow I have now gathered 3 divisions and many tank regiments and engineers. An assault has been ordered - the remaining 3 eng regiments and 2 divisions will arrive in 1-2 days.

Around Dacca I'm gathering a strike force of ca 2 divisions - I will chase the enemy away from the railroad just across the river from Asansol and attempt to move into Burma. There are still quite a few garrison units and a full Bde left to defend against Allied remnants that may attempt to move in.

Tf 82 under R.Adm Nashimura is now 4 hexes out of Karachi and will hit the place hard tomorrow. His force uncludes 5 battleships, 1 heavy cruiser and 9 destroyers. An enemy TF containing cruisers was observed heading south - towards Bombay? The transports and msw's there have been ordered to move out and a reinforcement surface tf at Panaji is ordered to steam at flank speed to Bombay. Doubt they'll make it cause they just refuelled.

Java

The Kido Butai has been reformed! All 3 Car Divs are now steaming just north of Derby. I've spotted several smaller enemy tf's - and will most likely run into one of them soon. Not sure Al knows were my cv's are for the moment.

Here is the breakdown of my carrier divisions:

Car Div 1: R.Adm Yamaguchi - 224 ac and 54 float planes
2 cvs - Akagi and Kaga
2 cvls - Soho and Ryujo
3 cs
2 ca
6 dd

Car Div 2: V.Adm Nagumo 199 ac 32 float planes
3 cvs - Shokaku, Zuikaku and the Junyo
1 cs
1 bb - Hiei
2 ca
10 dd (one got radar)

Car Div 3 R.Adm Yamada 103 ac 2 float planes
1 cvl - Zuiho (still got 19 sys dam - curse those Do-24s!!)
3 cve - one with 16 sys dam
1 ca
3 cl
9 dd

Car Div 3 is by far the weakest - and slowest. I prefer to move slowly though - there are 3 replenishment tf's in the are - but I have no idea
about were the enemy fleet is. A quick spring is reserved for the crucial moment.

I have dispatched the Mutsu and a destrouyer - fire damage has brought sys damage up to 19. The ship is now slowing the rest of the fleet down.
The Yamato has suffered 12 sys damage from the fires caused by numerous bomb hits.

The 1st Cruiser Div will unload the bulk of a full Bde at Waingapu tomorrow. They will then bombard the place before heading back to Kendari to pick up
the rest of the Bde together with supplies. A transport tfs carrying supplies and 2 inf units from Tarakan also left port today.

Tomorrow no less than 3 tf's will slice into Tjilitjap harbour in an attempt to destroy the enemy fleets there. If this is achived, I will have isolated Java from Oz.

From Batavia TF107 under Cpt Katahara will move at full speed towards the enemy.
The force consists of:
2 ca
2 cl (including the torpedo cruiser Oi with 40 torpedoes and radar)
6 dd

TF94 under R.Adm Yamata will hit Tjilitjap from the flank.
The following ships make up this powerful group:
battleship Yamato
2 ca
3 cl
6 dd

TF98 under R.Adm Nishimura will also strike from the flank. This is the destroyer fleet with no less than 13 destroyers.
1 cl
13 dd

It is hoped that this combined effort will be enough to sink the enemy or drive him out or into port - were he will either be bombed or torpedoed.
It's vital to gain naval supremacy as quickly as possible - and if this can be achived without expending large number of naval ac - an important step towards liberating Java would have been taken. I expect to loose quite a few ships, but most of the Combined Fleet is still intact and I can afford this. Enemy LBA is a threat, but the strike against the Yamato et al yesterday must have damaged many of them. So I'm willing to take the risk. 24 Zeros have been placed on LRCAP above the TF from Batavia.

Tomorrow is going to be a very decisive day! Let's hope it'll be a good one: if we destroy the enemy in both India and Java - the war will be won!

wow, the airlosses. Hopefully some of those bailed out and you get the pilots back. How many you have left in your pool?

Pool? What pool? There's never been a pool - at least not for IJN pilots

How does it look about your aces? Were there many losses of their lot or were it mostly the rookies of the airgroups. When you say some groups had planes no planes left after todays battle, I would expect many expirienced pilots gone with them...

My top scoring ace shot down 3 enemy planes before going MIA yesterday - 15 confirmed kills.
I think the now depleted Daitais in India had roughly 65-70% experiened pilots. So if you say that ca 30 experienced Zero pilots were lost today, it shouldn't be
too far off the mark.

The efforts in India and Java will be supported by all the means available to me. It's kinda difficult to preserve pilots - especially when you try to win a battle, and ultimately a war. The Allies are still very weak compared to what t hey will become, and I'm already having problems achieving anything better than a 1-1 kill ratio in the air. It's a big problem that I don't receive more than a handful trained navy pilots each month, and it's 4-5 months until I receive another trained Zero Daitai.

Here is what I'll do: Fill up all my depleted Zero Daitais and send them to train in China. In 4 to 6 months they should be ready. I doubt the Allies will be ready to advance in the South Pacific until mid 43 or so.

Easily the most valuable asset I got is my carrier air arm: Imagine how many casualties a carrier battle will cause. So my LBA has really performed well and made it possible to preserve them. Hopefully I can now use superior force and thus preserve as many of them as possible.

I'm pretty much with you. Your only chance is in the short term victory. So better use your assets now when they still can seriously harm the enemy than preserving them for the time when the will just be smashed by enemy CAP and AAA.
There is also some light on the (short term) army horizon, as with the August comes the Tony and the Tojo - finally some use for some of those army fighter pilots

The funny thing is that I actually hope that the war drags on.... If I can conquer India and defeat the enemy in Java without achieving an auto victory I'll have a full year to prepare for the next Allied assault - and with a 25k lead in points the game might even drag on into 46!

New weapons will then be developed in order to secure final victory!

Minor disaster tonight - I was ready in da chair with pizza and coke and then I found that Wobbly had sent me the wrong turn

Situation Report

India

I'm nervous about Ahmadabad - but I got enough engineers this time, and I think the place will fall once the forts have been reduced.
Another few days with t-storms now. Lucknow will fall in a few days and the second pincer will start moving towards Dehli. I will try to surround
and eliminate the Allied troops here if Ahamdabad has been subdued by then.

Annoying that the old Stringbags yet again hit me with a torpedo..I understand why the Bismarck bought it. The pests are always hitting something.
Moving the fleet back to Bombay - more warships have arrived and I will snipe at the Allied ships in the area.

The last 2 subs around Karachi were both sunk today. *No comment* Even a blind man with a fishing pool can sink a Jap sub in this game...
The empty Daitais I moved to Dacca yesterday and allowed to receive replacements were back in Bombay today *lots of cursing* So I got 27
ac in one with 0 pilots. Oh boy it's going to take time to get it out and free up space. Finding new bugs daily now.

Java

Did you see that giant Allied TF in Tjilitjap It didn't fight very well, got surprised as well. 3 bb's torpedoed, a cl heavily damaged and a few dd's sunk.
Not a great result, but we're slowly reducing the Allied fleet in the area. My 3rd TF will move in an attempt to hit the enemy with more torps tomorrow. My
heavy cruisers are the queens of the battlefield in this context!

Not much fuel left in Batava - I've managed to spend it all before Al arrives Will consider another heavy surface sortie after replenishing the ships.
I may have to move them back to Singapore before sending them out again. The Yamato will most likely stay there... In 3-4 engagements it was the only
ship that didn't play an active part. It's best contribution is its ability to swallow up 1000lb bomb hits.

The KB has been spotted - well at least one or more ships - it will continue on its current course.

It seems like Waingapu will be recaptured easily enough, not a lot of troops there. We'll see tomorrow.
Tomorrow the forecast for Java says clear skies, so I've reactivated all of my naval bombers and Zeros again.

In Batavia, on Sumatra and Borneo we can muster the following number of ready ac:
160 Zeros
143 Betties
57 Nells
25 Kates (crack Daitai at Batavia)

The goal is to deliver one crippling blow to the Allied fleet around Tjilitjap. The enemy has moved many of his air assets into an inland
base and the CAP has been more dispersed. That's what I think anyway - so let's see what we can accomplish!

A few comments on yesterdays battle, it was late and I didn't have time to go much into details:

The major engagement of the day:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Tjilitjap at 19,62

Japanese Ships - the Yamato doesn't even take part in the battle
BB Yamato
CA Chokai, Shell hits 1
CA Myoko, Shell hits 2
CL Sendai, Shell hits 9, on fire
CL Naka, Shell hits 3
CL Nagara, Shell hits 1
DD Akigumo
DD Kazegumo
DD Kuroshio
DD Hayashio, Shell hits 1
DD Maikaze, Shell hits 4, on fire
DD Shiranuhi, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships - all the slow US bb's are torpedoed!
BB Tennessee, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
BB New Mexico, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1
BB Mississippi, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 1
CA Indianapolis, Shell hits 4
CA Chester, Shell hits 4
CA Vincennes, Shell hits 2
CL Leander, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
CL Sumatra
CL St. Louis
DD Meredith, Shell hits 1
DD Gwin, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
DD Hammann, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Mustin
DD Russell, Shell hits 1
DD Blue
DD Helm, Shell hits 2
DD Mahan
DD Drayton
DD Lamson
DD Porter
DD Monaghan
DD Allen
DD Litchfield
DD Inconstant
DD Lawrence

A few things becomes clear to me: The Allied fleet is built around a cadre of useless battleships and supported by toothless destroyers.
The big ships can't hit dip $hit while the destroyers doesn't really pose a threat to anything else than other destroyers. I assume that the bulk of the Allied heavy cruiser force has been torpedoed in the Java Sea - or is acting as carrier escorts.

My return with an inferior TF tomorrow is risky: I hope that my torpedo cruisers, including the floating torpedo batter Oi, can slow down a few Allied ships and make them easy targets for my naval bombers that have all been given a loose chain for tomorrow

With a sizeable IJN carrier force in the area, it seems highly unlikely that Wobbly will be able to extract his fleet in one piece.
Another turn incoming now...going to have a look ASAP!!

You are lucky that he built that one oversized TF - if he had built three smaller TFs instead, each built around one BB, one CA, one CL and a split of DDs then you would have likely ended up with lots and lots of damage. Huge SC TFs in this game are bad news for the owner and a blessing in disguise for the opponent.

You're right Dave - Al did me a favor when he gathered the ships in one big TF. I'm not sure the old bb's would have been very efficient in night
battles against my agile cruisers and destroyers though.

He tried another approach today....

Situation Report

India

My move with the battleships outside Karachi was a little bit too fancy. We moved south - Al stayed in place.
According to him there is no way he's going to be able to resist my assaults in India...we shall see about that.
From my point of view it seems like I got the edge in Ahmadabad - and Lucknow will fall in one or two days.
I've now all but cut off the retreat route into Dehli. (I will attach a second picture in the next post)

The move into Burma from Asansol has begun: Almost 2 divisions are on the move.

Java

Now what did the Kiwi do today! He disbanded all his bb's and cruisers into Tjilitjap port!
Probably saved them from the wrath of the naval bombers. The single TF that went in mauled several enemy destroyers,
but I lost a handful of the small ships myself. Must say that I'm pleased with the results, I've now removed many capable vessels
from the Allied rost with relatively little effort.

More clear weather tomorrow: The Sallys in Borneo will conduct a full scale daylight attack against enemy fields in Java.
We're going to try to win air supremacy over the island!

Most of the naval bombers are also ready, but 50 of them have been ordered on a night bombing mission against Tjilitjap.
54 ships in port! Have to smoke them out.

The Yamato is dispatched towards Singapore - still got 17 fires and 32 sys damage. Need a few months in dock.
I also have to move half of my fleet back to Singapore as the harbour in Batavia refused to reload their torpedo batteries, and
there are no more fuel reserves. A 15 ship TF has been sent back into the India Ocean - I wish to hit Batavia again.

'Found' another full strength Zero Daitai in the Marianas - sent to Balikpapan.

Wobbly now knows were the KB is, and still no sight of the enemy. There are 2 alternatives:
1. The undamaged ships have raced down to Perth
2. The entire Allied carrier fleet is still somewhere to the west in the Indian Ocean

We're going to continue to move south until we get closer to the edge of the map - then we swing west on a W-NW course.
I don't think the damaged HMS Indestructible, Enterprise and Lexington can put on enough speed to get to Perth, and I want them - badly!

Here's a sit map over India: As you can see I'm trying to envelop Dehli.
Not an enviable situation and I can understand Wobblys frustration! Will it be possible to deliver the final coupe de grace?

Imagine a Japanese Empire spanning from India to Alaska and from China to Australia and New Guinea
