Can somebody explain how opportunity fire works?

I never get more than 2 shots. I can have 50 units that can fire, but I never get more than 2 units to fire. However, when I've fought the Brits or the Germans, they will often get 3 shots.

There's a lot of intricacies involving Opportunity Fire.

To name a few:
Moral/Experience
Spotting Ability
Weapon Effectiveness vs Target
FIRE CONTROL number
Suppression

possibly also...
Defend/Advance stance
Status (Pinned, In Cover, etc ..)
Target's time in Field of Vision

From personal observation ....
Weapon Effectiveness plays the most part ...
Then Experience/Moral/Fire Control is checked.

Experienced troops with effective weaponry can put a huge
amount of Op Fire in your face. Especially at 1 hex range.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh - and it doesn't matter if you "save" shots either.

Take all your available shots during your turn.

As far as I know, you only get two units to fire per opportunity, but the AI frequently gets more. I guess it needs all the help it can get...

I dunno 'bout that ...

Load up Jess' (?) Battered Bastards of Bastonge mini-map campaign
and watch the wall of fire the American Paratroopers put up.

I could swear there's more than 2 units firing sometimes .....

Thanks guys,
I know for a fact that the AI gets more than 2 shots sometimes. I set up a meeting engagement between 3000 points of 1939 German tanks vs 3000 points of Polish T7s. So no great fire control or moral or experience - although the Germans do have a little higher of each. None of the German tanks have more than one cannon so it's pretty easy to tell when they get 3 units to shoot. Also, I had not gotten any closer than 7 hexes...

The Brits occasionaly got 3 shots in my long WWII campaign in 1941. I know they have no great fire control either, and I'm sure my experience and moral were a bit higher also.

I guess I'll chock it up to giving the AI some help.

The AI gets more Op-fire. Matrix explained that it balances out the AI's lack of AI. The player gets two per turn. What irritates me is that it will have your tanks that are down to MG's only Op-fire when you have tanks in LOS with main gun rounds left, or it will pick one of your tanks across the entire map instead of the tank two hexes from the enemy to Op-fire. If you refuse an op-fire, it should move to the next unit of yours and ask if you want that one to op-fire, etc.

Saving shots does affect your op-fire according to the manual. If you have 5 shots from your main gun saved, then you can fire it more times during op-fire than if you only had one or none left during your turn.

Experience plays a big role, I have seen units with high experience fire more shots than their Max shot limit, I believe it was due to their experience

I just finished a 2/42 battle against the Brits. (I hate fighting in the snow) Most of my tank commanders are over 100 experience. It took 4 of them to kill one stinking Matilda. I can hardly wait to get some Tigers...
The first MkIV took a step forward and found the Matilda, range 3 the shot glanced off the IV, so I found another who could move up and get a side shot (also range 3), the Matilda fired at the second IV, but missed. So the first shot (IV A) and missed, the Brit fired at IV A, and missed, so IV B fired and glanced, the Brit fired again. So IV A fired and shattered, Brit fired again. Ok, he's fired 5 times so far - and I don't want to use up all my shots, I'm sure more Brits will show up when it's their turn. I decided to move up a PZ-IIIh. He had to move a ways but ended up 2 hexes away with good a decent shot (48%) and fired. no return fire, so I fired again, and again, and again and again - 5 misses, I think the last two were upper 60's - after the last shot, the Brit bounces a shot off the PZ-III and knocks out the gun. So IV B shoots and bounces, and the Matilda shoots and bounces (we're up to 7 shots now) Finally, I figure he must be out of shots or ammo by now, I move the LaS 762 up (range 6), first shot, low percentage (under 20), dead Matilda.

Go figure.

Worth to remember is that you must not use more than half of your vehicles allottet movement allowance when you shoot at the enemy in the same turn! Otherwise you are considered shooting on the move! Only moving half movement points is probably considered moving and then shooting from short halts ect. Also closing to range 6 or below gives you the chance for "vulnerable location" hits which make KV´s or Matilda´s way less invulnerable.
