Maybe someone can give me hint on this...

at an isolated JN base (Truk) there is one CA in the port... no other ships. I've tried for months to sink this sucker... over 200 bomb hits from various aircraft... this thing should be at the bottom (and I WOULD like the cruiser points!)
I understand there needs to be float damage to sink her, but I can't get any torps to find her... any ideas as to how to accomplish this?

subs in the harbor? PT's? send some destroyers???

I suppose the CA is docked so any surface TF will not find her.

A bombardment TF may hit it with shells but several BBs will be necessary to sink her.

B-17 may sink her but probably not at extended ranges. Sometimes their bombs get trough a CA armor. A port attack with SBDs can do the trick.

I guess Truk is a level 9 port so any ship not sunk at once will be saved.

After 200 bomb hits, this CA is probably at 99 SYS damage with no more guns remaining. You can score 35 points (or 50 depending of the CA) much faster than by trying to sink her.

I have heavy bombers coming from long distances, constantly pummeling her, but they're just 500 pounders and (assumingly) not getting through the superstructure... every time I have a 4 CV TF passing, I always stop for a few waves.... still she floats!

so if a ship is anchored... there's no way to get at her with any sort of torp-carrying TF?

Ships docked at a level 3 (or is it 4), size port cannot be engaged in surface combat (by subs or TFs). The only way to do it, is thru your SBDs carrying 1000 lb pound bombs. The 500 lbers on your B-17s can't penetrate the deck armor of the larger IJN CAs. Even with the SBDs, you'll have a hard time "sinking" her. You're causing explosive damage and fires, which are likely very quickly put out because of the large port size.

If you're really obsessed with sinking her, you can send a few BBs in and shell the place. Hope that some of your large guns hit her. Don't send in escorts, because Truck has some impressive CD guns, and they'll clobber your escorts. You could probably put CAs in the mix (6" CD guns won't really hurt CAs or BBs). And shell the place constantly (while you're sending in the SBDs even).

Or you could invade the place, and she'll scuttle when you capture the base.

But either way, that's a lot of time and effort just trying to kill one CA. You'd get more points expending the ordinance on and enemy AF (by killing planes).

I had a similar experience with the Furutaka in Rabaul. I hit the bloody thing for 5 months with everything I had, 17s, 24s, 25s, 3 large CV strikes (2 by 2 CV TFs), all set on port. After I got bored with the game and decided to abandon it, I looked at the AI's side to see what damaged I caused. My jaw dropped. The mighty Furutaka had 17 sys and 3 flt.

CA Nachi took something like 20 bombs and 9 torpedos before going down in Manila bay.

And don't you dare to touch my japanese cruisers, yes!?

Do not underestiminate the 6" rapid fire guns

Luskan lost 1 CA & 4 DD's trying to catch mighty CL Boise in Dec 41 in our game !

I lost Boise, he lost 1 CA & 4DD's - I think it was a good exchange

I've just run into a similar problem. A bunch of IJN ships are severely damaged and hiding in Palembang harbor (early 1942). I used a bombardment of CAs had hit an IJN CL after she was severely damaged by a prior torpedo attack. She took 17 hits in harbor and still seems to be afloat. I'm going to try going after her with Dutch torpedo bombers next.

Pretty cruiser! She'll look great in Ballard's underwater photography shots!

Oh, yes. I'd get anywhere from 5 to 10 hits a day with whatever 17s and 24s carry to Rabaul from PM. On top of that I'm sure I logged at least 6 or 7 1000lb hits from the Navy types.

I was "engaged" by a Japanese bombardment TF at Rangoon (6 port) and lost 18 AKs (they were docked and unloading at the time) if I recall, one right after another, like so many ducks in a row. Go ask Chez. He'll tell you. (In fact it's in our AAR.)

They were docked and unloading? Does that mean they were not disbanded?

You should not be able to engage in surface combat with DISBANDED ships. However, you can engage in surface combat with DOCKED ships.

I believe that disbanded ships do unload. IIRC, it was added in WITP and not in UV.

As far as I know mine aren't unloading. For sure the manual reads the same as it did for UV. Maybe that's in one of those readme files for the upgrades, too.

Disbanded TFs will unload cargo, but very slowly - not as fast of efficiently as docked/nondisbanded TFs, but they do unload. Sometimes this is a good thing. Sometimes it is not a good thing (i.e. - you are trying to get supplies out of DEI when KB shows up - you disband TF. KB eventually sails away. You reform TF, and find most of your cargo back on shore).

If you don't believe it, try this experiment : load up a (small) transport, disband it, and check how much cargo it has in about 10 turns. Works for tankers, too. Alas, you can not disband a TF with troops on board.
