Wouldn't say that it's gamey Pauk, especially since both sides can use it. Mostly an option for the Jap player since its he who has to husband his insufficient resources. It's really a problem caused by missing game functionality, in real life it would have been a problem to divert a certain number of ac and pilots to a sqd.
I really hate it when I press 'accept replacements' and get 16 new ac and 0 pilots

Was considering to allow David to move his ships out - or even to evacuate Java or India. Decided that he didn't want any petty mercy! Even if autovictory should be achieved, I hope he will continue the war. Even an autovictory would depend on the Allies will to negotiate, and I'm not sure they would do that no matter how bas the situation had looked in 42. A really big advantage is what Japan needs to make the game come alive through 43 and 44. After that it will be one way drive only anyway!

So we're going to have our fun now, and then we'll handle the future in due time

Situation Report

India

Another 2 days of savage fighting and important gains have been made!
Ahmadabad is reeling under the assault and it's even possible that it will fall before the second army ground arrives.
Tomorrow we deliver a heavy assault against Dehli, and only heavy forts can delay its fall.

The fall of Dimapur also means that the Allies are too weak to prevent me from driving them into the feverish jungle!
I'm going to keep on attacking until the end of the railroad is reached.

Java

The remaining US ships are now fleeing north towards a most uncertain faith. Pursuit is slow as I don't have much fuel.
One cv group will try to catch up while Car Div 1 and 2 moves slowly back towards Java.

I've gathered many troops, fuel and supply in Kendari, Balikpapan, Tarakan, Palembang and Singapore.
Army bombers will soon be transferred from India and start a heavy bombing campaign against Java. Reinforcements are
being brought into Batavia by fast transport - there is 45k supplies here and 2.6 forts. A full division is soon going to be in place.
The same will be attempted on the southern part of the island, then we have our 'Russian bridge heads!

It seems like David is trying to preserve his supplies by not attacking my last bases. A little strange since Batavia got so much
to offer. One attack a few days ago and it had fallen. Had zilch to defend it with - but that's history.

A change of command often means that the new captain wants to do things his way. This may be both advantagous and dis-advantagous for us!

Here we can see how much experience the Daitai in China has gained since the last report a week ago or so. 1 pilot crashed on landing today

Soon the scene will be set for the final stage of the war in India: Karachi! Both Dehli ahd Ahmadabad will soon be occupied.
I'm putting together a plan...if anyone got any ideas I'm listening! There will be a lot of troops, forts, ac and ships and I'd like to suppress them as quickly as possible
while taking as few losses as possible

May have to transfer in fighters, bombers and more naval units in order to achieve this!

Java

More and more naval bomber units are being withdrawn and replaced by Sallys and Helens. Going to strike as hard and often as possible in order to 'soften up' the
defenders over the next couple of months. I said October, didn't ?

India

One important happening in Burma today: we drove the Allied defenders off the railorad and into a jungle hex with NO roads - a 1 mile pr day hex!
There is nothing left that can prevent me from rolling into Burma from India.

Still need another 3-4 days to reduce Dehli - the battle of attrition is still raging in Ahmadabad. Finally a quiet day in Bombay.

Java

Making preparations for the recapture of Java! Inf units are going to be moved to Batavia and the base just south of Soerabaja. When I have roughly 3-4 divisions
worth of troops here I will confront the Allied troops from two sides. When this have been done, the divisions from India will again be landed in the center of the island and divide the
Allied forces in two and roll them up

'Found' a new 36 ac Oscar I Daitai in northern Japan - it is upgradable to Tonys. Only 14 days until I start receiving 120 Tojo and Tonys pr month.
This will revigorate my air campaign in India, the DEI and China and give me a chance to rest and train the Zero squadrons.

I am amazed that ADavidB took this one on but maybe he is a mashocist at heart.

I will refrain from commenting for fear of giving away anything but I am curious about the ship losses. Any chance of a screen shot showing losses of the larger ships on both sides and the total ship loss numbers?

Well, it's certainly a challenge - and a chance to turn the tide against the invinsible Jap juggernaut! I'm certainly glad someone had the guts to give it a try, played for more than 7 months now and it would be sad to just put it to rest without knowing how it would all end.

I posted an overview of ship losses a few days ago Tom, so if you scroll back a page or two you should find it. Difficult to make all the ships fit in one screen shot, but you can get some more stats:

395 Allied ships have been sunk, totalling 5825 points. I still think a few ships are missing on this list.
164 Jap ships have been lost for a total of 1562 points. Almost a clean 4-1 odds!

India

A rough day for the troops in India, the defenders in Dehli are putting up a good fight and even with 5 engineers regiments I can't reduce the forts.
Bombay isn't hit, but my ac are repairing incredible slow even though base damage is light and supplies and support is plentiful.

We're preparing to continue the drive into Kohima. The historical defeat of 44 will not repeat itself!

Java

With the sinking of the last damaged battleship, the KB can finally retire. It needs some R&R now, I still got a job left for it..!

David is playing hardball with his bombers, and it isn't difficult to find a pattern. Al learned the hard way that I'm usually a quick learner

The LRCAP over Batavia was an astoundishing success, even with 50% green pilots we achieved a series of victories.
Some stats:

30 Jap ac were lost, including 24 Zeros in A2A combat.
103!! Allied ac were lost, including ca 45 bombers and 50 fighters.

It's very rare that I can achieve almost a 4-1 kill ratio in the air. Hopefully this will have weakened the Allied AF in Java beyond repair.
There are still a strong batch of Wildcats over Soerabaja, but otherwise it's getting thin. Time to step up bombardment runs and prepare
the Army Air Force!

First, thanks for this wonderful AAR that you three are making. You give me the taste to play this game ... when i will have a little more free time.

Second, it's just seems that you're reaching a stalemate in India while it's turning into an attrition battle. In Ahmadabad, you don't have any more fortification to reduce and even if the allies take a little more losses than you, you can't made better than a 0/1 odd. What are you planning to correct this :

- make a rotation among the attacking troop to allow some of them to rest while preventing allied fort to raise and their troop to rest?

- send some of the army bombers in burma back there rather than going for Java?

- take some troop from Delhi to give some help?

About Delhi now, how can an 1/1 odd against a fort level 5 become a 0/1 against a fort level 3? Have you an explaination?

Glad you're enjoying it Titi! I read up on Uncommon Valor AAR's for 6 months before I started playing it. By then I had assimilated enough info to get a flying start!
Reasonable questions you're asking and I'm already taking action:

The troops in Ahmadabad rested today (not posted this AAR yet) and they will rest tomorrow. Then I will try to attack again.
In Dehli I will first reduce the forts to 0, see what odds I get and then rest them for 2-3 days if it doesn't work.

Fatigued troops can reduce forts and kill enemies, but they just doesn't get the odds!!
Quite simple it seems...but it's difficult to rest the troops cause the forts come back up again and fatigue and disruption levels soars straight
back up after a single attack.

I'm resting a lot of army bombers in Dacca now and I'm building a Zero reserve in Singapore. I'm also moving crack units out of Bombay.
When these groups have rested and numerous engineering units have moved into Bombay to repair damage ASAP, things will start to happen.

A powerful carrier group will sail to Karachi together with 2-3 strong surface combat groups. They will join the 4 battleship tf off Bombay and
go on and kill the British fleet there. I'm only going to use the carriers to provide CAP and when my bb's have bombed Karachi into the stoneage the
now rested Indian Air Fleet will strike from Bombay (and Ahmadabad I hope). Thus it becomes impossible for David to keep his ac operational and my
troops can move in to deliver the coupe de grace.

Incredible what good ideas you get while waiting for public transport, isn't it

After bombarding Ahamadabad for 2 days another deliberate attack has been ordered. I want to see what effect less fatigued troops has on the result.
Another attack in Dehli to reduce the last level of forts, then we rest for two days before trying to settle the issue.

There are many crack pilots in Bombay now, and the top ace got 19 kills. The unescorted Allied bombers have to run a gauntlet to drop their loads.

I have been resting my Zero pilots, but tomorrow a dual strike against Java has been ordered by 200 Army bombers escorted by 150 Zeros.

18 SS... oops... do you stop building all SS at start as some people do ?

I like especially Glen-carrying subs, I use them for intel cruises. They will sail along known Allied paths but not on it and will guide other subs of the KB or whatever else I have. If they are seen they will leave quickly.

I have done wonders in UV in 1943 with IJN subs chasing only cripples and doing an occasional foray deep in enemy area. I plan to do the same in WITP.

No no, subs are very important - and even though Allied ASW has way too many of my boats than it realistically should have - I'm still pleased with how they've performed. Many capital ships have been torpedoed and the use of Glen spotters player an important role when we rolled up the fleeing Allied fleets in the Indian Ocena.

You're right Laurent - the search plane subs are valuable. I should have tried to preserve those boats better. I will receive quite a few new ones over the next few years though. Spotting and finishing off cripples are their most important tasks. It's suicide to get entangled with ASW groups. So from now on I'll
keep most of em in port and only send them out when I expect that something big is about to happen.

Situation Report

India

No respite from the heavy airstrikes now all coming from Karachi. I'll keep my small cadre of Zeros there. This is a pain I have to live with until 'measures' can be taken.
Tomorrow I'm taking a chance - a shock attack against Ahmadabad. After achieving a 1-1 odds and seeing that further attacks hasn't been cancelled, I wanted to try something new.
Worst case: heavy heavy losses
Best case: Ahmadabad falls

In Dehli we have to continue to slug it out and reduce the defenders. It just can't continue as I outnumber them 3-1 and is inflicting more casualties than I'm taking.

Java

The appearence of 27 crack Wildcats over Java caused considerable losses, so did heavy flak. Most of the fighters seems to have been moved to northern Java now, hopefully
we can wipe them out soon. 2 Zero Daitais were moved back into Batavia and put on 70% CAP. The fast transport group is currently unloading elements of the 21st Mixed Bde there.
I'm resting my squadrons in Sumatra and Borneo - missions every 3rd day at most. Fatigue goes up to 20~ after a single long range mission.

Tomorrow another bombardment goes in against Soerabaja - this tf will also retire to Singapore to prepare for operation 'Sumo'!
Two carriers divisions will steam through the straight between Java and Sumatra tomorrow. There is a risk, but since the fighters are put on 90% CAP, any small or medium sized strike will
most likely only bring destruction to the attackers.

India

The plan to capture Ahmadabad worked! What excellent news

I can't even remember how long we have fought to dislodge the stubborn garrison? Didn't think it could be done until the army now in Dehli could
join in. Dehli is also doomed now and all the troops that will be available for the defense of Karachi are those who defended Ahmadabad + reserves in the city itself.
All the men in Dehli will be forced to retreat to Lahore or Rawalpindi. Suits me well!

I know have to rest my men and gather strength for the final effort and assault that will end the struggle for India.

Java

My fuel starved carriers moved to Batavia at full speed - and as predicted numerous Allied bombers arrived and we managed to shoot down most of them.
I knew there was a small risk, and of course 1 of only 3 SBD's to break through the CAP managed to hit an escort carrier. The following fuel storage explosion caused 43 sys damage
and 33 fires! Not good at all and the ship is probably out of action for 6 months or so. The light Car Div 3 was in dire need of repair and refit anyway. Car Div 3 will be put in reserve, the cvl
Soho sent back to Japan to train new carrier pilots.

The escort carrier was disbanded into Batavia, hopefully this will make it possible to put out the fires quickly before too much sys damage is absorbed. It also made it possible to transfer 4 Kates to
the cv Junyo. The 25 Zeros were moved ashore and there are now 75 fighters providing CAP over the base.

If I'm not mistaken, air superiority over Java has now been regained! If this is the case, fighters can be moved to India to support the final offensives there.

Situation Report

Things have calmed down a bit, Car Div 2 and 3 have arrived in Singapore and are now awaiting Car Div 1 and a large replenishment fleet.
A weeks rest will do the ships good, the carriers have accumulated sys damage between 2 and 13 now.

The escort carrier that got hit off Batavia managed to put out all her fires in port and is now sailing with an escort towards Singapore.
Sys damage is 50, will require 3 months in port or so.

6 more days and the new carrier Hiyo will arrive in Tokyo, together with the Junyo and the damaged cvl's it will make up Car Div 3.
Car Div 1 and 2 will be combined for Operation 'Sumo' - the subducation of Karachi.

A Zero Daitai has been moved to Bali and will protect the base and provide LRCAP for convoys in the area.
I'm slowly taking control in the air and on the sea - the enemy is still superior on the ground but not for long....

Ok....Dehli is ours!

Allied troops in India are split in two, so first we're going to reduce the 'Lahore-Rawalpindi pocket'
Overwhelming force will be used to make sure it doesn't drag out. The base were the Allies doesn't make a stand will be captured quickly
Moving several more AA regiments and base forces into Ahmadabad.

Is David resting his heavies in Karachi, or doesn't they want to fly? Must be a lot of ac in the size 4 af now.

The port attack against Tjilitjap cost me 11 bombers to flak alone. 21 Allied ac were shot down today and while a few squadrons continue to fly
strikes, the raids are getting smaller and smaller.

Situation Report

Ground units are making good progress towards Lahore, should be possible to capture the base quickly I hope.
3 AA regiments in Ahmadabad now and several construction units are pooring into Bombay in an effort to repair damage faster than it can be inflicted.

A large raid against Colombo succeeds in destroying a few ac and sink a sub. Another few strikes should be able to deplete supplies and close the
place down. 38k troops there that would be much easier to defeat after a few months of starvation.

In Java things have calmed down - mostly interested in digging in and bringing in reinforcements.

Situation Report

India

It looks like the Allied troops from Dehli are trying to reach Rawalpindi - David probably want to buy as much time as possible.
No problem really as I need another month to prepare for the assault on Karachi.

In Burma/India we drive the Allies out of Kohima and Ledo and onto the paths leading to Mandalay and Myitkyina.
The concludes the limited offensive, a last effort will be made after India falls to capture the 3 remaining British bases in Burma and seal of China.
This will require another 2 divisions and some engineers. For now another division has been freed for offensive operations in India - I'm considering to
send it to Karachi together with the KB.

Java

Another fast transport unloads another batch of troops at Batavia, air strikes claim a bomb hit to a cl but many ac were shot down.
The 1st Car Div is now 2 days out of Singapore, it will aquire a few days rest before again sailing for the Indian Ocean. Several ships are slated for an upgrade in August, but this will be delayed until later this year. It's important to settle things in India and Java.

More of the same in the air : raids against Bombay and Ahmadabad, Buna, Timor etc.
I drop paras at Rawalpindi to disrupt Allied troop movements. When I defeated Lahore the troops there retreated towards Malir into the wilderness.
There are mostly base forces in this base, should be enough to chase my little rag tag bunch away, hopefully onto the main railroad line in front of the
city. The road towards Rawalpindi is now all but open and an Allied collapse in this region should be imminent.

The Hiyo has arrived and sailed immediately for Singapore were she will take on additional experienced aircrew and planes.

Not a lot going on! The usualy bombing raids...could show this one:
AAA at Maloelap has been reinforced by a few Zero's. The little island is going to be hard
to subdue from Tarawa!

Not going to put my AF to use in India for now, it should be possible to reduce Karachi without going head to head with the hundreds of
fighters and bombers there. It will now be 3-4 weeks before the preparations for this big assault are complete.

The KB will load extra fighter Daitais and provide an extremely heavy CAP 5 hexes off Karachi - out of range of torpedo bombers and most Allied
fighters. Then my numerous cruiser and battleship tfs can hammer Karachi until there's nothing left but rubble

Same old, same old...! A sweep over Bandoeng saw 5 Zeros lost for 3 Warhawks.
In Ahmadabad the Wellingtons attacked my bb's and scored a few glancing hits.
Moved 80 fresh Zeros into Hyderabad - will fly the occasional LRCAP to clip down a
few Bombay raiders now and then.

The fleet in Singapore is waiting for tankers and repairing damage. Will consider to bring
the Hiyo and Junyo to Karachi as well! One huge KB Death Star fleet that will provide a
really powerful CAP.

Do you seriously consider this? Wouldn't it be good to keep him in the dark about the location of some of your CVs? Otherwise you might encourage him for further pushes into SRA (Timor or Amboina comes to mind), or somewhere in the Pacific.

Yes I am - cause a few small cv's wouldn't really be anything I'd like to send against 4 US cv's anyway.
After the pummeling the Allies took outside Java, I'd be surprised if they came back in 42. I now got hundreds of naval bombers in the area and there are
sizeable garrisons on Timor.

The KB only needs to be away for a month or so. They will come back with a large and victorious army from India I hope....then we'll reclaim our land in the SRA!

A quiet day: My troop transports are unloading at Manlang and a few Allied bombers intervened.
Only one ship got hit and no troops were lost. Soon there will be 70k Jap troops on Java.

In India most of the enemy troops have marched into Rawalpindi! I'm going to try to encircle them before
capturing the base. That will bag me 30-40k troops.

The KB carriers are repairing nicely in Singapore and I'm moving more base forces towards Dehli.
Many Zero Daitais have now been moved back to India since they're no longer needed in the DEI.

Hi John,
I've been following this AAR since the start. I must admit to checking it more than once each day hoping for an update.

So far I can't think of a better IJN start.(exceot for Hiryu/Soryu

) You have pushed the Allies to the brink in India. But instead of pushing for the jugular you are off chasing defeated forces off your main axis of attack. It sort of reminds me of the Kiev offensive during Barbarossa. Yes the Germans captured lots of troops but lost the initiative on thier main axis. I fear I see the initiative leaning towards the Allies while you are off at Rawalpindi.

I don't have a good enough feel for how long it will take the Allied divisions to recover at Karachi with unlimited supply. I just have this suspicion it will be before you can finish off Rawalpindi.

Anyway just something to think about. Great game so far!!

Hi Quark! Thx for the comments - good ones as well.

There are several reasons for my detour into Rawalpindi:

1. My divisions in Ahmadabad are in a bad shape after a full month of siege warfare. Only 50% of the suqads - or less - are undamaged.
They really need a few weeks of rest.
2. I've defeated the forts in Rawalpindi, so the door is open. I can bag 30-40k troops there with overwhelming force. If I leave it I will have to come
back for them later when I really want to move divisions out of Karachi and down to the DEI.
3. I don't have sea or air superiority over Karachi. If I move in I will be bombed a dozen times each day - and this makes fatigue and disruption sky rocket.
If I enter Karachi now, the enemy fleet can bombard me daily - I would die.
4. In order to gain sea and local air superiority I need to prepare 150 Zeros and most of the Combined Fleet. The Fleet is almost ready but need to flesh out a few Daitais and repair a few points of sys damage. The Kaga had 15 but is now down to 13.
5. In order to sail such a large fleet up to Karachi I need massive fuel supplies. I'm in the process of organizing this and it will take another week or so.

My reasoning is that the extra time given to the Allies to prepare will benefit me more than them. The used of combined air, sea and land forces is a must as I see it, and it will be another 3 weeks before the fleet is in place.

Do you still think I should ignore these facts and march enmasse on Karachi? There are most likely 9 forts there + Malir, 500 ac + remains of the RN.

Good to hear your opinion, makes me think - I'll chew on the facts for a while
