Ok Halsey....you asked you got This is a mod of the GC with me as the Liberators and Ron as the Imperialist Devils using 2 day turns.

Getting more practice as Japan GC lately than i've wanted. It aint easy being cheesy but i'm almost starting to get a hang on this monster of Turn 1 start.

House rules we agreed to include, limited allied movement/orders Turn 1 in exchange for a fairly conservative Japanese turn 1 (which i do anyway...hell i'm still refining a decent turn 1 period)

No night bombing save for night specific units, no sub troop landings (Ron wanted to be able to evac cadres though), Reasonable TF/ASW TF sizes and no insta evac of Dutch units (to represent the political situation)

My plans for the liberation of Asia are conservative but refined. My last PBEM was interesting in that I tried a radically different strategy..some of it was good, some bad. Biggest bad point was that I attempted to much at the same time and over extended myself, conducting ops not only in Malaya, PI and Borneo but also the Solomons (Rabaul) and an invasion of Burma all at the same time. The Rabaul op eventually turned into target practice once my opponent learned I was weak there and while I did in fact occupy most of Burma and cut the Burma road...my thrust at Akyab was defeated and I was too weak to take Lashio and Mytk in the NE part of the country with air superiority in Allied hands.

The most interesting part though was my decision to invade the PI's along a time table similar to the actual Japanese plan, only reinforcing the historical LCU's with a few regimental/BN sized support units instead of the usual massive reinforcement most players preferred. The result was a situaiton very similar to RL where the Japanese ended up seiging the Allies along a triangle defense of Clark , Ling. Bay and Bataan with the two sides being fairly equal with neither strong enough to defeat the other.

Meanwhile the divisions usually sent to the PI instead launched Phase II of the SEI occupation and swept into Kendar, SE Borneo and Timor, ending with a divisional landing in Southern Java....All this while operations in Malaya and PI continued. An interesting and not entirely unsuccessful variation but one that required careful management.

Here....Imperial HQ has decided to be more conservative and ensure that operations are conducted with enough supporting aircover and sea cover to ensure a quick and steady advance. I did opt for one bold move....adding Kuantan in Malaya to my list of turn 1 invasions along with the typical landing at KB. Purpose being to establish a better located base for the 5th Air Division to operate from ensuring better air coverage once established. The risky part was that such a landing would be dangerously close to Singapore and other supporting airfields allowing both LB and torpedo aircraft to operate against my surface forces mostly bereft of aircover until a base could be captured. This was a risky gamble for me given that even having landed at KB in my last game, my opponent made life very difficult for me using the RAF with many ships damaged. Here the risk would be greater but so would the rewards.

Operations elsewhere would fall within a fairly typical and conservative pattern though the PI invasion would be heavily reinforced by followup units in order to quickly secure this hotbed of Angry Americans led by a Canadian general known for his boozing and shouting at subordinates.

let the liberation begin!!!!

Summary

Imperial HQ is thus far very pleased with the course of events so far...except for that unfortunate incident with the cruiser . All landing operations have successfully concluded and Imperial forces everywhere are advancing. Little sign so far of enemy naval resistance other than a few isolated submarine attacks and some PT forays, nothing our brave boys cant handle. Soon phase II of our glorious liberation shall begin. Inteligence reports indicate that the boozer Canadian commanding the American forces in the Philippines attempted to slip away by PT boat. Unfortunately for his staff, the General decided that he was best qualified to pilot the boat and in his drunken state sailed too far south where our brave Zero pilots then proceeded to use him for target practice. As last reported the enemy general could be seen zig zagging wildly...throwing beer to try to put out the fires and shouting something about ASW....

More news and maybe a few pics to follow. Stay tuned and look for Co-Prosperity at an island near you!

I tried two games at once - theres just no way I could find the time. The scary thing is I am a lazy idle toad, its not like I'm working or anything...

Shame, I'd like to try Japan out to see things from the other side.
If only so I can inform my Allied game better, by becoming more intimate with Japans capabilities.

1. Formatic Speed modifications to fighter aircraft. Purpose is to reduce the effect of the "speed" variable in A2A combat. Blunts extreme situations such as Nate/Claude vs anything or A6M vs F4U. Increases the importance of experience. Speed remains the most important variable....just not so overwhelmingly so that it negates all other variables

2. Armament mod for Ki-27/43 and A5M4. makes them viable, (if outdated in the case if Nate and Claude) aircraft in the game vs flying targets. Ki-43 MVR altered slightly

3. DUR change for all aircraft. (increased)

4. IJN sub fix vs ASW. IJN Subs removed from production and added to game with a FAQ for historical deployment. (Thx Irrelevent!) IJN subs in early half of war can now survive Allied ASW attacks better in deep water hexes.

5. Merchant DUR mod. - Halved mechant DUR to account for the fact that they were not built with survivability in mind nor were their crews trained to the same degree in DC as naval vessels.

6. AA modification : increased effectiveness to compensate for aircraft DUR change

7. IJN cruiser main turret protection corrected. (25mm)

8. DD gun values adjusted in an attempt to get them to be able to penetrate lightly armored targets at close range (un-perfected as of yet)

9. Altered the starting pilot pools and pilot production rate. Purpose: to prevent the sudden complete drop in pilot quality and change it instead to a gradual drop dependant on attrition levels experienced during 1st year of fighting.

10. Heavy bomber loadouts reduced by 50%.

11. B-17 production altered. (lowered....majorly)

12. Ron S. button added. Think Murphy's Law....Canadian style.

13. Some other minor OOB tweaks. (example: some CV deck armor altered to allow 500lb GP penetration of their wooden flight decks)

#4 ASW teak. So far it has prevented the Allied ASW from launching attacks which show on animation screen with DCs actually dropping (either hits or misses)...you know the one. Interesting that they worked the durability into this to this degree as it frigs with the VP and damage relationships vs other vessels and weapons...ie...how many 5" shell hits could an otherwise vulnerable sub endure? Or bomb hits?

Good to know anyway.

Really?

Not what i'm seeing on my replays. On at least 2 of the 4 failed ASW attacks thus far on my Iboats, i've seen DD's displaying the msg that they are attacking with Mk 6 or Mk7 Depth Charges....but missing.

What...you didn't believe me the last several times i mentioned it during pre-CHS discussions? ah well...noone listened to me about the armor thing either.

the DUR rating vs. penetrating damage doesn't matter vis-a-vis "how many shells/bombs" can they take. Its FLT damage that sinks subs, not SYS. Even with increased DUR..subs tend to take large FLT damage hits when they are struck/damaged by devices

That's why I said "you know the ones". The animation screen SAYS the DD is dropping devices but they don't actually explode on the screen as hit or miss.

Actually I was kind of skeptical about this as it seems to me to be a very destablizing way of approaching the problem of sub evasion and depth capability. Always agreed with you about armour as armor over magazines should never have been placed at deck level for simplicity reasons.

ah....

thats good right?

-Animations:

As Mogami has repeatedly said...we cant take what we see on the combat animations as literal....but with a heavy dose of interpretation. My take as mentioned in our previous discussions is that msg displays of "Fails to Find sub" or "Fails to HIT sub" represent complete misses (i.e. out of the ballpark.....or never even located the sub to attack)

while mgs of "DD/PG/MSW attacking with Mk-x DC" represent close in attacks, whether or not there's an animation of "Shell splashes" being shown on the screen. If no hit is displayed they can be considered "near misses" while "hits" for damage can be considered either direct hits or close enough detonations to damage the sub.

In the end, combat animations are filler for entertainment while the code in the background calculates and resolves the actual battles behind the scenes.

Course in the end the point is that my Iboats survived to say NEENER to you. hee hee!

ok...you should say so then. (about the armor) You tend to go all silent at times unless your really upset about something so its hard to guage whether or not your agreeing or fuming over a beer

on the sub change. The only thing it "destabilized" was the production component. My tests showed that even with the DUR increase, when struck by DC's the sub was still gravely wounded because the key variable is FLT damage, not SYS. However the subs in some cases "do" survive the damage a little better too and that i like as well.....less sinkings, more damages.

Yeah, that's good. Opens up a few possibilities to frig with in the editor for the CHS. I'd still like to see more attacks which show up as loads of exploding DCs which miss with a few hits...all for the added suspence it would provide.

I refer to combat animations for ease of differentiating between the complete miss (which does not use ammo but which the devs have class as an attack) and the actual animations which do see expenditure of ammo. Because only the actual combat animations of DCs exploding expend ammo, I don't rate anything else as an "attack", simply a vain search. Since we have not seen any actual DCs explode and ammo expended, I stated that we have yet to see an Allied ASW vessel "attack" a sub.

Understood. As previously discussed...i think the whole Ammo thing is abstracted too because "ammo points" are an abstraction. I think that ammo points "only" get expended under certain conditions in order to prevent escorts from too quickly running out of DC's so msg displays of DD x fails to HIT sub wont expend ammo but the ship can still have been considered to have "dropped a few" over the side.

Actually this view is not the case either. As I've posted before, the original dbase had DC ammo representing INDIVIDUAL DCs on racks, with reloads for K guns but none for rails aside from the total published in Conway's (on rails plus reloads). I found this out when I inadvertantly forgot to "translate" the 25 DC load for Bassets into what I "thought" were patterns available (drop 6 DC/pattern = 4 Ammo was my understanding). I was asked about this and told original design was for individual DCs...so the actual DCs dropped are INDIVIDUAL DCs, and very accurate ones indeed. I thought and stated this was ridiculous and changed the ammo on ships accordingly to represent patterns and this was accepted. Because the devs want us to believe that DCs are expended when they are not , I'm thinking I should cut the DC ammo by 50% across the board in the CHS to accomodate this approach. Historically, many subs escaped because the escorts hunting them simply ran out of ammo.

Nikademus, can you go into more detail about aircraft mods?
Any database file/exported CSV would be greatly appriciated.

I'm trying to do a similar mod, but don't want to overdo anything and end up with far out unhistorical stats. Thanks.

Not without writing a novel. maybe i'll have time later

for now, did you have a specific question?

Edit: sorry if i'm sounding like i'm coming off coy. My original intention was to submit the mod for public use with a fat sized FAQ explaining the changes...all of which i havn't done yet. I've run one test game so far with Drongo and we toyed even then with the idea of posting a public AAR on it but never did. Idea came back to me after a recent thread discussion involving ASW.

Yeah - what are new aircraft speed & dur values?
(not exactly specific... )

OK, no prob. When you get around to it...

All fighter aircraft speeds have been adjusted based on a forumla that essentially brings their listed maximum speed closer to a median value of 350mph. What this means in as novel-less a way as I can think at this early time in the morning (with coffee mug a steam'in) is the speed differences between aircraft will be reduced the farther their listed maximum speed is from 350. So aircraft such as the P40E will hardly change at all but aircraft like the F4U-4D or Ki-27 will see substantial speed changes (Lower in the case of the Corsair...higher in the case of the Nate) Speed difference ratios are preserved between airframes but reduced so that the impact of the speed variable in the A2A forumula is less dramatic. The purpose of this exercise is to eliminate extreme situations between the aircraft with medium+ differences in max speed that produce lopsided kill ratios regardless of other variables. I have been playing with this mod for a while now and have really liked what i've seen. A side benefit has been a slightly reduced bloodiness factor as fighter aircraft wth closer speed values spar more often with no result vs the usual pulse of fire that leads to a single engined death. Speed remains one of the key variables and say pitting a Ki-27 against an F4U will still see the latter having a huge tactical advantage, all other variables being even. (Heartfelt thx extended to fellow tester Chris Rickard for coming up with this idea after oh....hundreds of email exchanges discussing the air model during our spare time between builds)

DUR change for aircraft. All aircraft in the game have had their DUR values increased by 50%

Other aircraft changes - Ki-43, A5M4 and Ki-27 have a modified gun armament added to the OOB and the Ki-43 received a 1 MVR point increase. The gun modified 7.7/12.7 units are identical to the stock OOB version save that their ACC is increased by 50%. These new weapons are identified by a (c) designation (Centerline) Purpose: To address the lopsided preformance of these aircraft in combat and balance the kill ratios better and produce more reasonable and historically plausible conclusions. The result is that, with a substantial exp gap, these outdated planes can better hold their own vs. 1st generation Allied aircraft and in the case of the Oscar, can preform competetively depending on tactical circumstances. Reduces the need for Japan players to have to "prop up" the JAAF with Zero datai's even as early as 12/41. Also tweaked the starting exp slightly for the JAAF 5th Air Division which was the spearhead for the Malayan and Burma operations.

Some other aircraft stats tweaked, mostly armor changes for the older variants and adding additional armor for some 2nd generation allied craft.

End of month report - Dec 1941

The surprise attack at the American¡¦s primary Pacific naval base, Pearl Harbor succeeded brilliantly, knocking out the US fleet and paving the way for the rest of our operations. All Central Pacific targets, including the important American base at Wake Island have been captured with minimal losses.

For the most part, Phase I of the Empire¡¦s plan to liberate the Southern Resource Area from the Western powers has proceeded smoothly, and on schedule. In Mayala, air dominance has been established by the 5th Air Division of the JAAF and daily attacks continue on Allied communication and air support centers. Imperial troops have advanced steadily and have reached the Allied bastion of Malacca where Japanese army
Commanders expect to capture in short order.

In the Philippines, Imperial troops, after a lightning seizure of the capital city of Manila have advanced on the primary defensive position at Clarke Field and are at present organizing for the final offensive operations there. Mopping up operations continue in the Southern Philippines, resistance there is expected to end shortly.

Northern Borneo is secure and is providing flank protection for our forces conducting ops in Malaya and the PI.¡¦s Imperial HQ expects to launch Phase II shortly.

The only setbacks encountered so far have been on the Burmese border. A punitive offensive expedition by Commonwealth forces violated Siamese territory and invested the border town of Rahaeng. For over a week now counterattacking Imperial forces have been held back from retaking the town as Allied forces have put up an unexpected and very stubborn resistance. However Imperial HQ is pleased to announce that, with the assistance of the JAAF, the town¡¦s defense has been broken and Imperial troops have stormed the heart of the town driving out the last of the intruders and hurling them back across the border in disorder.

While the Emperor is pleased with this repelling of enemy forces from an Allied power's soil, he is less pleased with Burma Area Army¡¦s premature launching of a general offensive into Southern Burma. 25th Army forces, in conjunction with those operating in Siam, without first consulting Imperial GHQ, marched on and have captured the important town of Moulmein where recon units had detected the Allies were building a forward defensive line to protect Burma. While Imperial HQ appreciates the aggressive nature and fighting spirit of it¡¦s commanders, it would appreciate in the future if it's subordinate commands would adhere to the overall battle plan in order to not risk a reversal of Imperial fortunes and momentum. However, given the success at Moulmein, Imperial HQ is currently re-examining it¡¦s options in Burma. .

Plans to invade Karachi continue.

No sign of enemy naval forces. Cowards.

An exception to the above has been the early appearance of Allied submarines operating along the heavily traffic¡¦d lines between our forward bases in Formosa and the Phillpines. Fortunately Imperial HQ anticipated such a move and had assigned many escorts to protect the most important convoys. Regrettably, despite these counter-measures, Combined Fleet has not been able to prevent some convoys from suffering losses nor have they been able to provide adequate escorts to all routine and priority merchant groups. Losses have been modest however and few Imperial troops have been lost thus far and Inteligence has confirmed the sinkings of at least two submarines attempting to torpedo heavily laden merchants bringing supplies to our ever-victorious forces.

Meanwhile Imperial submarines have gone over to the offensive in the Southern Resource area and have torpedoed several merchants attempting to flee the area with their ill begotton booty. Like bandits in the night , they attempt to steal the life blood of the Empire. They deserve only death¡Knot to mention, no beer. (unless it¡¦s Canadian beer)

Overall, losses have been light though early merchant sinkings have become a concern for future operations and the transporting of vital resource back to the Empire. Imperial HQ has urged Combined Fleet to take the fight to the enemy as long as he continues to intrude his bandit marauder subs so deep into Imperial territory. YANKEE GO HOME ļ

Lord Ron has been sacked as all powerful Allied deity. Apparently such rudimentary tasks as mortal coil issues have negatively affected his ability to continue as commander. Strangely, the command has been assumed by nothing less than a Kaiser! How real is that, eh?!!

I'm concerned that as yet no Allied DC has been dropped (as per my definition of expended) on Japanese submarines encountered. Perhaps the durability tweak has made the Jap subs capable of diving below the detection radius of Allied sonar and depth of DCs. The tweak may have been too great but this is how we bracket targets(issues), with big corrections so we can actually get where we are going faster rather than with little girly tweaks which no tester can say does any good. Looks like Nik found a limit from which to work with regarding durability.

I mean actually shown to be dropping, with the big spalashes showing misses. This has not happened so no DCs have been dropped. Don't forget, unless this happens, no DCs are expended. The official statement that they are dropping in the distance and missing is suspect. Time will tell...

Go Kaiser go! Kick the Japs back to when cameras were not part of the "ensemble"!

Yep, I know thats how you interpret it. We just disagree here. Until Mike tells me differently, i see msgs of DD x fails to "hit" sub and more substantially, DD x dropping 4 x Mk 6 DC msgs (but with no "splashes" in the animation) as indications of dropped DC's.

what....no routing for me? Off with your head. (I wont use a gun because you've drunk so much booze there would probably be an explosion!)
