"Tae Guk Gi (The Brotherhood of War" :This is a 2004 Korean-made film which is now available on Cable Pay-Per-View. It is in Korean, of course, with English subtitles. It concerns two brothers whose lives are shattered when both are pressganged into the ROK Army in 1950. The combat scenes are very tightly shot and very graphic in their violence, focusing on soldiers' faces while all hell is breaking loose around them. I recommend seeking this out.

Yup, I got it. It's very good. Brings out the whole horror of civil war, anytime, anywhere.

Well, I saw it and while it was ok, it was also over acted. I don't really like seeing one guy stand up in the middle of a battle field and kill a hundred guys while bullets fly by him. If you want realism in a movie, see Cross of Iron!

Over the top melodrama in Asiatic movies is basically standard fare so you have to expect it......

Didn't find the movie to be very well made. The 'plot' was chaotic at times and the visuals reminded me of an amateur trying to copy the action scenes of 'saving private ryan' to a 'T'.

I went into the movie expecting good things, came out disappointed. If you haven't seen it and haven't found it easy to find, I wouldn't recommend driving across town to rent it, it's not worth it imo.

Ah, the wonders of NetFlix... it makes watching painless, regardless of how disappointing a movie. My son just got an account so we are now getting movies 9 at a time. I even just added "Plan Nine from Outer Space" (haven't seen that turkey in a long, long time).

Despite your reaction, the ratings and reviews on NetFlix were fairly positive on this one, so I'll wait and see how I like it.

When it comes to foreign war movies, if you haven't seen Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, you really should dedicate the time to watch an old, B&W, subtitled, movie. The Magnificent Seven was based on it. There are several Kurosawa war movies, Kagemusha and Ran are about the best.

I liked All Quiet On The Western Front above Iron Cross, the remake with Richard Thomas.
The end always shocks me

Sarge, as I recall, both Truman & Roosevelt--two of the greatest Presidents we ever had--were Democrats.

You wanna get this thread locked? I hope not.

We were talking about a movie, weren't we? MF didn't like it. I did. Yes, I see the melodrama, BUT, the Asiatic view of family is somewhat different than ours in the "civilized" western world. However, the notion of a family being split in a civil war should be very familiar to those of us with ACW veterans in their family tree.

Sarge, did you see the movie we're talking about?

Tae Guk:
Not a bad movie. Very Cliche'. The scenes could have been borrowed from any a dozen of war movies.
Good authenticity of equipment ie soviet bloc weapons. Computer animations were a tad phoney. And the camera at times was so close I felt hemmed in during the many fighting scenes. Lots of action thats for sure. Dubbing not so good. Watch it anyways if you like war movies.
