1. AC Research. I’m not sure I understand this right. The manual says:

“Aircraft not yet available with a production capacity will cause research and may move up the availability of the new aircraft type. Whenever a plane would have been produced, 1 development point is gained by the new aircraft type. For every 100 development points the availability of the aircraft will be moved up by one month.”

Let’s look at a hypothetical situation. On Dec. 7th the Japanese have a 320 factory for N1K1-J Georges. But they’re all damaged and have to be repaired. Let’s perform a miracle and they’re magically all repaired so I have 320 functional George factories doing R&D. If I’m understanding the above passage correctly in 1 month the George factories would have produced 320 George’s had they been available. Since they aren’t available it instead would produce 320 development points which would equal a 3 month earlier availability date.

So I guess the questions are: Do I understand that passage correctly? And does it really work that way? Would it really move the George 3 months closer? A further question would be does the R&D use up heavy industry points and supplies and oil?

That leads me to question subject 2.

2. Repairing factories. Having noticed all those R&D factories Japan has (there are damaged R&D factories for about 20 planes) I decided to see how quickly they repaired so I began a new scen 15 and ran a couple days. Dec 7 had 1 R&D factory (A6M3’s I think). Dec 9 it had only upped to 5 R&D factories. Obviously that’s not many more.

So question number 2 is how does the computer decide if a factory will repair or not? Also, what goes into factory repairs? Does it use up supplies, heavy industry, etc?

Thanks for all the help.

You have to have 10K supplies in a hex before a factory will repair. You can repair max 1 factory level per type per turn. Each one costs 1000 supplies.

Be conservative when you expand factories.

My understanding is that it's not certain that the R&D points invested will accelerate appearance of that model; there's a die roll of some sort. Beyond that, people say that R&D isn't worth it until one gets close to the time at which the aircraft is scheduled to appear -- but if this is true, I don't understand why. I really wish the game gave us more info on whether our R&D has had any success.

I assume so. Be very careful expanding production or repairing factories as Japan. In the first few months of the game, most Japanese players experience supply shortages, or at least stress on their supply system. You might want to search for threads on advice on production; a lot of people recommend halting various research and certain other factories, all to save resources/oil/supply.

Yeah, I can see that you'll have to be cautious, just from Irrelevant's post. I totaled it up and just to repair the dmaged AC factories Japan has on Dec 7 will cost a million and a half supply.
