Last night I watched documentary about Kamikazes on Discovery Channel. They said that during Okinawa campaign crew of the one of the picket destroyers painted large arrow pointing to the aft part of the ship and wrote CARRIER THAT WAY, annoyed with neverending Kamikaze attacks that kept crushing on them, instead of going for carrier task force that was some 20 miles behind them...
Was that true, and if so what was the name of that destroyer?

I think that IF it happened, the commander of that ship would have seen the end of his career REAL FAST.

You are assuming he was actually pointing towards the CV's

Well, crew of those DDs was probably pretty annoyed, 700 Kamikaze sorties flew that day, most of them decided to attack picket destroyers, so I guess that any direction was acceptable, as long as banzai planes went somewhere else

For some reason I seem to recall the ship as the Walke. Can anyone confirm that?

Why would anyone hold it against them? Ok, maybe if the arrows kept zeroing in on the CVs as they changed their relative position in regard with the DD in question... Come on :)
Also, I don't see how a kamikaze would change his mind after reading the message seeing he was 1 milisecond away from the impact.
Sorry, just had to get this out of me...
P.S.
Djodje, if you saw that documentary, you must be REALLY close to Croatia. Speak up soldier!

If it was ever done it was done as a joke, and should be written in English. Written in Kanji it would not be funny.

I don't know about that one. But if you ever make it to Charleston S.C. I highly suggest you go to Patriots Point. They have the Yorktown [Essex obviously] and the USS Laffey DD-724.

The Laffey is known as "the ship that wouldn't die." A Summner class DD, on picket duty off Okinawa on April 16, 1945 she was attacked by 22 kamikazes and dive bombers. Hit by 5 kamikazes and 3 bombs and 2 near miss bombs and lived to tell the tale.

So I could imagine the crews of those picket DD's were allowed all the gallows humor they could muster. My Dad was on a LST off Okinawa and said it was the most frightening experence of his life.

My father was on Shurie Ridge (amongst other places). In all the time before he died, all I ever heard from him about it was once he said "it was hell". That is all he ever said on the subject, and just that one time. Leyte he would talk about sometimes, but never Okinawa.
