Just got my copy last week and it looks like it ought to be great fun. However I have not been able to forge throught the first orders phase (as Allies, Scn 02 vs AI). My system is a bit elderly, a win 98, 700mhz AMD, with 256mB RAM, Diamond Stealth and a recently installed 40gB harddrive system.
The problem I am having is this: I can organize 4-6 TF and then when I attempt to organize another, or check any of the intelligence files, the system locks up. This typically happens when a try to close the current window. The first clue I get is often the sudden cessation of the music. I am at least a month from being able to purchase a current machine and wouold really like to play at least a couple of turns.
On another note, I recall having read in the manual, I think, something about increasing the font size of the various windows but cannot now locate the passage. Any suggestions?
Also is there a way to turn off the opening animations? With my current problem the constant rebooting and then having to wait for the whole opening sequence is really frustrating.

Think you may have trouble with that system but just press 'Return' to skip the opening sequences

Hi and welcome to WITP

Try renaming these two directories:
VIDEO - > noVIDEO
SOUND -> noSOUND

This will stop the opening video sequence from playing, and will stop sounds from being played.

Also try using ESC key to close the Intelligence screens. Several systems seem to have problems using the BACK button,IIRC.

Oh, you might try running the game in windows mode. Create a shortcut to the executable and edit the properties to add a "-w" parameter
eg Target: "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific\War in the Pacific.exe" -w

Michael

Indeed... Welcome to the fray...

As to the trouble, I have to ask... Have you patched up to the latest version thus far? Your older system MAY be giving you issues, but by in large it shouldn't. Be sure you're patched up to 1.4 and if the problem continues at that point? Try running michaelm's suggestions and see what that does.

Good luck!

Thanks gents;
According to the credits, the version I'm running is 1.4 (purchased less than a month ago).
The renamed sound file did the trick, probably related to having an old sound card (the hard drive upgrade is the first hardware change I've performed on this machine). I suspect that it was just overloading that portion of my system. I normally run the computer with the sound off anyway, so it's not a significant loss. Also like running the program as a window.
Now that I've got the game to run (and gotten a pummeling from Japan in the first three days, although I did manage to get most of my naval units out of land based air range) I have another question: is there a zoom feature for the main window map? As I get old and blind it's getting a bit harder to read the map.
WRT win 98: I plan to buy a new machine this year (I've wanted a second computer for quite some time) and intend to get a faster machine with XP and as many bells and whistles as I can manage, but it'll have to wait awhile.

Just be quite sure you have no other 'old' games on 98 that you like to play -- many do not work on XP, even with the emulation settings (thinking of all the old Pacific/Allied/Panzer General games, for instance). Bill lied to us....

Not so much a "lie" as it was he didn't consider all the facts. I have old games that work on XP, and ones that don't. As for the system refresh, there's people with newer systems having troubles too. Just the recipe of computer components can give the game fits sometimes... Thankfully I've had no worries... Glad yours is sorted out though.
