Would it make sense to add Close in Fire Support ships in to the Allied ship inventory? I admit I haven't played into 1945 when the Rocket Ships would become availible so I don't know if the 12 ships of this class are modeled in the database. From what I can tell, there doesn't seem to be "naval fire support" of any kind during the land combat rounds other than the prepartory bombardment task force. I expect that the only real way of modeling these ship type is to put it into a bombardment task force. But the next questiion is really interesting and maybe something I need to test out. What would happen if a Rocket ship capable of firing 125 rockets in a single volley shows up in a surface combat? At the very least you would need to give the Japanese some visibility bonuses.

I have done much research and testing on the use of the invasion support craft and have made my findings know to the powers that be. At the present time adding these rocket-equipped ships to your invasion is only a good idea because it gives the shore guns more targets to shoot at besides the transports. Getting these vessels to noticeably use their rockets and affect the defending troops is extremely rare. I have been told by the powers that be that they are “working as designed.” What this design is and how to see it working is beyond me. They did not have a noticeable effect during the invasion like suppressing the defenders or reducing the number of invasion casualties that the use of their rockets should do. It might have something to do with the short range of their rockets and the ships not getting close enough inshore to use them. The best way to suppress or kill defenders and thus reduce invasion casualties is put a good number of DD and a few CL or CA in your invasion TF. These ships will use their guns during the actual invasion phase and inflict damage to the defender in the form of suppressing the CD guns and even killing some. Lesser number of CD guns shooting back greatly reduces invasion casualties.

To show this, try changing the range of these rockets to an unhistorical long range (the same as a 5” gun perhaps) and run a test in the tutorial. If you give them sufficiently long range they blast the hell out of the target and greatly help your invasion. Then run another test with the default short range and you will notice the difference. Important note, you have to change the range per each ship not just the class or in the weapons data section. That’s how the editor works.

I very much appreciate the insight. Wouldn't have played around with it but 1.5 came out!
