We just started a new game after patching to 1.5. Each of us will have his own thread this time, so I will be able to criticize Tom poor strategy ( mainly when he sinks my Baby KB) and to explain how my losses are planned in advance and leading to my victory.
We kept almost all the rules of the old game, besides the use of night bombing that is now allowed.
We have a "free" turn one with no limits to the allowed moves and attacks and I will use my freedom to attack as many bases as I can early in the game.
My first target is to capture as many resouces and oil producing bases as son as possible.
I'm going also to start building my defensive perimeter in central and south Pacific.
Planes
I'm increasing A6M2 production. It will be the bulk of the elite navy groups for some time. I will keep the Nell gruops as long as I have replacements, then switch them to Betties.
I'm increasing also Oscar production, till when Tojos and Tonies will be available.
I switched Lillies and Sallies production to Helen.
I also sligtly increased armaments and tanks production and accelerated some ships building.

You do realise that the custom upgrade option is locked in PBEM?

So why shoot yourself into the leg and leave most of your IJA bomber groups without replacements?

And to reinterate on Blackwatch's behalf: they restarted (and presumably set the falg for aircraft upgrades.) So as long as you have 36 a/c in the pool, new Daitai can come into play as their original a/c and then convert to Helens.

Unless you are playing a mod then the Sally and Helen are almost identical. The only difference IIRC is that the helen has an additional gun somewhere..

Some hit scored against the ship leaving PI and DEI, but not many sighted. I think that Tom is moving part of the ship from PI east towards Pearl. I moved some Vals, Mavis and Kates to Saipan and Bonin to close this door.
I'm also moving the BBs based in Japan to Brunei, could be useful for some bombing.
Planes from DEI and Singapore are scoring some hit on my ship, but they are not a big problem so far.
Makin captured on 12 9.

On 12 10 Tom launched a major counterattack that repulsed my troops from Changsha with heavy losses on both sides.
Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 102785 troops, 690 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 73744 troops, 786 guns, 141 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 5 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
1305 casualties reported
Guns lost 49
Vehicles lost 2

Allied ground losses:
3552 casualties reported
Guns lost 91

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

On 12 12 a CV TF surprised my ships unloading at Tarawa, but, lucky me, failed to hit the transports sinking one CL and five DDs.
On the same day Rabaul was captured.

A series of naval battles has been taking place near Balikpapan for two days, but I will describe it in a separate post.

My troops in Songkhia are reorganized and are moving to Alor Star. In Luzon I'm quite ready to move also.
Kendari and Tarakan are operative air bases and I'm moving Base force units to Rabaul area.

12 13 Troops landing at Samarinda and Amboina. Reinforcements landing at Kuching.
Several air attacks against transport TFs. The CVs near Tarawa are pounding again my ships. KB is heading that way. Air units from Tarakan managed to hit DD Evertsen and CL Dragon.
A PT group intercepted my CLs TF and placed a torpedo hit on Chiyoda.
12 14 Troops landing in Macassar. Tom CVs are still attacking my transport, hope they will stay there a little longer.
A DDs TF wiped out the PTs that attacked my CLs on previous turn.
The Kongo TF bombed Batavia trying to reduce the Dutch planes danger, but din't destroy any. Several transports damaged in Batavia port instead.
Samarinda captured. My troops reaced Alor Star and strated the siege.
12 15 Second bombardement of Batavia. Just a handful of planes destroyed. CLs Marblehead and De Ruyter hit by Takan planes.
CVE Hosho hit by one bomb. Not too big damage. Macassar, Amboina and Kuching captured. First attack against Alor Star, forts reduced one level.

The total losses of the four days battles are:

Tom is acting very aggressive in the opening moves, let's see if this will be the right choice.

Landing troops at Singkawang.
Palembang and Balikpapan captured. Now I control some oil and resources production. Palembang is partially damaged, but still producing, I think that it will be possible to repair it in a reasonable time.

The Army of Malaya performed very well, even above my expectations for the period. As showed in the map below only Johore Baru and Singapore are in British control.
The retreat to Georgetown of 30000 troops that were eventually compelled to surrender was a big help for the advancing Japanese army.
The forces in the area are now:
four divisions
two brigades
four enginers regiments
two tank regiments
several artillery units
base forces, construction battalions and aviation support and command units are based in Alor Star and Kuantan.

I realistically hope to close this campaign early in January and to be able to send more combat units to join Burma Army.

I have in control of the targets scheduled for December. Tarakan, Balikpapan, Brunei and Miri, the four bases producing oil and resources are working for the Japanese Empire. Only Miri is lightly damaged: three oil points out of one hundred need to be repaired.
Toboina is also at full level. Palembang is (394)x506 resources and (478)x222 oil. Kendari is (255)x345. Amboina has 5 oil damage.
I have one base in Java, Kragen, that is at the middle of the island and allows me to go first for Soerabaja or Batavia. My forces in this area are refitting in Palembang and Balikpapan. Anyway I need to wait for troops from Malaya or Luzon for the conquest of Java.

I only landed in Luzon, because I don't think that the other islands are a priority target. At this time I control San Marcelino, Lingayen, Vigan and Tuguegarao.
I was repulsed twice from Clark with two divisions resulting disrupted and tired. My main army is now preparing for the attack in Lingayen. I have here four divisions, two tank regiments, two enginers regiments, the 14th Army HQ and artillery units.
One division and one brigade are moving north from Tuguegarao to capture Aparri and Laong.
The last division is in San Marcelino.
Now I control three bases producing supplies in the island, but I still have to take more by sea.
I expect to haveto fight for two more months to end this campaign.

I have troops in Rabaul, Lae, Buna, Gili and Lunga.
Rabaul is growing fast both as port and airfield. I'm working to take enough supplies to the area, then I will go for PM.
PM is closed as airbase and I will keep it closed.

China is the usual slaughter. The main actions now are around the Ichang area and at the crossroad NW of Kaifeng.
At the crossroad my bombardment attacks are resulting in 300 losses average for the Chinese.
I'm trying to destroy the Chinese army east of Ichang, but still it has several escape routes.

I'm giving special care to planes production and operations, since it was a plane problem that forced to restart this game.

Production
I increased A6M2s, Oscars and Helens production. I'm producing 230 A6M2s, 170 Oscars and 120 Helens.
I increased the production for Betties, Vals, Tinas, Tabbies and Dinahs.
All the CV based groups are flying Zeroes now and I upgrade also a couple of land based groups from Claudes. Three groups upgraded from Nates to Oscars.
All the Lillies groups upgraded to Sallies and one Sallies group upgraded to Helens.

Operations

I inflicted more losses than I received. I lost more bombers then fighters, but I produced enough to replace the lost planes and to add more to the pool.
The total air losses ratio is 659 Allied vs 340 Japanese. I would be happy to keep this ratio level for some months.

Here below is the intelligence summary for Dec 31. I'm quite satisfied of the situation. I gained most of the objectives set for this first month.
The air losses ratio is good, as the total score.
The only negative point is the one about ship losses. Tom aggressive tactics made me pay a cost in ships.
My LCUs are in good shape everywhere and ready to move for new conquests.
KB is preparing some action and maybe the ship losses balance will change a little.
My goals for January are:
end of Malaya campaign.
end of Luzon campaign
start the capture of Java
capture of Sumatra
start on the invasion of PM if possible

I have only one CVL, one BB and one CA needing repairs so far.
The CVL and the CA are in homeland ports and being repaired, while the BB is heading for a port.
