New Air Group Option - 5/3/2005 6:21:06 PM

I really like all the changes in 1.5. However in spite of all the yipping and yapping, I really only have one design request. It would be nice if there was one more option for Air Groups. Sometimes I would like to dissolve the air group, simply put, I would like the aircraft to go BACK into the pool and the pilots get placed in other Air Groups or back in the pool. Sometimes I just don't have enough planes to upgrade a squadren, and sometimes I need pilots in other types of Air Groups. This is especcially important playing as Japanese when the Navy pilot pool gets low... It would be nice to Dissolve Air Groups.

What do you guys think?

It's called the disband option.

When it asks you if you want to reform the group, choose "no".

(you do have to have another airgroup with the same plane, though"

That, and, your pilots have to go to the same aircraft type. the whole point was to be able to redistribute pilots to other aircraft types in the same branch. For example, disolving a transport group and making those pilots available for a bombing squadren badly in need of replacement pilots.

Yeah, I noticed after I posted that I didn't really answer your question.

But, I believe that this option will never be available. Pilots going into the pool to go to a different type of aircraft just isn't too historical. Sure, some mid to late war US bomber pilots retrained to become fighter pilots, but I'm not sure this was common practice throughout the world's airforces.

The reasoning a pure disband option was never implemented is quite simple. It would require that the group be moved back to a legitimate location for this and serious code work on how the pool operates.

Due to code mechanics, Pilots can not be put back into the pool as they are generated only when being taken out of the pool. There is no storage capability inside the pool to handle them.

The same kind of logic applies to the aircraft themselves. You can't just have an aircraft sitting at some front line base and decide the turn before the unit is destroyed that you want to disband it into thin air so the planes are not destroyed.

The path chosen to keep things honest was allowing groups to be disbanded into other groups (pilots and planes stay put).

the planes would be destroyed, justthe units would be saved under certain criteria.. I do understand the code issues, just on the wish list for witp2

No storage capacity for pilots? But then, how do pilots that were MIA or withdrawn after many missions come back into the game?

They are moved to the group, not zapped and put back in the pool. MIA pilots still exist completely, they are not in the pool. The pool is simply a number, there is no detail information of the pilots there, they are randomly created based on country details.

There you go again Frag, making complete sense. If we allowed a free disband everyone would be complaing about the teleporting pilots and planes from one end of the map to the other.

true, but, in a future realease you could make it so that totally disbanding a unit could only happen at a primary homebase... But being a programmer myself I understand avoiding things that require fundamental rewrites....

Thanks for the input though...

Understood, but what makes a primary airbase? Invent the rule, think it through end to end and also factor the AI into it. Nothing wrong with the suggestion, just carry it through all the way.

Well, Ships can have a primary base, like osaka. And the only place you can upgrade ships to a new type (ie the jap AK 7000 capacity ) is Osaka. You could probably implement something similar with an Airgroup where the only time the Dissolve option is available is when you are at , say, Tokyo...

Of course it's easy to say, and another thing to code... but it might be a cool idea should the desperate shortage become an issue for some players who have some bad luck with their naval air groups...

Also, in the short run, you caould make it so that the pilots go back into "The Pool", by simply adding that number to the pool number. You would lose their experience, but that would be the trade off for potentially switching air craft types... It's just a thought. Again I am a programmer myself so I understand that these things are easy to say, hard to do...

And with that, I'm back to programming...

I beg to differ! Japan had plenty of bomber, transport and recon pilots that requalified to fly other aircraft.....at least for that one trip.....

As in UTTER sense or UTTER non-sense? Any way, since the planes could only be dissolved at Tokyo (assuming Jap example), you could keep the planes too, just throw them back into the pool. Of course that brings up the issue, what if the allies are bombing Tokyo? Maybe the number of aircraft in the pool should go down if the factories making them are bombed? Anyway, maybe I should have put this into the wish list instead....
