i was one year in the austrian army (yep, there is one) trained on gustav (swedish product of the late 60's), an at-launcher. very funny, but impossible to hit a moving tank over 400-500 mtr and impossible to destroy something withj bigger armor than a bmp-1.
(= very useful;) ).

Asked my dad in 66' what branch of the military he'd join. "Well, you can live in a foxhole and eat cold K-rations, or get a clean rack and three square meals a day." Dad didn't raise no dummies...USN 26 years.
Spent almost 17 of em' at sea. E-1 to 0-5. Not bad for a kid from Iowa. Ship driver...mostly "Tincans." Survived Nam & Desert Storm One.
Now teaching World History at High School level. Kid's don't bother me a b-b-b-b-bit! LOL
Bring back the draft...are you nut's! If brains was gas, today's kid's wouldn't have enough to drive a piss ants motorcycle around a Cheerio!

On the year 1954 I served as enginer. Good to have had hands-on training with the material one uses in SPWAW on Eastern Front nineteenfourties. Finnish Army did not have "modern" wapons on that time.

Many of the officers had real war experience.

Was in the US Air Force at end of Viet Nam War. Was an Electronics Warfare Systems Specialist. Worked on Electronic Counter Measures on B-52D's and F-105D's and G's. The 105's were called Wild Weasels and went after Sam sights (Surface to Air Missiles).

Just viewed through all the posts and my heart jumped. There are *real* combat vets among us. Well, that shows how great is the game we are playing.

I have done military service, I am trained to be Anti-Tank trooper with Apilas rocket. My rank is Jääkäri, that is private in the Army of Finland.

Translating the Finnish miltitary ranks should go, according to me, like this.

Jääkäri = Private
Korpraali = Corporal
Alikersantti = 'Subsergeant'
Kersantti = Sergeant.

The rank Alikersantti does not properly translate. It is a rank between Corporal and Sergeant, being really neither. A guy who is a alikersantti is usually a squad leader. Sometimes they may be even assistant platoon leaders. Only distinguished squad leaders become sergeants in the Finnish army and they must be officially promoted.

I just want to say that military ranks are not equally comprehended in all armies of the world. I'm not sure, but Japannese army has even older and younger privates of different grades.

Distinguished company indeed.

Well, for my part, I faked insanity to get out of military service

This was in South Africa before apartheid ended and I had no desire to shoot people in the townships or go into Angola. However, I lacked the courage to be a conscientious objector

Checking that out...

http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Japanese-military-ranks

No, I really mean different. Russian ranks are much like other Europeans. Japannese have:

Heicho
Jotohei
Ittohei
Nitohei

These are all privates and lower than corporal Gocho and sergeant Gunso. Ranks seem to reflect Japannese society which has high hierarchical system with honorific speech and even separate language for men and women. Japannese are so much different culture from us westerners.

There must be some Japannese gamers to explain that term. Perhaps privates advance with age. Just remembered 'Cannonball Run II' with Dom Deluise as a private with 20 years in service. He had appropriate insignia markings in his uniform.

Like 'superior private' I don't have even idea what's the difference between US Private and Private 1st Class.

I've just saw today your question about Military Service ...
I was in the Spanish Navy in 1.987 (I'm 41 now) when it wasn't voluntary. For a month I received the basic training in El Ferrol, the main naval base in north Spain. After this, I spent the rest of the eleven month as "librarian" (please no jokes, it was real) at the Main Military Court in Madrid because I've studied Laws ...
Four years ago MS ¡n Spain becomes professional.

I spent 9 years in the U.S. Army, all on Ft. Bragg in an airborne unit with just over 100 jumps and seven years in the reserves. I was in both Gulf Wars, returned from Iraq in January of 2004 where I served as company 1st Sergeant.

I've let myself to believe that korpraali could be translated as private 1st class and alikersantti would be simply corporal. But like you said:

This is so true, that we just have to accept any translations as rough estimates

I don't know. I've been tenacious with my generic word 'subsergeant' because I don't want to call 'sergeant' a corporal. PFC is, I believe, a term for all soldiers fit for duty and it is lower than Finnish rank 'Corporal'.

Much more of concern are the German 'Sergeants', because it is un-germanic to use that rank to present Unteroffizier or Feldwebel. It is always annoying to me to speak of German Sergeants.

Maybe your generic 'subsergeant' for alikersantti could still be corporal and our korpraali is actually lance corporal ?

Geez, these comparative ranks are difficult.

Just popped into my mind, Puukkoo, maybe we should settle for those ranks that are used by our own army? Finnish Ranks

If we take this table, then korpraali would actually be lance corporal and alikersantti would be corporal

Oh, and by the way, in order to stay on topic: I've also done military service, in finnish navy. My rank is Seaman
