Tonight thhe 100 greatets war films was shown on Channel 4 UK.

One of the films was Russian set in WW2. It looked fantastic. It follows a young Russian boy soldier on the run from the German SS I presume the Einsatzgruppe.

Im going to buy the DVD ASAP.

I'm sold although the reviews I just googled indicate it will be quite a disturbing ride. I used to be able to handle these things better when I was a bit younger.

Did they sort the top 100 in any order? What was their favorite?

I have the DVD of Come and See and I have to say I was very very disappointed in the film. I think Downfall was much better.

Hmmm... I find a list that excludes Hamburger Hill and includes Rambo: First Blood 2 very hard to take seriously!

Herston,

SO far they are upto to 50 and I have to say there have been plenty of foriegn and old black and white films that Ive never heard of.

Some great films mentioned so far. I havent seen Rambo come up though.

The clips of Come and See looked very good indeed but if its not that good then I shan't bother.

I was looking at that link c00k1e gave to the Channel 4 website. BTW, no "We Were Soldiers", but "Escape to Victory" (absolutely dire PoW/soccer flick) is in.

And no "Battleground" ?!! Does whoever picked those actually WATCH war movies?

Hertson,

The website just lists the movies you could nominate. NOT the movies in the list. Many will not have made it.

A cople of important ones are missing but I can assure you that Rambo 2 will not be in the top 100.

The Netflix.com reviews were mostly excellent for the movie - overall it's rated at 4 1/2 stars which is really good for their rating system. I slapped it into my queue at #20 or so so I'll have it in a couple of weeks.

I just watched "Brotherhood of War" yesterday after getting recommendations from this forum. I was quite impressed with it. I hope my luck holds with "Come and See"

Man, I don't know about that poll. They posted it at The Wargamer. Rambo 2 does indeed squeek in at #100.
Love and Death is a War Film? Patton #44? Paths of Glory #23? I would have figured those 2 in the top 10 but to each his own.......

I agree that some of the films posistions were way off. Hoever we need to remember that anyone could vote so this wasnt just a vote by us wargaming grogs:)

Some good films there though.

I mean Regeneration was well down on the list..................Von Ryans Express was above it...........hmmm

No Mans Land looked a good film aswel as Battle for Algiers. Im going to get those on DVD aswell. Oh yes Ive never seen Paths of Glory but always wanted too so that being bought aswell.

Great flick.

Nice to see Kelly's Heroes in there. Telly Savalas is too funny in that movie. Great stuff.

I actually bookmarked that poll because there are so many films listed there that I have not seen. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit watching movies....

Hey, does anyone have a link to this list ?

I agree with ... that RAmbo 2 is difficult to be taken seriously, albeit it could make a good SEGA play (shoot them up style ...) Rambo 3 is even worse (try to watch it lately - too much asked).

one of my favourite war movies is 'Die Brücke" and another one is 'l'armée des ombres'. both black and white - did anyone see those ? is it on the list ?

Leon

I saw Come and See a couple weeks ago courtesy of the NYPL. It's interesting as a piece of Soviet filmaking, but don't think you'll get grand battle scenes or an exciting storyline. I liked it at the time I guess, but now I can't really remember many specifics.

Thanks.

Well i agree with most of it, but hey, not a lot of non english movies.
What about the 2 i named + Austerlitz, 'la vie et rien d'autre', 'la chambre des officiers' etc.

BTW, did anyone hear of 'un long dimanche de fiançailles' ? Excellent movie, from last year i'd say. about story of a paraplegic french girl looking for her fiancé, supposedly condemned to death for cowardice and left in the no man's land between french and german lines in 1917 after (or during) the great mutinies.
