The first carrier battle, February 9th, 1942...

Mogami's comments: "well the part where I draw you into a fight worked but the results were less then I hoped for.
One of your scouts hit hiryu in the morning when I was covered by clouds (thats alright since scouting is not offensive) Then your CV pummeled one of my transport TF.
In afternoon we had a exchange between CV. Yorktown was sunk but 4 IJN CV were hit. (A Midway in Feb unless they can get back to port) So now it is 2 IJN CV versus 2 USN CV but the USN CV suffered heavy loss to airgroups. IJN airgroups remain relatively intact. I had planned on splitting my CV into multiple TF but had not done so. It cost me today. Have to see what happens tomorrow."

The "unfiltered" Mogami: "Well Soryu sank during the day. The airgroups were saved (no secret you could gather that from aircraft loss report on intell screen, Aircraft on CV that sink are reported destroyed on field. AC that crash when no CV or airfield to land on are reported as Op loss)
Orphan CV groups are really only good for use as replacement groups for other CV since you can't disband them. When a CV suffers loss and you need to train those groups Orphan groups take their place so as long as the CV is not damaged it can put back to sea without waiting 6 months for groups to train. They are also good for one shot defense of Atolls. (any planes that survive the first day transfer out and the group rebuilds)
Good job on your battle. I think it is a repeat of our first UV encounter. Instead of my getting a CV hit by LBA your scout did the damage. It's not over yet. I think many ships will have near Port Moresby or Gili Gili or other locations in area as "where lost""

Congrats, Erik on winning an early CV battle. I take it you lost Yorktown and maybe Chicago? You sank Soryu, tons of loaded transports and damaged 3 or 4 other CV's? (you don't have to confirm my guesses, if it's too early to give specifics to the enemy)

I'd call that a win, even though you probably came out with more points lost (more planes, larger CV and 1 CA isn't worth 1 smaller CV and assorted merchies), you definitely score some intangible points for strategic success.

Thanks, I can confirm that Yorktown went down with just about all hands, she took quite a pummeling. The USN pilots definitely got an education tangling with those Japanese in February of 1942. I think a few breaks went my way with the weather and my search/strike rolls, it's not that often that the US can win or break even on an early CV exchange. Knowing the risks and odds though, I decided it was worth it to try to slow Mogami down, his pace up until the battle was starting to worry me. I fully expected to lose 2-3 carriers and was very happy to get away with losing only Yorktown.

Because of my relatively weak AA at this time and the severe losses to my fighter squadrons (and the clear quality advantage of the Japanese squadrons, despite the end result), I decided not to stick around and attempt to finish off the wounded Japanese carriers since I felt the strategic goal had been accomplished at very little cost.

I think Mogami would call it a win for me too, though I think the points at present are a wash. The most important thing was to force him to delay some plans, even if only for a few weeks or a couple of months and I think I accomplished that.

Regards,

- Erik

For those interested, here is the replay file that includes the carrier battle (hopefully it will match the combat report for you all, I have my game settings matching Mogami's precisely and the replay worked fine).

Hiryu Sinks! Mogami's comments: "Hiryu sank during the night. Shortlands was unable to correct the flooding. She pulled in with 76 2 days ago. Yesterday it was 79 I sent all the damaged ships out except for her. Japan only has 1 AR at start of war and I had not sent it to Shortlands. (Davao)
I think that clears up the question of who won the battle.
Even worse she took most of her Torpedo group down with her since I could not off load it (Shortlands airfield has not yet reached level 1) So 19 first rate pilots were lost. Boo Hoo"

That's about as close to a "Midway" as I've ever seen in this game. Especially so early in 42. It'll be interesting to see if this slows down Mog.

Interestingly enough, we had a similar, though not identical, carrier exchange back in our UV days. The big question for me now is how badly were the other carriers damaged? I'm pretty sure one other carrier was severely damaged and it's likely that two more sustained minor to moderate damage (which may be moderate to serious by the time they got it under control). Of course, given fog of war, there may be just one lightly damaged carrier besides the two that sank, for all I know.

Regards,

- Erik
