The landings proceed smoothly. Brunei and the entire north eastern coast of Borneo fell today. Not a single oil plant damaged. That's a lucky hit!
Wake fell after some strong naval bombardments...another goodnews for Yamamoto.
no signs of his CVs...just a small TF ( 1 CA and some DDs ) heading southwards towards Palmyra. I decided to let it go, cause i need my KB in Palau area ASAP.
Strangly i lost completely contact both with Z force ( who left Singapore) and the Philippinian fleet. The fall of Jolo and the trasfert of 70bombers and 20 zero should deal at least with the latter.
The Oz invasion force is getting ready 2 hexes north of Palau. It will sail southwards as soon as Ambonia falls ( tomorrow maybe).
At Songhya and Kuantan tomorrow i'm gonna attack in order to begin asap the conquest of the Malayan peninsula.

Airfields estabilished and ready at Jolo,Legaspi,Aparri,Songhya,Bankok,Tavoy. All already filled up with zeros,Mavis and Nells

The blitz has begun!

Just a little comment after a good sleep...

It seems that his general strategy did not change since last time we played. He's pulling out everything he can from DEI and PI. If i'm not wrong he will divert all his planes to Burma and India, 'cause he loves to start a early bombing campaign of Burma and Indochina. If he doesn't change his mind, he's going to use his subs to evacuate most of his troops, especially base forces and american fragment units from PI and Singa. these conditions should give me a bit advantage at the forst stages of this war: gotta use a fast pace for Malaya, Sumatra and Java, in order to finish the DEI-SRA campaign asap and then go for Northern Burma-India.
Last time he's been quite aggressive at the beginning with his surface naval assets, engaging my ships especially in Ambonia and Rabaul. Gotta pay attention to this point

The S.S.D. is close to truk. As soon as it reaches the meeting point with the other units, it will sail southwards: direction RAbaul!
Tarawa ,Baker,Apanama and Makin will be occupied in the next week, but at the moment this is a secondary front.

PH has not been succesfull, as always. Every time i start a new game i tell to myself that it's a waste of time, pilot and resources.....

this evening i'll post some screenshots

Kotha Baru fell today. the AF is heavily damaged and it will take some days to make it operative again.
The air battle for Rangoon has started. 2 zero daitai and 2 sally daitais to begin with.
In the PI he created thousands of TF with one single ship ,in order to puzzle my air forces and disperse my air power. From Jolo and Legaspi many air missions today. Few transport sunk and some others hit. Have to be patient here...i just know that i cannot have them all.
the 15th Army has begun his drive towards Rangoon. Some base forces are moving towards Reaghen in order to create some advanced support air bases.
Some fruitless allied attacks at my convoys in Northern Borneo without any succes
KB is heading towards Truk.
The Oz invasion force is still assembling in the waters of Palau

Few more details...

Now that the 35th bde has taken Ambonia( where a Base force is already unloading), this experienced unit will be redirected towards Menado, in order to close that tedious allied Eye on my flank. After menado it will unload at Davao from where to launch the final assault for the conquest of Mindanao. as soon as Davao falls the operation for Tarakan will begin.

The Z force and the other allied naval assets in DEI have been moved towards Java. Now we have to discover if he wants to stand and fight for Java with his ships or he prefers to leave the area. If he will evacuate towards Oz and Darwin...he's gonna have some bad surprises soon..., while if he choses to go for India passing trough the straight between sumatra and Java there's nothing i can do to stop him. I really do not care much. My goal now is to get strategic positions asap rather than sinking ships. With Northern Oz in my hands it will be a pain for him to recapture Java from the southern way....i'm quite sure his attention will be polarized in Burma for the next 6 months.
The other question is PM and New Guinea. With the tuning of air bombing in v.1,5 i'm still not sure if PM af, once captured, can be mantained operative ...with 1.4 not at all!

I would try to stop him if I were you, or at least cause some casualties. The more Allied equipment lost in the early war the longer it takes for the counter attack to get organized.

It is true that India is a comparatively difficult place to attack out of, so that may be the best place for his troops to go, but Davy Jones Locker* is impossible to attack out of.

Of course you may not be able to interfere with the escape route past Batavia, but if you can it creates some benefits.

Thanks for comments Tom

Well, Kunching ( sp?) on the north-west of Borneo is going to be conquered in the next 2 days i hope. From there i will be able to attack with my betties the Batavia area, from where he can go for India and Bengal Bay with his ships. I'm quite sure Force Z has already passed by and now is saling in the middle of the Indian ocean where i cannot get her.
In our last match i sunk in 8 months of war something like 400 allied vessels, but he clearly admmitted that his ability to reinforce Oz and the other forward bases with fuel and supplies hasn't decrease ....so i doubt that the transport should be a real target for the japs. If i have the chance of sinking some allied warships, be sure i'll go for it, but i won't scrumble that much my plans for some AKs and Msws....not at this stage however

Thanks for reading

The Japanese advance is slow, too slow.
The signs of what seems to be a massive allied air-campaign in China has started. He moved many many planes there....gotta place some zeros there.

I hope we can open the Oz front asap....that one should unbalance his defences

Tomorrow we'll start to advance southwards in Malaya.

HK fell today and Tarawa too.

A bad day for the Army of Mikado.
The KB replenish TF was sailing towards Truk, few hexes south of Midway, quite far from the KB which was 13 hexes south. The allied bombers took of from their carrier and smashed through my undifended Tankers.....a massacre!. Now the KB will try to intercept those carriers, but i'm quite sure he won't be silly enough to stay more days in those waters.....

the 35th bde is being loading on transports. Now that Ambonia is in our hands ( but the AF is not operative yet) the unit can go for its primary objective: Mindanao island

The 15th Army is moving fast towards Mouleim in Burma , chasing down an allied base force. We already have the air superiority over Rangoon , which has been hit hard in the last days.
in China the AVG and many allied bombing squadrons, evacuated from PI and Malaya are making my life difficult. A Zero Daitai has been moved there from Takao. It will try to intercept some allied raids

The SS.D. is sailing towards Rabaul...is going to be hard 'cause i do not have any Naval support for this operation...let's hope he won't bring his cruisers here....

The Invasion of Kuching ( sp?), north west of Borneo has started.

the great Armada is still assembling next to Palau.

A lot of operational losses in these days. Many Nells lost....not a good start indeed

Well.....the war seems begun under a bad star for Japan.

The Allied CVs were spotted...under a cloudy umbrella....while on the KB the sun was shining....result? Not a single strike!
In the afternoon....the clouds were above us...so no strike neither
Now we have to see if we can catch them...where will they go? Hope Nagumo will react this time

In Burma....the AVG prooved its efficiency...3 zeros shot down and 2 destroyed on the ground....what a bad day

The Malaya and Burma campaigns proceed quite smooth

Getting impatient for the Oz adventure

Waiting for the turn to come in....

I'm still really doubtfull weather to send my KB to support Oz invasion or not. Sure i'll need some carriers ther, but i'm quite worried that if i leave the pacific empty the allies will smash through it with their carriers.....
Probably i'll send 2 CVE to join the KB, while i'll move 2 CV from the KB to the baby KB who will support the future operations in northern Oz and Timor.Gotta be carefull with timing BTW....first of all my KB has to cover the Rabaul Invasion........ok, gotta admit that i'm a bit puzzeld! It's always difficult to plan as Japan at the first stages of war..

I'm defenetly making some mistakes, but do not know what...it's depressing!

Sure this time i won't get those shining victories i had in our last match. MC has well understood my way of playing and now he's facing me with my own weapons! He's not risking at all his naval or air assets in DEI or SRA, while raiding with his CVs in the pacific.
It's clear that under these conditions the push for Oz will be paid in terms of expansions in the pacific. I really think i'll go no further than Tarawa, leaving Canton and Baker to him...i know this means that i'll have soon to face some heavy bombers over Tarawa, but really have to decide where to concentrate.
If thngs will go fine in Oz and Malaya i'll have then to decide what to do with PM and NG. I'm quite sure, after the debacle he suffered last time, he won't overcommit at PM this time....so probably 4 divisions will be enough for PM....but then again...there's Java and Sumatra to take...and Burma...and India....oh man! there are so many strategic objs that is so hard to take a decision! For the moment i remain still with my original plans. We'll see in the one month how the overall situation will look like and we'll make some more plans. I want to be as much flexible as possible

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/14/41

Nothing much to report today. The usual "training" activity of the allied fighters over China and Burma, while 50 P-40 of the AVG
, taking off from Mandalay tried to sweep Reaghen looking for my zeros....luckly my guys had already been evacuated towards Saigon. It will be tough the air fight in Burma....
Cagayan at Mindanao has been conquered. Now only Davao is missing. Few air units are already on their way in order to estabilish some air bases there.
What else? bah....some bombing missions of my bombers in Malaya,China and Southern Borneo. The 35th Bde is ready to be unloaded at Menado...gotta get that base 'cause from there his catalinas are watching my movements towads darwin.
Tomorrow we'll attack Georgetown and we'll bypass Kuantan and his garrison moving on the railway towards Singapore. He already started to evacuate by subs his units there....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/15/41

The first big offensive in China has begun. As you can see in the map the two main efforts will be made in the centre and in the north, supported by 2 limited operations against Changsha and Wuchow, just to pinn there the more chinese units i can
The first two main objs are Sian and Ichang. If these two operations will be effective we'll march towards Chungking.

The Landings at Menado started today. Quite bloody indeed without a decent naval support, but we still can handle it
Tarakan is next. Tomorrow will be bombed by a TF composed by 2 BBs and some more cruisers.4 SNLF units will be ready soon to invade this base, supported by the bombers based at Jolo and maybe by the 35th bde if needed.
The KB is taking too long to come back from nowhere.....i need it now!:-) The Rabaul invasion will be supported by 4 CAs,7DDs and 2 BBs...no CV available
In Malaya a Mix Bde is loading up at Saigon:destination Mersing

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/16/41

Today Georgetown fell in japanese hands, while the main army is one hex from Kota Barhu.
in China tomorrow there will be the first real combat...it's important to crash the chinese lines
at the first attempt so that the way for Sian can be opened quite fast.
the 15th army reached Mouleim, even if the 33rd Div hasn't arrived yet. We'll fight ther tomorrow with 1 eng rgt, th 55th division and a mix regiment...
if it won't rain 60 bombers will give close air support from Bankok.
I spotted a quite big american convoy, directed towards Canton Island...i know he'll reinforce that position, but i do not want to let my KB wander any loger so far from the main battlesite
He clearly spotted my TFs moving towards Ambonia...i think he can imagine i want darwin...so i must be ready for a severe fight there.
Tomorrow we'll assault Menado and in one week Tarakan.

Banzai!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/17/41

A strange combat result in China...my divisions were repulsed by a couple of chinese units....a bad beginning:-(
The AVG showed up again...my Tojos managed to shoot down 3 of them, in exchange of a couple of bombers.
The recon says that the allies are leaving Rangoon...the final fight for Burma will so be fought at Mandalay. Good!
Today Menado fell and so Mouleim did. The final countdown for Singapore has started.Hope to end this campaign by the end of Jannuary. Next week we'll attack Darwin....let's hope and cross our fingers!

Interesting stuff Hoepner!
I've finally found time to read your new AAR!

Northern Oz is a good idea: This will make it impossible to reinforce Java with new ac etc. AND it will make it
very difficult to move Allied ships from the East and down into the Pacific. In my Allied game I sent hundreds of transports from
Karachi with supply and fuel.

I actually managed to force my opponent to use 4 Jap divisions in Palembang! I only had 10k troops based around an Oz Bde - and they fought
REALLY well

Just be careful so you don't try to do too much at once...
Even a small Hangover takes a lot of effort and resources - and it can very easily turn into a drain.
Not taking Ceylon/Colombo turned into a headache for me. It is an important target because when you can take this place you turn the Bay of Bengal into the Bay of New Japan and prevents an excellent base for your Betties.

The really big problem about all this is that your opponent will turn Madras, Hyderabad etc into a huge air base and bomb the guts out of your closest bases.
It's better than being bombed back into the stone age in Burma, but is it worth it? My experience against heavy Allied bombing raids is that they can be checked.
40 good exp fighters is all that is needed until enemy long range fighters starts to appear.

Well, good luck to you! Will be interesting to see how it all comes down

Thanks PzB. The mini Hangover is , in fact, still to be decided. It will depends on how things will go in Northern Oz and Burma....so, for the moment i cannot really decide what to do.Now i'll wait untill Rabaul is captured, then i'll launch the Darwin operation. Without Northern Oz it will be difficult for him both to recapture Java and to reinforce NG and Port Moresby...let's hope for the best

Thanks for reading

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/21/41

Ok, one big mistake!:-( I forgot to change the orders for the 1st paras bn....a fragment has been dropped over akyab, while the rest of the unit has moved away from Bankok:-( so now i cannot even send any help to those poor guys at Akyab...and they are the parental fragment...so i will lose the entire unit:-( I'm so idiot!
Homan fell today. The chinese have abbandoned Yenen...very good! Those industries are intact:-) Now he's massing his units at Sian...but my mongolian divisions are already marching towards Langchow in order to flank his positions at Sian.
At Ichang he's sending many units....very good...now i just have to encircle them and create the typical envelope!
First landings at Rabaul...the KB is comming to support 'cause i fear his CVs...but my CVs are short on fuel..let's hope i won't mess it
Some more bombardments at Tarakan in the next days....want to disable as much eng as i can in order to get the resources as intact as possible
At Burma i'm very close to Rangoon...Mouleim AF is already operative. He will surely reinforce Akyab and Mandalay
In few days i'll be sieging Kota Baru.....and then Singapore will be next

Personally i don't know why so many people are concerned about Burma beeing bombed by Allies.

Resources there are few. The resources spent defending Burma (or the resources spent to conquer and hold easter india) in terms of aircraft lost are far more than the resources you can gain from burma.
Burma was conquered by Japs expecially to create a buffer between UK bombers and Malaya/bankok. In the game this means conquering burma, develope all airfields to lvl 4 (so allies can't close down all airfields at same time) and then let allied bombers bomb resources and airfields. who cares.

it will be interesting to see how the small hangover will work out though.

Conquering North of Australia will be good btw, expecially with Andrews's map.

Interesting AAR Gen.Hoepner. I have a question - in your opinion, is it easier for the Japanese to advance in China using this map, compared to the official map?

Well, Andrew, it depends i think. In this AWESOME map if the chinese player reacts more aggressively i think he has more chances than in the vanilla one. In another pbem i'm playin with your map as allies, i'm defending china very well...
I saw a problem with the port at Canton...it does not recognize it as a costal hex......did u know that?

Well, today we conquered Yenen and, above all Akyab! The Emperor's Paras have done a great job!! Now i'm planning to use more of these units to scrumble his defensive lines in Burma. He will make a stand at Lashio and Mandalay for what i can see....

There was a problem with Canton, but it was fixed in the latest version of the map (3b). Are you using the latest version?

Also, regarding China, there are going to be some changes to China in a further revision to the map. I expect that some of the transport links in the North of China will be downgraded. Also, I discovered that the new Chinese bases that have been added did not have proper fort levels set. That will be fixed in the next set of scenario updates.

BTW, now Rabaul is about to fall, Tarakan too, Rangoon is close to be conquered and in the next week our armies will approach Sian.
Not a bad beginning, considering that the operation for northern Oz has been already launched.
The only question is: where are the allied CVs? If they come in at Darwin i'm gonna have toubles...

Yes, Andrew, i'm using the latest version of your map...oh, well...i hope so:-)
It's not a big deal btw.
China for me is ok as it is right now.

In reply of Kaiser.... I know my opponent. He's a fan of strategic bombing and air superiority. He's going to mass hundreds of Bombers and Fighters at Diamond,Dacca,Chandupur and all those bases next to Nepal, bombing Burma and IndoChina to stoneage. I do not care much for Burma industries and resources but Bankok and Hanoi are quite important for me.... I know it will be very costly a mini Hangover. That's why i said that for the moment it remains a possibile operation, just a possibility. It depends how well things will go in Java and Northern Oz. If i manage to take northern Oz and Java/sumatra by the end of Feb 42 and at the same time expand a bit in the solomons, then i can think of Eastern India...if things will go slower i will have to consider other ways for my expansion
