On EBAY, I recently purchased an old history book of the Franco-Prussian War published in 1871 (talk about hot off the press!) and it caused me to recall that on the ADANAC site, this war was listed as a future game......Frank, when the smoke clears and the dust settles on your current projects, will this potential gaming title be revised?

Its my favourite war, if you can say such a thing, so I want to do it but I'm going to be very busy for the next 12-18 months, so I won't be able to do anything till then. Fascinating topic though, both the Imperial and the Republican phases (and the Commune too for that matter, although it wouldn't be in any game).

Thanks for the reply Frank...though it is an obviously long road before such a game might be produced, it is one which I will be looking forward to....in the mean time, I'll bone up on the war once I get my book!

I'm glad to hear that this is still in the works. I also find the whole period of the unification of Germany a facinating subject.

That's true, the 1866 war with Austria is also a great subject.

Anyone played the S+T games on 1866 and 1870?

I haven't, just curious.

JP, who's the author of your 1871 book?

Great defeat for France and french army, however the french soldier has fight, with honor and courage, very brave with them chassepots, but the artillery was less good that german artillery. (Krupp Art)

But the big default was the command poor generals and field marshals.

Frank, the author is James D. McCabe Jr....he wrote a number of books and died in 1883...I do not know if this volume has ever had additional printings since 1871 as I have only found auction sites and antique book dealers selling the original and not reprints....

I was kinda thinking along the same lines. I'd imagine that creating a game about playing the role of Bismarck and unifying Germany would be incredibly difficult. But what a great subject.

Actually, the partially done game Imperial Ambition covers that subject. You play the period as Napoleon III or Bismarck or Austria. Russia and Britain were also in the game but only as possible allies, not primary actors.

Sounds like a winner. Does it stress the military or diplomatic side of the period? Was wondering if it used some of the same engine that goa uses?

Nope, IA uses a completely different system than GoA or Danube. The game stresses the diplomatic as the game moves along from crises to crises. But I won't go into it in detail because its going to be a long time before I get back to it.

Grab "Day of Battle: Mars-La-Tour" by David Ascoli. It's a pretty interesting read.

Bit of a late reply, but one of my favorite military hist books:

The Franco-Prussian War: The German Invasion of France, 1870-1871
~Michael Howard

Well written, objective, nice maps and a lot of analysis to go with the narrative.
