Looking for opinions on this game. Been rather unhappy with Microsoft's CFS2 (though the large mod community has kept my interest) and I had more than a little interest in this product.

However I read a review which was less than kind and it kind of voided me off the game though i've heard there is a patch coming out. Anybody own this game? I'd like to sound out some opinions.

thx

IL2 Sturmovik is best ww2 flight sim out there period, Pacific Fighters is a stand alone game (or a giant expansion if you have Il2) that isnt quite as good due to some bugs and issues but its still FAR superior to MS CFS2 imo.

Buy IL2 FB and the AEP expansion.

Or wait for Battle of Britian by 1c or Battle of Britian 2 by Rowan.

Pacific Fighters is far better than CFS2 but many are unhappy as it should have come out as an expansion rather than a full price game. Also its rather poor single player experience.

This is what I have read also from several sources. Appears to be the best of the rest. So if you've got that you don't need any others.

How does the Matrix add-in "Banzai" affect your evaluation?

Pacific fighters got bad reviews. It had bugs like AI fighters flying in formation straight into mountainside etc. Hopefully the banzai add-on disk fixes these bugs.

well, I enjoyed the game ( I have IL 2, IL 2 FB, but not ace expansion). I prefer pacific theater over eastern front
Air carrier landing was an interesting exercise as well
If you have IL2 FB and ace, PF allows you to upgrade those two games to PF engine while you are installing the game
Oleg (develpoer of the game) recently had car accident but he plans to release a patch soon according to his post in the official forum, quite devoted guy
There was even a fund raising campaign for him among fans who frequent the forum
There are really dedicated fan base there and quite active communication with the developer himself two

Try this link and maybe you could ask your question to the members there

PC gamer, but not reviewed by andy mahood, gave it 88 (overall, gamerankings.com average is 77) not a bad one
If you are interested in multiplay I thin this one is a must
For single play I think you may prefer IL 2 but you will eventually end up buying this if you are hooked by IL2

Those gross bugs were dealt with a long time ago. Main beef now seems to be absence of torpedo bombers and (as ever) various flight models.

PF also shipped with a less than superb selection of missions. The Banzai! pack I assume would deal with that.

Overall I liked it...FB/AEP is maybe better (of course you can add them all together as a combined install) but so much depends on which theatre you are most interested in.

Yes i read that the game and the entire IL series in general seems to be bereft of a sufficient auto-pilot/warp feature that brings you to the "action" but instead you have to pilot yourself all the way with only up to a x8 acceration which can still leave you flying and doing nothing for 20-30 minutes. Is that true?

The other aspect that concerned me was the flight model commentry. Things like A6M's keeping pace with Hellcats and a suspect damage model. The latter was my biggest beef with CFS2. Any and all damage received in CFS2 always immediately impacts your plane's preformance on a clearly linear scale. Totally negates the historical "ruggedness" factor of the Allied planes.

That and the super forgiving flight model....i cant spin out to save my life in CFS2 and even landed a burning Zero once that had had it's engine explode and fall off. Should have captured a screen shot of that one

I just wish someone would bring back "WINGS" for the PC's today. Only flight toy I ever had that I played the hell out of. It's WWI though and hardly what one would call a simulator, but, the gameplay, fun and entertainment of it was lifetime if you owned an Amiga 500 and it still worked. lol I have two and dammit they both pooped out on me. Maybe I look into Ebay for one. ;)

The patches for Pacific Fighters are up to version 3.04. The entire IL-2 line of games is superior to any other flight game on the market in my opinion. From what I've read Pacific Fighters was released too early but the patches should have it up speed by now I'd think. I just bought Pacific Fighers yesterday and today downloaded the 3.03 patch (v3.0 to v3.03) (100MB) and the 3.04 patch (19.2MB). Tonight I install them.

Re Wings: Try WarBirds 2005 (http://www.totalsims.com/slicks/wb2005.html). It includes WWI aircraft.

WINGS was more of an "arcade" game than a simulator though. I don't care for simulated flying. I like the arcade types. I musta put $100 into the Red Baron Machine when I played at the arcades years ago.

Both the IL-2 series and WarBirds 2005 can be configured for "arcade" style if that is what you like. WarBirds 2005 is a free download for solitare play. However, if you want to play online, you have to pay a monthly fee. I enjoy them both solitare as I'm not much of a pilot. Don't have the time for the training (practice) it would take to get good at it.
