Status: offline 		This was a pretty good news report that has a vidoe of it at this link.
U-505 was only captured ship in WWII according to the article. Anyone from Chicago ever visited? How was it? Vidoe area in middle right side of the site.

I toured it while on a trip once ,actualy only reasion I stoped in Chicago was to see her, realy she is in prety good shap all things considered, I will tell you this though my impreshion was: Dam this thing is SMALL, I have been in several Cold war subs , but this Boat was small by comparasion.

Status: offline 		I am driving through Chicago on the way back to Michigan to visit the parents this summer. It would be fun to get to see the boat. Television always makes them seem bigger I guess. It is amazing how they put up with those conditions for the duration that they where out at Sea.

Check out the photo “Preparing to take U-505 under tow” with the Guadalcanal in the background.

As a side note - The captain of the Guadalcanal, Daniel V Gallery, has written several books about his experiences in the navy including the capture of the U-505. My personal favorite of his is "Clear the decks!" it shows the humorous side of navy life during WWII. They are worth the effort to find them.

Status: offline 		I toured her years ago. She sat outside for decades; the new indoor exhibit should be spectacular. Recently I was reading an article about this online, and I was struck by its similarity to the Wasa museum in Stockholm, which is amazing. Next time in Chicago I would definitely stop to see the 505 in her new home.

Unless the statement about "the only ship captured" was heavily qualified, i'd be suspicious of any claims in the article. Lots of ships captured in WW2 - but U-505 was the only WARSHIP that the USN captured on the high seas AFAIK.

I saw the U-505 twice - once as a young kid, and once again maybe 30 years ago. I always thought it was really neat, but claustrophopic is a word that leaps to mind. I still have some pictures (bad snapshops) of it that i took, i think.

Seattle hosts an old Foxtrot class Soviet Diesel sub. I havn't visited the U-505 but I have visted several Gato type US Fleet boats in my time. I was amazed at the roominess inside the torpedo room though the aft compartments were more conventionally sized. I recall too how cramped the big WWII "Fleet boat's" were as my compatriot at the time was simply amazed not having really read much about them. I can only imagine how cramped a Type IXw ould be or worse, a Type VII!!! yikes.

Status: offline 		Ive been on her 5 or 6 times. I was also on the silversides one time, they had her tied up at navy pier in chicago. I also got a chance to be on a sub tender in the med, and got a tour on the narwahl. were the navy chief said, push that red button, and after I pushed it an alrams starting going off, he said, no not that one!!....... darn squids and warped sense of humour. I was also on the new jersey, but thats another story.......
