I cannot read any number at all! they are all covered by the # symbol. Other characters (letters) are readable. It is impossible for me to play, which I find extremely frustrating. I suspect this is linked to my laptop model: Compaq Armada E500. Does any one have a clue or a hint? Thank you very much for your kind support ------------------

Unfortunately I have no hint for you, but I have an Armada E500, too. I experienced some problems that I described in message: http://www.matrixgames.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/003941.html I received a response by David F. Wall explaining some NT-related issues in using DirectX graphic libraries. Maybe this applies to your case, as well. Yesterday I found a different problem. Switching (Alt+Tab) from the game to the menu, reading the help file, then getting back (Alt+Tab again) to the game, there was a black stripe in the middle of the screen which was on top of the map or any other game screen. I had to save the game, exit and start SPWAW again. If you are experiencing the same problems maybe there is a general issue and the development team could fix it. Bye. Epursimov.

I wonder whether this could be a font related problem?? Design team: Does the game use inbuilt fonts or does a specific font need to be installed on the machine?? Christophe: Have you ever played the game and have the numbers/letters ever show up correctly?? If so, have you had a crash or played round with the fonts directory or anything like that recently??? Best of luck, Reg.

Thank you for your reply. No I did not touch anything on the font libraries. Pacific War is running, but the digits (except 0) are unreadable being overwritten by what I guess are ASCII symbols! I am so frustrated, I can see the game, but I can't communicate with the computer! If anyone has a suggestion, I am ready to try (almost) anything....

If we're talking about Pacific War, then fonts in Windows has nothing to do with the PacWar display. PacWar is built with a GUI graphics kit, so PacWar is writing directly to an EGA resolution graphics mode. The fonts are rendered to the screen by this GUI kit. Windows is out of the loop, and has turned over screen control to the game (but hooks Alt-Tab so you can get back to Windows), and the game switches to an EGA graphics mode and does its own thing. If the problem isn't a lack of DOS memory, or something peculiar about the Compaq machines, then I haven't a clue.
