Thanks AdmSpruance,

Interesting that you could confirm it. Its' still a bit of a mystery to me. I can understand that you didn't get any escort due to the target setting but it doesn't really explain the absence of CAP. Just like you mentioned it couldn't be overload since the bombers flew. I also noticed that more or less all Wildcats (if my guesstimate of your ships is correct) flew CAP during the later attacks.

Something else I thought about was that Belleau Wood had fightrs from other carriers. I guess that means that they actually were in the air when that carrier was hit. But where?

There are two other options I can think of. If some fighters did fly escort they could have missed the bombers and the target. Very realistically modeled. I think since similar things happened IRL.
The only other theory I can think of is that the game modeled a similar mistake by the CAP so firing your fighter directors were probably very accurate. Hopefully a very unusual occurence to have all the CAP run away in the wrong direction but still a possibility.
I hope you don't get upset but I must say that for me, watching the game, I think this will make it more exciting for a while.

Good luck both of you

SITUATION REPORT: 6-26-43

EASTERN SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN: INVASION OF GILI GILI

Allied troops surged ashore today led by the newly arrived 3rd USMC Division in their 1st experience under fire. SWPAC command gave the order for a deliberate attack tomorrow.

SOLOMONS CAMPAIGN:

Allied bombers flew base suppression missions against the last 3 Japanese airfields in the south Pacific....Lae, Shortlands and Rabaul.

With the final liquidation of Japanese on Guadalcanal the Allies are in firm control of the southern Solomons. Operations will soon begin to acquire bases in the northern Solomons.

CV Wasp and the damaged CVLs made it back to port. As soon as they stop taking on water they will be sent back to the west coast for refit and repair.

SEAC:

The Japanese sent a transport TF to Rangoon only to be hit by massive naval air attacks from Akyab and Chandpur. Four ships were sunk today.

SITUATION REPORT: 6-27-43

EASTERN NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: GILI GILI SECURED

All Japanese defenders of Gili Gili were annihilated today in an Allied deliberate attack. Seabees are on the way to build Gili Gili up into a major airbase(300 plane capacity) for reduction of Rabaul.

Eastern New Guinea is looking pretty green now so the campaign has basically reached a successful conclusion save for the mop up of about 30,000 IJA stragglers in the jungles outside Buna and Port Moresby.

The 3rd USMC Paratrooper Battalion has gone AWOL and is missing in action following the drop on Salamaua. CINCPAC has cancelled all future paradrops until the problem can be identified.

WARPLANS SUMMER 1943: RINGS AROUND RABAUL

The next Allied objective will be the isolation of New Britain Island and the reduction of its major aerodrome at Rabaul. Ground and naval units of SOPAC and SWPAC will conduct a series of lightening thrusts to capture and develop a circle of bases around New Britain Island.

SOPAC:

US Army and Marine forces will island hop through the northern Solomons and build a series of mutually supporting airfields to support a thrust into the Bismarck Archipelago. These operations will be supported by USN CV and surface TFs and by landbased air at Munda. Land based air at Guadalcanal will suppress the Japanese airfield at Shortlands during this operation.

SWPAC:

Allied ground units will leapfrog NW along the New Guinea coast capturing and developing airbases and will link up with SOPAC in the Bismarck Archipelago to close the ring around Rabaul. These operations will be supported USN and Royal Navy CV and surface TFs and by land based air at Port Moresby and Buna. Gili Gili has already constructed its 1st fighter strips and will soon be enlarged into a massive bomber base to suppress Rabaul.

SITUATION REPORT: 7-16-43

Airfields at Lae and Torokina are now operational. Amphibious activity has momentarily slowed down as hordes of transports move engineers and supplies across the south Pacific to the newly captured bases. The USN and the Royal Navy should be ready for a new series of assaults to surround Rabaul in a few days.

I had a paratrooper unit disappear when I paradropped it into Salamaua 3 weeks ago. I just clicked on the sw corner of Salamaua hex and apparantly found a ghost unit. If I give it orders to move to Lae, will it reappear in the game when it arrives??

Here is the screenie of the ghost unit:

Now that's putting some excitement into the game! Evidently the IJN can still put up a fight--but I don't know if it was worth the loss of Soryu and the crippling of Ryujo to do it.

Well I wasn't planning on losing either.

They had approached undetected, and were out of position by one hex the turn before. All Allied carriers and airbases were socked in, my carriers weren't, and one of the Allied TFs wasn't either... But I was one hex out of range... frustration!

And then I got greedy and stuck around another turn. I saw he was going for Emirau, so I placed my carriers to hit Admiralty Islands and the Landing TF there, but be out of range of his carrier counter-strikes... and I was.... I overlooked however the two hexes I moved W (by the map) I moved into LBA range from Lae... and definitely paid the price. I also overlooked restricting my bombers to the 4 hex range so they would only fly against the Admiralty Island TF... hoping that most of his air cover was over the Emirau ops and his own carriers. I am pretty sure they were as I flew some sweeps from Truk that turn too

I knew (hoped) his carriers would come boiling after me to make the kill. Since my escort had separated from the carriers because of their damage, and they were in range of Admiralty... I thought I might as well send them in to disperse/disrupt his landing. It worked well, and I got them all safely away too! In at full speed and out away from land with covering Zeros from Truk.

MY carriers as you saw were not so lucky. I should have sent them towards Truk too, but it was a 50-50 shot that he would try to get between me and Palau, or simply move up towards Palau staying on the outside of the carriers from Palau. I guessed wrong.

IJN carriers late in the game are a liability. I either keep them at home since they can't really hope to take on the Allied TF carriers, and so they don' t ever get used... so why am I saving them? Or I use them with the knowledge that sooner or later my luck will run out. My luck ran out, but the IJN saves face if not VPs. I try to pick attacks that will be of benefit to me without loss of course, but they don't always work.

My Akyab raid could have gone better... I got in, hit the port, and got away clean. Only problem was my recon said there was more than one ship there... there wasn't. It could have been spectacular.

I'm not happy I lost those two (think the Ryujo will sink today) but I'd do it again if I had the chance. I can't idly sit by and watch him advance...

OPEN SEA NORTH OF NEW GUINEA:

British CVs pursue the insolent Japanese surface TF and close to within 120 miles. Unfortunately, a rain squall closes in over the carriers and their aircraft cannot be launched. The IJN surface forces will get away this time.

The USN CVEs also pursue the retreating IJN TFs and launch a partial strike of TBF Avengers escorted by F4U-1 Corsairs. The Avenger pilots are estatic that they finally have an opportunity to launch naval attacks and get out of their usual ground support operations. They find CVL Ryujo limping along billowing smoke from stem to stern and put 3 torpedoes in her.

Incredibly, Radio Tokyo Rose reports that CVL Ryujo is still afloat and making her way to Saipan!

SITUATION REPORT: 7-28-43

SOPAC:

The final 3700 fanatical Japanese remnants scattered in the jungles on Buin are liquidated by the US Army 43rd Infantry Division after a massive carpet bombing attack by 400+ heavy and medium bombers.

USN CV, Bombardment and Amphibious TFs form up off the coast of Kavieng in preparation for the invasion scheduled for 7-30-43. Tomorrow should see a massive preparatory aerial bombardment of Kavieng by 600+ Allied bombers.

F4U-1 Corsairs touch down at Green Island as the new airfield there becomes operational.

SWPAC:

Royal Navy CVs and USN CVEs cover buildup on Emirau and Admiralty Islands.

Mop up operations on IJA troops at Finshafen and Dobodura to begin within a week.

SOPAC:

USN gets things FUBAR again as disoriented LCT coxswains unload their assault troops on Tabar Beach instead of Kavieng. It was a nice dress rehearsal as nearly 800 bombers rototilled the jungles on Kavieng (also known during WWII as a "Spruance Haircut"). Troops are then reloaded as the invasion is postponed for a day.

SITUATION REPORT: 8-3-43

SOPAC:

Kavieng was secured yesterday and seabees are now landing to make the airfield operational. The defeated Japanese defenders fled into the jungles to the south....they will not be pursued.....they will be left to starve until the war is over.

SWPAC:

Land based air at the forward airfield of Wasile on Weda in the DEI continue to interdict Japanese shipping in the PI. DD Shirayuki and 3 TKs are sunk off Davao with several more TKs left floundering.

The Allies have now sunk 42 TKs in addition to several hundred AKs and APs. Dont know if that makes a dent in Japanese transport capability or if the Allies have only scratched the paint. Altogther Japan has lost 720 ships to 399 Allied.
