When it comes to producing wine or food or iron, I assume that different provinces produce different amounts, given equal efforts. I am unclear how to see this particular quality of a province, however. (Sorry if I am overlooking the obvious here.)

You aren't overlooking the obvious at all. I believe the designer will release a info pack on the workings of the economy - it is very hard to figure out.

What we know at the moment is:
- each province has a hard coded capability to produce certain goods (so Andelusia is great for horses, and Tuscany great for wine)
- that capability is modified by the developments in the city - farms help produce both horses and wine, for example
- the largest determiner of production is usually province current population
- although the province is accurate when it tells you that 'we think we are good at textiles', no one says food or labour, and these are not comparative - it is not necessarily better than your other provinces, and it may have a capability that doesn't get mentioned which is the best you have...

I have some guides to provincial production which I will try to get out ASAP to help people along - in the meantime, I suppose ask more questions here.

Thanks!

Although I have read that this game stacks the deck against you in this endeavor, I have an urge to try to get the upper hand through building my economy. So I am, of course, anxious to get these province ratings. I find it odd that they don't show up in-game or at least in the manual; I can't believe a ruler wouldn't know which of his provinces had the best capacity for producing iron. :)

Are the provinces fairly historical in what they are good at producing? Bordeaux good with Wine and Silesia good with Iron; that sort of thing. You seem to imply this with the horses in Andulusia. If they are, this will help in getting a general idea about production.

Yes, all the rating seem to be based on historic research (well, as close as could be managed) - I am pretty impressed.

To get you going, here are the ratings for the provinces that start under French control.

I have offered to produce some nice reports (from reverse engineering the text files that come in the game) - once the nice people at Matrix/WCS figure out how to get them onto the web for you, I expect they will all be available: give us a couple of days.

I have been poring over the manual tonight and am about 2/3rds done and I must say that I am extremely impressed with the depth and content. I think CoG actually trumps EU in gameplay depth and sophistication. Thanks for all your efforts to ease us conscripts into the game. This is definately not one of those pitch the manual in a drawer and dive right in kind of games and I love it. God I can't wait to see what the future holds for this engine.

Thx to Ralegh for making it less necessary to gloss over history books (or at least the info. embedded in EU/Victoria) for hints about the comparative advantages for the provinces.

Thanks, Raleigh!

I am looking forward to Sweden, Britain, and Russia. Are there text files that I could read for myself, or is it more complicated than that?

Again, thanks. You are making the learning curve in this game much easier.

Okay, I am looking at the text file EuProv2.txt in the scenerio folder. (To read it better, I pasted it into Excel.)

The info here may or may not be relevant. When I check Andulusia, I see that it has a number under "horse production" of 4.

I don't know if this means "innate ability of the provice to produce horses" or just "current level of production at the start of scenerio."

I note that Andulusia has a 4 for horse production and a 9 for food in the EuProv2.txt file for all the scenerios (there is no separate folder for the standard scenerio)

However, a cursory look shows that this info matches up with what you gave for French provinces.

I think, though, that this info would be helpful. (Mods, just take it down if you don't want it here. :) )

If you do a right click on a province there is an option for province resources. As to the maximum quantity or quality of that resource, that is not displayed.

This would be very helpful. A manual addendum explaining the economics in details is much needed.

From the tutorial manual:

"You should be aware, that there are many factors that affect national production, so that the total production of resources is almost never simoly the sum of the provincial productions"

But what are these factors exactly? I found only national morale as a possible reason. But there must be other reasons, too.

Under the National Production Ajustment table, I find:

Developments
Population
National Morale
Taxes
Feudal
Waste

All of these modify final production in one way or another.
