AREA THREE
Weekly report
LtGEN Yamishita reporting

Area 3 remains quiet, some enemy 4 engine bombers have been reconning our positions
Supplies are good, and the 1st oil tankers from area 3 have sailed.
I personally remain outside of soerabaya.

I ask for a new naval and air commander for this area - they are incompetent - far too many ships are being lost to the soerabaya air.
And just how am I suppose to suppress soerabaya with out any bombers at all!?

But for my borrowing artillery and engineers from my arae command, i would doubt my ability to take this place.
The Helens must remain at darwin

moriati as ordered is being turned into a linchpin base.

Area 3 requests additional asw units and naval lift.

Area 5 weekly report

RADM Ntiekamaya reporting

Still no sake delivered!
really, without sake to break the boredom here, I cannot cope

We dig lots of holes, and watch the navy rush about with there subs - nearly 10 in harbour at the moment.
The field here is empty, all my planes are at Tarwana, awaiting the strike I feel must come soon.
No sub activity this week, which is good.
Additional men , naval guard units would be appreciated
And some better food.

Combined fleet report

the Fleet is currently re organising as the conquest phase of the war winds down.
Fuel remains my principle concern.
Truk has none
Gilberts very little
The majority sits at Tokyo in the AO fleet

This is really restricting operations. KB is refitting at home.
I need one month, just one while I refit the joke that Area 2 calls the divisions released to me.
With thiss in mind I have ordered TF123 to show the flag in the bay of bengal, and as far as fuel will allow, KB2 to do the same around the gilberts area.

Its the bestI can do this month
repairs are totally too slow - BB hiei is still 18 system damage, and Yamarishio also still at 11

Several CVs are in the teens as well.
Not satisfactory

Naval air remains good.

The final defence plan (as wargammed ) will be a swift counter strike at his invasion - hopefully baker or at wake
I need, as said, 1 month to rebuild the troops, refit the ships, and with some oil dribbling in now - build some fuel reserves
The empire is on a knife edge - the enemy must be led to believe we are as strong as ever.

Please emphasise to home command the need for more haste in ship[ repairs - the 3 AR ships due in 2 weeks may help somewhat.
Do I need more?

Combined fleet appreciates China front being quiet - just how long can we keep GEN hatas on leave???

Its the 22/5/42
The clock really is ticking

IN area 1 (burma malaya sumutra thialand) after a long quiet spell, things are warming up again - I hope tabpub feels that an offensive is about to happen.
35 oscars,26 sally and 61 lilly attack mandalaby, met by a dozen hurricanes
he lost 7, i lost 3 sally and 6 lilly, which hurt a bit

Got the divisions mixed up, its 55 div advancing north from pagan, I hope to "pin" some of his units west of mandalaby, while 4th mixed tries to work around to the west as well.
To the east, 35brigade has covered 55 miles trying to flank to the east.
23 mixed remains at pagan, and 33 div is in reserve at rangoon
Significant air units arrived today.
The lillies are too fragile I feel, they are going back to the phillipines, do some training and join the ASW effort.
The forces in Area 1 are now 2 oscar units, 4 sally units, 1 topsy,3 recon, 1 nate.
Naval air (which did not fly today) is 3 betty, and 1 zero
At singapore lots of construction troops recovering, and 1 sq of sallies training, with some nells on ASW
TF123 is at victoria point, Yammato, nagato, mutsu
anothher small 2cl,4dd force is here as well

Sumutra has a mixed reg in reserve, and soerabaya is now producing 47 units of oil - pathetic
Singapore is going backwards on supplies
Busy minelaying the mallacca straight, in a AI game saw a sub hit a mine this week - so Ill try to build a barrier.

IN area 2 - the phillipines, borneo, java, troops are relocating to manilla, or taking up guard at clarke
2 sally units, and who ever needs training will use bataan as a target
16HQ,2nd div,8th tank,1st eng,56,65 brigades will be the guard unit
the divisions are wrecked here -54th (167)253 -48th div (32)350 so not too bad and 56th div (20)422.
So 2 divisions will sail this week for Truk, poor 54th will probably remain in the phillipines
Plenty of SNLFs here, all badly in need of restoration

Borneo is producing a fair bit of oil, Tarakan is at 70 units out of 100, another month.
But simply put I have well in excess tanker capacity to oil being produced.
Not good
On java 3 divisions are engaged at soerabaya, Im waiting on 2 engineer and artillery units to arrive , then I will attack
The bombardments this week have killed about 200 to 300 every day, so Im pretty confident about this attack

Lombok island is a pain, more troops - paras on the way
Soerabaya air has been an absolute nightmare, I have 3 zero units trying to provide cap ect - just cannot seem to engage his bombers
very glad Australia is blocked off, so no reinforcements coming in, or his units to get out

ARea 3 - North australia, timor, celebes, palua area was very quiet.
Im building Moriati big time with a horde of engineers, they will move on soon.
He is reconning my troops from alice springs
In a head to head Im trying as an experiment - aussie troops marching north seem to run out of supplies quick - hope tabpub finds the same

AREA 4 - the solomons and PNG
Truk now 30000 supplies. Some enemy subs operating near Gilli, gilli.
Lots of transport planes arrived at lunga today
This area is too quiet
The combined fleet is iether at home, at truk, or at sea with KB2, which is going to lurk about Tarwana and wave the flag for a while

Area5
The gilberts
Totally quiet, spent today replacing Glenns on subs, all the plane carrying subs are at Kwal., readying for ops next month

Area 6 - China
Except for a single mongolian unit that got itself stuck on the wrong side of the river near Yenen, this front slumbers
For the entire game his china planes have bombed away - must be 90 experience by now.
Some AVG appears now and then.
I have refused to play his game and engage him, I just do not want to have to send planes to this theatre - I can wear the light casos inflicted. Its Hong kong industry I worry about
The huge armies engaged last month slowly recover.
I think we are both glad this area is quiet

The last area - the north, is very quiet - and I really hope it stays that way, though I doubt it

Overall, i hope to crack soerabaya by mid year, and that will be the last conquest
For players who complain the game does nort really reflect history, I wish they could see my logistic situation - oil is low, fuel is low - so low I cannot conduct major naval operations at the moment - supplies are low, and replacements are delayed by lack of supplies and the like in japan.
getting ships repaired is a matter of despair - they sit in harbour, and sit, and sit, and little happens.
I expanded ship repair a bit too.

The overall driving concern is his CVs - I have absolutely no idea where they are, and he has had 4 uninterrupted months to beaver away preparing his counter.

Only bright point is state of my pilots - they are still very, very good

I Know I cannot win the game now - but I want to do better than history.
If he attacks an isolated post next month - probably baker or wake -initially Im going to let him have it, then return with absolute overwhelming force - and hopefully force a CV on CV battle, destroy on the ground a lot of LBA, and kill the 1st marine division

well, that is the plan anyway

How quick things change!

Area1 - 27 zeros swept mandalaby today, met by 15 hurricanes
I did not pay much attention to the replay, until I started noticing zeros falling everywhere.
I lost 7, he lost 6
This is worrying - not the skill lost in my pilots, the improvement by him.
The zeros here are " mogami method" topped up, I think they will go back to betty escort
I order a big raid for tomorrow - 4 sqs of Sallies, and every oscar in theatre
troops enter hex north of pagan, and also cut road to east of mandalaby

Area2
27 zeros on cap fail to stop 2 martins hitting an AP at batavia
Someone did poorly today!

Area3-The enemy continues to recon my troops south of darwin, and thats it

Area4 - began an airlift of supplies to Ndindi island from lunga

Area5 - canton island has B26's, hardly big news that

Area6- South of yenen the chinese airforce keeps on pounding a poor mongolion unit. other than that, all quiet.

Home/combined fleet - What does a man need to do to get a ship, anyship to repair!!!
My ARs are due in 5 days - hope they help.
If I waste a whole month here in japan and KB does not improve in system knowledge, I will be very angry, I could be down south disrupting his plans

The big troop convoy retiring from the phillipines ran over an enemy sub south of japan, and sank it today.

I know the sub debate has died away - Tabpub and myself really do laugh at some of the "facts" put up.
We both agree that this game has got subs so RIGHT!!!!
Thats right - totally correct.
Its all about using them correctly

Ive lost just 3 or 4 for the game
he has lost 6, maybe 7 I think - for what 70 APs sunk already!!!
Ive got half my airforce on ASW, his tactic - simply operate where there is no ASW air - I cannot cover everything
I use ASW groups - his tactic, get spotted - move!

My subs do not challenge convoys, or operate in air areas iether.
They are for scouting (especially the glenn equipped ones) and for hunting cripples - (just aint been many of them)
I am very pleased that mid 42, my sub arm is still very, very viable.

The further we go into this game, the more obvious - play it realistically - and the rewards just multiply

Finally Tabpub tells me - he does not play against AI - so he says he is actually rehearsing amphib landings somewhere
Now that is serious stuff!!!!
But it does give me a clue to his plans
Yammato bets high command 50 dollars that the 1st enemy counter thrust will be Baker island.

A foretaste of what is to come I think today

Area1
72 oscar,106 sally encounter 25 hurricanes over mandalaby
For 30 odd hits 4 hurricanes are shot down, 9 destroyed on the ground
7 sally, 15 oscar lost
North of Pagan, 42 B17, wellingtons hit
Akyab is lightly raided
55 division bombards 2 units, I would need engineers to attack here - unfortunately they still remani at soerabaya op
the enemy reacts, a unit spotted north of mandalaby - not sure what it is doing
Tabpub is wondering in the mail - is this a effort - or a diversion
Its both - if soerabaya falls soon

The big worry is the oscars
Sallys - well actually lots of pilots in their units, so rest a day, then back we go
The oscars- I disband 1 unit into another.
The lillys are enroute to the phillipines for training, ASW stuff

Area2
Still waiting for engineers to arrive soerabaya - man, slow
AO ONDO crawls into batavia- made it!
2 martins zoom in - AO ONDO does'nt make it

the bataan training program begins. Troops in the phillipines are recovering, its going to take at least a month or more.
2 divisions are marching to legaspi to load.

No action anywhere else at all.

2 zero squadrons arrived in japan today - previously disbanded ones - no pilots.
After getting 54 new ones -they have 30 experience
So to bataan training ground they will have to go.

No ships repaired anywhere today - again
have dispatched AKs to remote map spots hunting down fuel, to deliver to Truk
KB2 is south of narua island

Gaining palembang with no oil, no resources available is slowly strangling me, oil level in the empire drops to 800000 tons, and every drop avaolable is being busily beavered home - just not enough available

Area1 - a better day indeed
27oscar,27 zero - flying at 18000 feet, and 65 betty,12 sally bombers at 28000 feet encounter 11 hurricanes

Much better, the fighters bounced the hurricanes, lost only 1 and shot down 8, a further 6 destroyed on the ground
NO BOMBERS LOST - and the elite pilots did well

Akyab hit by enemy fighters
mandalby is now a 3 hex wide front - over time I should do better - he has the poor supply lines.
Still a unit on the road north of rangoon, a snlf will have to be dispatched soon.
Im very stretched here for land forces
Palembang reaches 50 oil, so I stop repairs on that, turn to resources for a while - how many needed to generate significant supplies here?
Anybody?

Area 2
Nasty sod lands 20 troops via a sub in Madieon!!.
Wont effect anything really, but grrrrrr, the cheek.
A snlf is dispatched
A sub sinks a MSW in batavia harbour

His Martins sweep into batavia again - but I got the altitude right today, the zeros shoot them down.
More troops unload at Lombok
The attack on soerabaya can commence in 2 days - 288 men killed in todays bombardment
bataan bombing range is open for business

Tarakan at 74 oil - getting there

Everywhere else is quiet, B17s visit Ndindi - no hits
And baker island is reconned

I put a bucket load of units down for canton island attack -hope his signit works.
also put 2 divisions preparing for baker island - no harm in being prepared is there

No ships repaired today

Area 1
burma
what a fine sight they made - 82 sallies, 35 oscars on the way to mandalaby

They met 30 hurricanes
12 oscars lost, 7 sallies lost, only 1 oscar shot down
I must replace the leader, most of the oscars turned back, abandoning the bombers.

Area2,
sub action Lombok - miss
The deliberate attack on soerabaya - 0 to 1, forts 9
2050 casos to 1060
This will be a heavy battle

Area 3
Sub off darwin

Area 4
quiet

Area 5
KB2 lurks off Baker- unspotted - I have ordered the dispatch of 2 BBs to the area as well

Area 6
North of canton, an enemy push
I am not concerned at all

Area 1
As P40s sweep akyab, a new plan comes up for mandalaby
2 CVEs sail North towards rangoon, and extra zeros go to mouliem

Area2
Sub action off batavia - miss
And now for the nasty news, 33 liberators stage out of Soerabaya, and hit balikapapan 16 oil hits
OUCH!!!!
lombok fell - good
soerabaya attack, 0 to 1 - forts to 8
2000 casos to his 1300, man this is tough
I must move the sallies from Burma to this theatre, grrrr

Area 3
ZZZZZZZZZZZ

Area 4
some B17s hit Ndindi

Area5
the KB2 still remains undetected - lots of ships sighted at canton island.

And at china, he pushes another unit north of canton, I will deal with this soon.
And shock horror, some ships repaired

Area1
Revenge today
24 zeros from mouliem sweep over mandalaby
then 23AM3 and 27 more zeros sweep the place - the CVEs launch
24 Hurricanes intercept
only 1 lives

Area2
batavia is hit today by the liberators, buggar, 17 oil hits here.
I use sonias at soerabaya trying to suppress, ouch, the flak!

No other action on the map

Oil has definately turned the corner in japan, thankfully
So have supplies
tommorrow the sallies open up on soerabaya - never going to get oil from it, so I must shut it down, before he wrecks what I have left producing!

Well I have hit the wall I think

30/5/42
The empire has reached its limits for sure, as we grind to a halt on all fronts....

Area1, in burma little action today, hes woken up to what Im up too now, the E mails are very taunting - he's going to be a rat of an opponent when he gets the upper hand I think (thats ok, the turns keep flowing)

Area 2
he reckons the dutch are almost done - I think I fell for his trap.
the deliberate attack gets 0 to 1, 2100 casos to his 1300.
No fort reduction
I hit him with 106 sallies as well.
In return his liberators ( and this is fast turning into a war winner for him) cream another 15 oil points today, at Miri.
Every spare fighter - instead of being offensive, is now trying to stop - very badly these terrible pests.

Elswhere, nothing, zip
(oh- hes pushing north of canton, please, I don't need the china front right now, go away!!!)

Area 1 weekly report

well, how angry do they want me to be.
Push Im ordered - so I do.
And then my promised troops are wrecked at soerabaya, all my bombers go south, and the zeros disapear!!!
35th brigade is engaged, at 100%
55 div is engaged, at 100%
23rd mixed , 1st tank are south of mandalaby , at 100%
4th mixed at Pagan is at 75%,
12NLF is chasing an indian unit on the road north from rangoon
33rd DIV is reserve at Rangoon - I must not move it - paranoid about a landing south of rangoon.
If the navy disapears, I will be very worried
Its prescence at victoria point -2cve, 3 bbs, is comforting
I despair of capturing mandalaby.
Finally-replaced the oscar leader with some one who might not turn back -he tries to restore his pilots moral

Area2 weekly report
Simply put, despite my confidence of ultimate victory, I cannot handle such a large command - 16th army - those so called singapore heros are worse than useless.
The liberators from the field at soerabaya are destroying the very reason we wage war.
I demand the bombers fly at batavia -storms mean nothing to me - shut down the field!!
I understand the offensive power of the units outside soerabaya is all but finished - I blame the navy for failure to supply enough support - and why do we have BBs? a few mines!, what damage can mines do to a warship like yammato.
I suggest bataan be taken - this target practice stuff is @!#$#@!
I am pleased to report that this week not a single convoy, oil or resource ship was sub attacked, the route is very well air covered, and no subs have even been sighted near it.

Area 3
Weekly report
As requested supplies to soerabaya are being dispatched
Oscars have been dispatched
We dig in
Moriati is building very nicely

Area4 weekly report
I remain satisfied with progress.
the dispatch of combined fleet units to Gilberts is agreed to.

Area 5
Building continues
I await patiently for promised naval guard units that formed in Febuary
Any word on their progress?
Canton island remains a hive of activity

Area 6
The enmey is probing north of canton - we remain as ordered, passive

Area 7
Sir, as ordered, oil and fuel is being bought in from remote areas
I remain totally unable to carry out orders to occupy the kuriles - having niether ships, men, or support.

Combined fleet
Finally ships start to repair
kaga is at 11, shokaka at 16, zuikaka 10, akagi 7
yamarishio is 11, Hiei at 15
The sighting reports at canton island are very interesting -CAs, a BB, APs
I am so tempted to strike, but will stick to the plan, let him strike 1st
at baker

Supplies are so, so, the loss of oil production this week is very regrettable
Should 16th Army HQ fail to act this week, I will....

tabpub offers - I withdraw the liberators, you stop torturing me at bataan and finish them off.

I decline, we continue a very, very painful period of the game - for both of us.

Today the liberators attacked batavia - the zeros did not stop them

2/6/42

7 out of 9 areas have storms, so batavia remains shut down
0 to 1 at soerabaya - 3100 casos to 1000
Ah crud
Combined fleet issues orders today

General fleet order XXXX
The situation is dire for the empire, stubborn enemy resistance is causing considerable anxiety to the emporer.
I desire to swiftly finish this problem
Thus

16th Army HQ will immediately attack at bataan, and finish this campaign
All units not engaged in this operation, regardless of condition will immediately move to soerabaya (56 div, 2 tank regiments)
soerabaya forces shall not, repaet the fruitless attacks until resupplied - reinforced
25 HQ will escort ( I demand full air HQ co operation) all supply convoys I have dispatched

despite incomplete repairs -KB will sail today
3 BBs to follow, and the fast BBs as soon as possible.
they will gather at point YX, with KB2

I desire to redeploy the army, ready for phase 4 ops - further half cocked efforts at attack, will not be tolerated

This game is so , so frustrating.
I thought the dutch were just a bunch of milicia - who folded very fast - or am I the king of bad combat rolls

In burma no action today

Another day of liberators - 30 odd fail to find target
then 3 did, met 15 zeros, 3 less to worry about

21 sonias hit soerabaya, and finally some sallies
Tabpub is gloating that this is great therapy for him, Im going out of my mind here!!!

6 B17s , 25 zero over port moresby, no losses iether side

At lombok, a fiasco, in the afternoon the liberators and some light bombers attack, the oscars do not fly from bali, and down goes 1 ap, and another APD
At clarke, smashed him, we advance as per yesterdays orders.

In burma the front has quietned down, we bombard each other east and west of mandalaby.
He has if recon is to be believed over 60 fighters there, not sure if thats true though.
We try to swing to the east of the place, what Ive done is replaced the units due south with just a single SNLF, a huge gamble.
All the units there swing east, and will strike north, hopefully turning the east flank

Some construction units finally arrive banhkok, and can go and build reahang up a bit, need more air bases I think

In area 2
All the action really occurs here.
2 sub attacks today off batavia, score APs that are headed to palembang to get troops
His liberators attacked balikapapan today, 12 did, met by zeros only 3 pressed the attack
In turn 82 sallies hit soerabaya, 50 plus airfield hits
50 more join today, and I will keep attacking until the menace is gone

Also under area 2 remains the phillipines, and borneo, convoys continue, and troops march in the phillipines, 54 div slated for soerabaya as well

Area3
darwin, and the CELEBES, and the ambonia area.
Moriati builds, and oil slowly pumps onto 2 tankers.
Other than that, all is quiet.
darwin and derby dispatch a lot of supplies towards soerabaya.

Area4
Now stretching from palua, to truk to lunga, this area fairly quiet, a handful of B17s attacked Port moresby, no damage iether way today
A sub hits, and sinks a AP bringing 4th div troops to truk, so unfortunately he now knows at least 1 div is enroute
lots of float planes enroute to go cover the new convoy route I am establishing.
At the moment ships just sail due south from home, too easy to predict.
So all ships for truk will join the bonin island, legaspi, jolo route, then go via palua, then the string of islands to the south east to truk
Longer, slower, but lot more aircover, and as its a lot less chance of being intercepted route I feel.

Area5
The gilberts/4th fleet bases
Still very quiet, KB2 withdraws to a small island to hide, and await KB proper, which is enroute
Canton island is an absolute hive of activity - signet at work for sure
My only concern is this is a fient -maybe wake is the target
Wake, baker, does not matter - both will be targets for a counter

Area 6
China
real quiet, too quiet.
Frankly lost interest in this theatre at the moment, Im digging in until 43

Area 7
Nothing to report, just some fuel runs

Combined fleet and home defence
Im going to have to do an audit - just how do you calculate how much supply is being produced?
then I will audit how much each area is demanding.
Supply is so tight, I need to know if I'm going backwards or not
15 days until another cvl arrives, this can join eastern fleet and then go and cause trouble.

I hate this - the old pucker does a sucker every time a tanker appears on the screen - sub attack on a 16000tonner near batavia - miss

The war seems to have ground to a halt, but a lot is afoot I think

Area 1
Confirmed at least 48 hurricanes on CAP at mandalaby, and 12 hit pagan today
the 23rd mixed,4th mixed and 1st tank have covered 22 miles as they move towards the hex west of mandalaby
I hope to surprise him badly - tabpub i hope is assuming that burma is just a "pressure" front
Singapore is draining of supplies - very worried about this

Area2
Enemy air has not flown today, I hit soerabaya with 72 sallies, 57 hits.
I have extra troops, supplies excetera, excetera coming
The zeros covering all the oil ports will have to move again to cover the convoys
54 div will start loading at legaspi tomorrow
In the phillipines, lillies and zeros hit bataan, and the troops enter the base.
I sincerely hope no supplies left there, its been a terrible campaign, embarressing almost.

Area 3
darwin and derby entered the pink for supplies today, as they dispatched many to the soerabaya front.
lets see if 9as I suspect) they are actually generating

area4
the solomons front, more ASW planes are coming south, as I struggle to set up a new convoy route - painful, but essential
I have gambled big - nearly every naval assett is headed from truk towards the gilberts

Area5
the gilberts are heating up, canton island is just a hive of shipping, and planes
so is suva, and I truly believe a sighting of ships doing 18 knots near suva are his CVs
My KB is at Bonin island coming south

Area6
China - he is moving units everywhere - I smell an offensive in the North
tricky stuff in the wind

Area7
the kuriles remain deserted - i send mine laying subs out again

the home front
something seriously wrong with my production settings - running out of nakajima engines fast!
I have temporarily halted zero, kate val and lillie production, 2 or 300 in pools of each, and the loss rate with our stand off is low.
Must fix this today!
supply is 2076455 - poor
fuel is 3345627 - poor
oil is 985799 - (1872) which is poor too, but it is climbing

the empire is on a knife edge, now its up to how aggressive he is.

the imperial division just teleported to tinian island, so wonderful Mr frag has offered to put it back, will be a slight delay as we work out time zones, and little things like sleep I suppose (forum managers, and matrix guys apparently live on 2 hrs of this a day)

Well frag put it back, but it (the imperial div) kept going back.

So we are'nt going to keep harping on about it, so on with the war, the imperial division has "withdrawn" from the siege of soerabaya to "singapore", and will return to the fray once i can get it shipped there.(to singapore)
It can enjoy a rebuild and rest
So thanks Frag for the effort, I have a sneaking suspicion we corrupted a file or something, we wont hassle a very busy man

Its only a game anyway

well, today one of minelayers hit a mine in its own field north of singapore, ooops
ASW action of bali, we won one
He has CVs at canton - well ships speed 28 seems a pretty strong clue
B17s hit west of mandalaby, and I hit him with sallies there, also taking down a few hurricanes with the oscars
training flights in the phillipines
Lombok continues to be a graveyard for my APs, another buefort victim today
ASw near batavia - another sub hit
deliberate west of mandalaby, i get a 3 to 1, he hangs on

And troops sighted marching north up towards darwin
Im going to dispatch BBs to darwin, lots of naval gunfire support should help hold the place. helens dispatched to begin the longrange bombing..

several divisions from phillipines to go to soerabaya.

We spent heaps of try this, try that save, resend, go back, last night, no joy, and I must admit, got very confused with where we are, what save was what.
Im going to spend tonight on a very, very long stocktake , weekly update turn tonight.
Why
the wife aint home - what better time

Plus KB, KB2 have some very important plans to implement.......

Area 1
Weekly report LT GEN Hamma:
Well the "push" has been stopped, the forces west of mandalaby only got a 1 to 1 today, heavily disrupted by a B17 raid just on jump of point.
As commanded, the forces shall withdraw to pagan, then swing west, and try there - as long as casualties are kept low, i should be alright
Burma HQ is 100%
15 HQ is at 100%
23 mixed is at 60%
4th mixed is at 70%
55 div is at 80%
1st tank is at 100%, these forces withdraw in good order towards pagan
south of mandalaby 12 nlf plays its roll
to the east of mandalaby 35 brigade is at 100%
and 33rd div is marching north from rangoon
I am evacuating 123 IJA base force from Akyab

raheng is building , with extra AA units enroute
The navy continues to swing around its bouys, doing nothing - I believe the navy has a plan, and it needs a CVL to arrive, which departed.
I am pleased that I have been promised the Imperial division, which, apparently is enroute to singapore.
Extra artillery from Bataan is also promised.
I do not understand the grand strategy at all , the enemy gets stronger every day, and I recieve little help.
have not seen a japanese bomber for 2 weeks

AREA 2 LTGEN Itagaki
The capture of bataan was a nice moment.
I am enroute to soerabaya, where we will finish off the dutch
I will be pleased to finish this op, things have been difficult, losing the imperial DIV to the burma front (not that he will get it for a month) upset staff badly
Here in the phillipines I have 2nd div, and 54th, both loading and sailing for soerabaya
All the auxillary units here also are loading - Hamma got the imperial, if he thinks he is going to get my guns, he's wrong
The airforce and navy continue to co operate , I have just got 4th mixed into kraeg, and supplies as well
3 sqs of zeros are providing cover, but the navy is paying the cost, several PGs are sunk this week at Lombok, they are a lure to his air, as the important ships get in
At soerabaya 100 sallies pound away,5th, 18th div bombard
I need 2 more divisions.
Fortunately they are in good condition
I remain confident that this will finish quickly once I get there.

I order 65,56 brigades to clean up the outer islands

Area3
LT GEN Yamishita

how pleased to leave the jungle outside soerabaya, and to fly to darwin.
today i watched 38 helens wing there way south, a large army, so gar counted at 5 units has passed through the alice springs intersection, and approaches

One is identified as the aust 1st cav div
1st unit in contact - 32 nlf will be a recon unit, and retire, then 38 div will be the 1st road block
I intend to retire in good order down the road, and the units on the flanks will continously try to cut the road behind him

I have asked for, and been promised a large number of transport planes to supply these units

high command informs me that supplies from kendari are enroute
Most pleasing of all was the supply ship this week, it delivered literally 1000"s of 14" naval shells
I am to recieve battleships Hiei and Kirishima as gunnery support
Yammato tells me that with out enemy air to worry about, they will be glad to act as major artillery anchored safely in the harbour
Apparently they are enroute, sailing yesterday from japan
Supplies are good, moral fantastic.
I look forward to the fight.

Area4
LT GEN Homma
Its a funny situation here
No naval ships here at Truk to note, except a harbour full, literally full of transports , all waiting for fuel
75 000 ton is almost here, it won't be enough
The enemy submarines are in a net around Truk, ASW forces chase them, and score hits now and then.

In the solomons I am trying to relieve some troops, especially construction units, which are worn out.
The fuel situation, and supply situation is critical to the south, again I await convoys with promised supplies - which never seems to come quickly enough

Other problems - 4 divisions are here - 56th,4th,48th,16th, all under 14th army HQ, plus engineers and tanks
quite an army - but if I do not get fuel, they are stuck here
yammato has charged of to the gilberts - he has'nt a clue, grand strategy - bah!

Area5
RADM Ntiekamaya

the fleet is here
let the enemy come
just spoke to yammato, and am confident now of the plan

Area6
Gen hatas
I have returned from leave
The front is quiet, give me permission to attack!

Combined fleet

The war has stalled
despite impassioned pleas to come to a settlement, the War cabinet refuses to seek a settlement
the enemy CVs remain the principle threat.
the Army commanders remani fixated on soerabaya, or burma, or darwin, important yes, but not war deciding

the key is 4 divisions at truk, the enemy must be counting them.
In 1 weeks time the eastern fleet will sail, CVs and BBs headed to tricomalee - and I will announce to the world that the Indian liberation has begun

LT Gen hamma is playing his role well - is the burma attack a ruse, or a real push
Ships in the Indian ocean will hopefully convince the enemy its a ruse, add wieght to the "indian Attack"

And I am convinced this will see the enemy then commit here in the gilberts, and I am ready for him, with the real carrier fleet
I cannot go and attack him, I do not have the fuel.
And I want to fight in betty range
I look forward to the decisive battle

Home front
Supplies 2089136
Fuel 3370235
Oil 941768

major stuff up nakijima engines, none in pool, as some one expanded the wrong factory, this will take months to rectify, fortunately pools of planes are good.
have halted many plane factories this month, to save supply, so that planes in pool can actually be released.
naval shipyards are in good state, just ordered accelleration of taiho.

We are struggling, but can manage.

38 helens hit him at max range
5 units Id so far, one is the 1st Aust cav - 2000 troops, 4000 support Im told.

today a bucket load of hurricanes hit pagan
annoying.
so i will set a sq of zeros that are in theatre on LRCAP, and oscars over the area for tomorrow
My zeros are lying low, just waiting for naval action, but ill let em have a go

Area2
59 sallies hit soerabaya today. lots of supplies unloading
3 sqs of zeros are very busy providing LRCAP in the area

Area3
Im transferring some transports to darwin, and 2 extra sally groups to darwin
6 enemy units about 6 hexes south of darwin, a snlf, and construction unit is in contact- a screen, lets see what he has got
North of them is a division, and then on the flank naval guards and tanks.
in darwin itself are engineers, and another division
enroute are 2 BBs, I hope their guns will be decisive in this fight
More supplies and engineers are loading for the battle.

i am almost tempted to bring another division to the fray, land it at wyndnam, and hit him in the flank.
Its a interesting exercise

Area4
Port moresby is reconned

area5
baker island is hit by mitchells
KB is 1 day out from kwalejien

China is quiet
at home supply is struggling, finally got a few areas over 20000, so troops are building again, lots, and lots of naval guard units to issue - build boys - I need you at the front !

Asw action near soerabaya - miss
sonias hit soerabaya - hit several ships, but suffer from the AA

23 hurricanes sweep pagan again, and the CAP trap works, lost 1 oscar for 11 hurricanes

nice one

24 helen, then 11 hit south of darwin, 193? usa tank battalion id'd
baker island is hit again

a sub in macassar straight - now tabpub knows that a lot of troops are coming down here, I have 6 ASW groups in the area - can i turn it into a sub grave yard?

heaps of "invasion forces" sail from singapore towards tricomalee
set a CAP trap port moresby today
2 nd division loads in the phillipines - target soerabaya - or maybe darwin.

I score a tanker with a sub near pago pago - YAH!!!
36 b17s hit my troops south of darwin, wonder how alice springs is going for supplies
22 B17 hit nindi
20 lilly training in china, and the zeros continue to do the same in the phillipines - they will go to darwin very soon - now in low 50"s, up from the 20"s when formed.
leaving madang, 2 aps hit by soerabaya air - man this place !@#@!@$%%$ me
south of darwin the 1st allied attack - drives the 2 small units off the road
I will fly lots of supplies in to them, and intend to march them SOUTH!, and back onto the road, hopefully cutting it as he rushes north

Finally began to load troops in japan for points south, need to begin really bracing the defences.
It is very nice knowing I have a good reserve though
fuel arrives at Truk - whew!

I lose the daily AK south of truk to a sub today - buggar, this one was full of supplies
And then another AP coming back from port moresby
103 sallys hit soerabaya today, 18 damaged, 124 hits
35 helens operate out of darwin
his soerabaya air attacks again, 11 zeros actually intercept today, shooting down a few. a typical day here - another AP sunk

we throw rocks every where else.

LT Gen Yamishita

operational plan - darwin area

Situation
the objective of capturing darwin has been 3 fold
1/ deny flow of supplies, reinforcements to soerabaya/sumutra
2/ provide a buffer to the now vital oil centres of balikapapan, ambonia and the like
3/ To delay/ prevent any thrust into the southern resource area via Timor, allowing fortification of the area

these objectives have neen achieved.
I have no intention brave soldiers in throwing ourselves away uselessly, yet, i do not intend to just roll over iether.
each man must show how tenacious he is in defence, as brave as he has shown in attack

many things favour us.
1/ the enemy is on a long supply chain - and it is vulnerable
2/ we hold, and will hold air supremecy for many months
3/ we are promised naval support, it is enroute
4/ the enemy cannot over commit here against us, as the empire has 4 divisions currently uncommitted, 3 more at sea
5/ the enemy expects the empire to launch a big offensive this month -and we are busy letting him think this is coming
6/ should the enemy attack in overwhelming force, there is plenty of time to withdraw, should he come in understrength, i can 9and will call upon 2nd division to be sent here.

The plan
Is to conduct a linear defence up the road.
21 division shall be the first point of resistance.
when pressured it will fall back to a point 60 miles north of the derby intersection.
here 81st NG, and 14tank will threaten his flank, on the other light units also will threaten his flanks

I give my word, any forces cut off will not be abandodned -40 transports are here to drop supplies to you.

all units on the flanks will await every opportunity to cut the road behind the advance.
9nlf is enroute to the gulf, to attempt a deep penertration of his supply route

the idea is simple, to delay, and disperse his main thrust -chasing us into the hinterland, or spreading out to defend the road.

at the appropiate time 38 div will form the rock of the defence here in darwin, until evacuation occurs.

forces available
8th fleet HQ
18 Ave regiment
38 div
21 div
91st NG
81st NG
14th tank reg
32 nlf
3rd heavy art
4th eng regiment
51 AA
several part units

In air support -
2sq helens
2 sqs of sallies
2 sqs of zeros (green -but this will be great training!)
1 sq of nates
2 sq of transports

in reserve ( once the enemy come in range - some 40 lillie bombers)
In addition some 20 transports, 2 BB,2CL, 6 DD are assigned.

Imperial Hq requires us to hold until soerabaya is subdued -this is essential
I am confident that we can give the enemy hell.

Im wondering how much propaganda Tabpub is sprouting about fat dutchmen at soerabaya

One of my "invasion" APs enroute to India is sub sunk as it clears the mallacca straight.
25 sonias against 2 wirriways at soerabaya, 1 ak hit,, lost 4 sonias
77 sallies, 18 zeros over soerabaya - 2 wirriway, and 1 wirriway actually hits a zero.

In China a typical day - 13 Nates vs 11 AVG and 8 SBc2 - this happens nearly every other day, scratches each day .
25 B 25 hit baker
26 Lily training in china
Stood down planes in darwin for today
east of mandalaby, its deadlocked - 14000 troops of mine to 7000 of his
At soerabaya - its 61000 to 51000, another deadlock - but I've got 40000 more coming

CVL Ryuho swings into mallacca straight, headed to victoria point, so 2 days and operation - scare the crap out of him - begins

Other things of note- a bit disquieting -7 units coming north to Darwin.
Some new planes arrive - the supply and manufacturing situation in Japan is a mess - one button press wrong and man Im going to pay for it.

I actually am predicting a late 43 finish to this game - Japan is going to collapse from lack of supplies - due to lack of oil - and somebodies SUB campaign is already really starting to bite, 1 or 2 ships a day, and it mounts up.
I hope this will turn around a bit with the end of offensive ops - resource ships have suffered literally no losses - its APs and AKs enroute to battles that he is killing.
Ive probably lost 20 APs and AKs just in the sumutra battles.
Not good

Just to give a picture of the situation - the entire fleet basically - other than eastern fleet (3BBs, 1CVL,2cve) is in the gilberts - and stranded basically while it awaits fuel.
Not,not,not good.

Ahhh well, you live and you learn
I have not made the same mistakes against Wobbly

Hi Herb,

Just caught up with this AAR, a really good read just like your UV one. I like your writing style, I prefer it to all the combat report ones.

Oil. How does oil production repair and can you accelerate such a repair rate?

Do you hold all the oil producing bases? I was going to be clever and say that if I recall from what you’ve written the allies still hold Mandalay. But then I thought about it and realised a. it only produces a small amount of oil and b. if you take it (if you haven’t already) then Tabpub will bomb the crap out of it in less than the period of a single game week (if he hasn’t already). Hmmn, so much for trying to be clever eh?.......

I think I’m better at just saying: ‘Good luck Herbiesan’.
