Hi all,

I purchased this game while still waiting for GOA.
I like the game, one question though:
I read the manual and it states that you can upgrade your army in all kind of different ways, how to achieve this is beyond me. The manual just merely gives you all the different types of upgrades.

Thanks!

See p. 32:

quote:

Each nation starts the scenario with a pre-determined list of upgrades. A nation's total number of allowable upgrades is determined by the total number of Barracks developments the nation has in the provinces it owns.

A nation with more allowable upgrades than it currently has is allowed to choose one new upgrade from a randomly deteremined subset of all upgrades at the beginning of each season (i.e in the January, April, July, and October turns.)

That makes sense.
You've been reading it more thoroughly than I did, thanks!

Pardon me for the dumb question, but does this mean if you build more barracks then you have more chance of getting the upgrades?

I played the 1792 scenario and I am almost to 1799 and only received 1 upgrade Now I know!

Yes, more barracks will provide more upgrades. I believe culture may also have some effect on this, but barracks are the primary. Look at the number of upgrades you have (let's say five) then look at your overall barracks level. Once it gets to 6.00 (in this example) you should be presented with a choice for a new upgrade.

Each nation has an upgrade level equal to the sum of the squares of the barracks and half the sum of the squares of the cultural developments quantity sum divided by fifty. The upgrade level determines the total number of upgrades available to the nation.

I think I may relax this equation in the patch so upgrades are a bit more generously available.

Thanks for that clarification Eric and ..er... Erik.

Are the upgrades described in detail anywhere? Obviously, most of them are reasonably self-explanatory, but is there any way to find out exactly what they do?

I, for one, would be a big fan if you did this! The more upgrades the better, as long as the AI upgrades as well. From what I have seen, the AI is an upgrading maniac and that adds for more equal game play! Some games, the AI doesn't react this way and it's gets real boring! You guys have done it right.

Yes, they're all described in the manual, towards the back if I recall correctly.

I wouldn't relax it.... it's pretty good where it is now imo. If things are too easily gained then the game would lose some of its flavor as each nation becomes too bland as the differences between them decrease.

Check around page 74 or so of the manual.

I there a bias for certain Nations to have a greater chance of aquiring possible Upgrades or is it equally random for every Nation? It would be nice if Nations had a weighted chance to aquire certain Upgrades. England having a much greater chance to aquire naval Upgrades for example. There must be some limitation since some Nations obviously are unable to use some Upgrades; France using the Cossack Upgrades for example.

Britain starts with every single naval upgrade (the reason that Britain can win naval battles even when outnumbered 2:1 and the opponent has the weather gage), so this isn't really an issue at present.

The Cossack upgrades you mention are usable by any nation that produces irregular cavalry, but I agree, there are some upgrades that don't make sense for some nations: (Turkey + Winter Fighting I...; Sweden + Desert Fighting come to mind).

About the formula... is it exact that rewording i came up?

quote:

Each province add ( 2*(barracks)^2 + (culture)^2 ) /100 to the total upgrade level.

So for example a province with barracks(5) and culture(5) will add 0.75 to the total. With 4 of such provinces you are entitled to 3 upgrades.

edit: so with 80 of such provinces you are granted 60 of the 62 upgrades

Your math looks good to me, marirosa.
Of course if you had 80 provinces, the waste would be amazing.

Uh probably a stupid question. But where can I find the upgrade screen? Looked at page 32 but can't find it.

The screen pops up when you achieve the requirements and then you can choose from the list of upgrades.

Ah the wait and see principle. Fair enough, only been playing France 1796 for some years but haven't seen any of those pop-ups yet.

Build barracks and culture and you'll see some pop-ups.

edit: Starting on about page 74 in the manual and you'll find what each upgrade from the list does.

Ralegh, are you sure the number of provinces has a bearing on waste? To me, it seems to be purely a function of total production with each commodity having a predefined level of waste beyond an initial threshhold.

Then you can have 20 provinces with barracks(10) and culture(10) and you again get 60 upgrades.

Or 40 with barracks(8) and culture(5).

I am doing some more maths now to see what is the cost in labor and turns to get all the upgrades.

Something I dont like about this formula. It punishes your upgrade rate if you attack and conquer low developed provinces, as it brings your score down. It makes no sense that the research (upgrade) rate slows if you for instance capture a province in Africa.

Before I always ceded teretory that made geographic sense, expending my borders outward, but if this will slow my upgrade rate I will have to pick only provinces that have high barack and culture developement, making for a really strange map.

Is there any other way this could be done, so that you are not so reluctend to capture low developed provinces.

Hi, The best way to upgrade your Army is raise the training levels of your drafts (max's out at 20 months) Then give them a good leader.
Then find an Ally with a big Army and after they have the enemy on the ropes move your Army in with them.

How about a description of each upgrade next to the appropriate upgrade in the game.Maybe in a future patch.
