Okay, I broke down and loaded the pdfs onto my laptop to try this and have the manual usable. Not ideal, needing two computers to play it, but...

This is a very deep game with a lot of detail. I look forward to diving into it deeper.

(My disappointment with the fact that you can't minimize, alt-tab, play it windowed, save in battle, or exit without crashing still stands).

Apparently, Alt-Tab is working on some computers and not on others. When we return from Origins, Eric will be looking into these reports.

I pressed the button with a microsoft-windows logo, a bar coming up at the bottom of the screen from which I could choose to go to the adobe reader for the pdf.

I am one of the unlucky ones for whom it does not work. This is particularly annoying to me since I realize what it takes to honor this request (and I do it in all of my programs (even the DirectX ones)).

Having said that, I am glad that I didn't give up on it. There is a very good game here.

I get the bar, but everything there quickly becomes nonfunctional.

Just to say that while the Windows button "solutions" didn't work for me either, the one suggested by Nukkxx did.

He said

"
1) I close all useless prgrams like ICQ, MSN to free a max of memory
2) lauch tutotial manual in a window but not full size (not sure whether it's important but I tell you exactly what I do)
3) start the game with "quick start"
4) esc to skip intro scenes
5) load the scenario
6) launch the game
7) when the strategic map shows-up choose "end game" from "game menu"
8) answer "yes, exit"
9) a window with optins like "save game" etc show up. click on "cancel" in the bottom and you are back at the main game menu.

from now alt.tab should be working (with the manual which runs in background).

10) load again the game and play

This time alt.tab works... "

I doubt "1" is necessary unless you are running close to the specs needed. It works, for me and a couple of others anyway. I don't think anyone posted that it didn't work, in fact. Give it a go, anyway.

Just for funzies has anyone tried pressing ALT + ENTER? This was another way like ALT + TAB used by Everquest. Just a thought, probably won't work. ;)

Okay, I'll post that it doesn't work. No luck for me.

Warpstorm, when you try any of the suggested fixes, do you ever see the taskbar, even momemtarily?

The really strange thing is that in all of the versions up until the release version, I had no trouble alt-tabbing out. Now, in the relase version I can do it. Odd.

Sure do, just can't select anything.
