I have a systematic freeze if I change hex details to on, do some moves, then change hex details to off.

Anyone else ?

I have had perhaps a dozen freezes on 1.6, and I frequently turn hex details on and off. Haven't figured out a cause and effect relationship, however. My unquantitative sense is that I have a bigger problem with 1.6 than previous versions.

In the "freeze", WitP is using 100% of the CPU, so I'm guessing it's some kind of infinite loop. When killing the process, is there a way to get a traceback of the procedure call stack? Would seem like that would allow Mike to zero in on possible causes fairly readily.

You need to download current drivers for your video card from the cards manufacturer.
The Windows generic drivers are garbage.

In my experience WitP is always using 100% of the processor capacity. It's especially noticeably on my laptop with the fan running full speed and as soon as I switch to the desktop or another program it quitens down. Think somebody mentioned this just recently also.

WITP always sucks up 100% of the CPU.
Better drivers will allow you to scroll the map faster.
Reset the scroll speed to 0 on the preference screen.
It will help.

I hear what you and BPRE say about the CPU use, but in my experience the CPU use during order entry is minimal. For example, I just loaded a PBEM, then brought up task manager. Once everything swapped, machine CPU usage is around 5% and WitP showed 0.

Note that both JP and I are experiencing freezes during the order entry phase, not turn execution. At least in my case, the interface freezes and even after I go to the task manager it's still using 100% of the CPU; when the interface is not frozen, the CPU usage is no higher than some nominal amount.

The only other time that I've seen a freeze up is when background programs start up on me. Maybe Mr Frag can diagnose this one for ya.

Bad video/sound drivers.

Rename sound directory to nosound and see if problem goes away. If not, concentrate on video drivers next.

WitP never locks up unless it's a machine problem. It made crash to desktop due to a bug, but that is a crash with a nice error message, not a lockup.

90% of all machine related problems always get blamed on the software yet it has nothing to do with the software.

Could be drivers, bad memory, heat problems, lots of stuff. One of the guys here had a problem because his video software drivers automatically overclocked his video and due to WitP using large BMP files for the maps, it was pushing him into overtemp/lockup.

I'll never say there are no bugs, but these is a vast difference between a bug in software that makes the program crash and a problem with your basic machine.

Over the years in many different forums, there is always a good 20% of folks who always complain about the software (any software) due to problems with their machines yet it is never the software.

Good luck kicking your machine into working order. It is a never ending process of driver hunting. Sometimes I swear we would all be better off if Apple had won the PC wars ... you don't ever read about these kinds of problems with their stuff as they are all made the same. Same reason so many companies have switch over to consoles. You write it for one, it works on ever single one of them identically as they are all the same.

For what it's worth, I don't use hexes or hexside details when playing. It seems to slow down the scrolling on the map and the game as a whole. Besides, with hexes off, you get a better look at the map.

Just so you know, hex vs nohex maps makes no difference, it just switches which maps get used.

Any of the overlays (hexsides, roads, hex type, weather, etc) impose a large performance penalty when scrolling around as they are all drawn on top of the map.
