DirectX 8.1 has been released for update and is the current version of DirectX for Windows XP. There are some reports that it may be causing some problems with SPWAW. Check out http://www.matrixgames.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=007560

Dix 8.0 works fine too but 8.1 is bugger.

From what I've seen, it is NOT a ggod idea to upgrade to Dx 8.1 if you are not running XP or WIN 2K. Lots of problems with DX 8.1 and WIN 9x/ME IF you are running non-NT kernal windows I would stick with Dx 8.0

What sounds way reasonable Paul. AFAIK Dx8.1 was especially developed for XP and NT Kernel (spell W2000 not NT SP4) OS´s. It runs under WinX and WinME platforms for some games, but not for every game.

With the exception of me running Windows 2000 Professional and not having a problem until I upgraded to DX8.1 from DX8.0. But, its not a problem. I work around it. And I will soon roll my systems back to DX8.0

I haven't done the upgrade to 8.1 yet for obvious reasons. I have noticed a few posts here about "rolling back" DX8.1 to an earlier version. I thought the changes made by any DX upgrade are not reversible. Am I wrong? System Reload != Reversible

You can reverse an DirectX update with the "DirectX Buster" tool. http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html
