Hi, I am really wishing to play some old games like SP2, Tanks!, Clash of Steel and so on. The bad thing is, they all aks for EMS-Memory which my WIN98 does not give them (at least I don´t know how to). When right clicking on the executables to get a link to DOS-mode it still doesn´t work. Can ANYONE help me??? PLEASE!!!
Even creating a boot disk with Aces over Europe install did not work. Why???
Chris

Hm.....actually the link file (*.lnk) should give you the opportunity to configure most DOS games working on WIN98 systems!? Try making a link file to the DOS executables of the games and edit the stuff on the properties page.... Just yesterday I managed to get SPIII working this way on my WIN98 system. _________

Yes I know this, but I just don´t quite know how to do it any more! Could you please help me? As far as I know there is no such a thing as emm386.exe in WIN (?), and last not least I forgot the commands to employ it.
Du schreibst du bist aus D, vielleicht kannst du mri in D weiterhelfen, da geht es vielleicht besser :-)

The easiest way I can tell you is to go to the windows folder and look for a .pif file called "MS-DOS Mode for Games with EMS and XMS Support". You can modify the .pif file that you are clicking on for the game by right cliking on it and then left clicking on Properties, click on the Programs tab then click on the Advanced button at the bottom of the window. Follow those same steps for the MS-Dos Mode for Games .pif file and then copy the settings from that one to the game .pif you are modifying.

Thanx the two of you. I tried Mustangs idea, it worked quite nicely first. But when adding MSCDEX (loaded high), I only haf 545k of conventional Ram left, which is simply not enough. I have not even loaded a mouse driver! What can I do to free more conventional RAM, there is nothing loaded besides the CD-Driver MSCDEX and an OAK ATAPI CD-ROM driver. Any suggestions?

In autoexec.bat on the "LH mscdex" line, at the end of that line put a space then "/e". This switch loads the cd driver in expanded memory. Make sure you load the mouse.sys or mouse.com in high memory too.

Mustang, could I ask you to take at look at my similar post on the Pacific War: Matrix forum? I am also running Win98 with 589K of conv mem. PACWAR works but I would like to be able to change my carrier planes without the out of mem message showing up. My longer post on the other forum goes into the things I tried to do last night...early this morning. Starting content of autoexec.bat: SET BLASTER=A220, etc
SET SBPCI=C:.....
LH MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /V /E Starting conent of config.sys: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE AUTO RAM MIN=0
DOS=HIGH, UMB
STACKS=0,0
SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:1024 /P
DEVICE=C:\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001 Thanks, RayM

Mustang, I re-read the thread and I am now looking into the "find and copy MS-DOS for Games and EMS content and paste into PACWAR PIF" approach. Ray

I modified the .PIF for PACWAR as follows: In Config.sys window DOS=HIGH,UMB
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 4096 RAM
DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.sys /D:MSCD001 In Autoexecd.bat window SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
SET SBPCI=C:\SBPCI
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P330 T6
LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001
Results: CD drive is available. Game runs fine. I can change carrier a/c; no out of mem message. However, still no mouse. I know I need to add lines to load it. I have been looking in system.ini as well as searching on *mouse* and I found a number of files to look at. I know I need to add lines related to mouse.sys or mouse.com. I'm close but no luck yet. Any suggestions? Ray

Victory at last! I finally was able to generate 600K+ free memory and I can now change carrier a/c without getting an OOM message. CD drive and mouse continue to work as usual. And this was accomplished with just minor tweeks to my autoexec.bat and config.sys. As usual, I started PACWAR via the default shortcut icon added to the Desktop. The final fix was that I loaded several big mem hogs into upper memory. My final MEM results were: ITEM CONV UPPER SYSTEM 10,880 5,184
HIMEM 1,168 0
EMM386 4,320 0
VIDE-CDD 5,024 0
DBLBUFF 2,976 0
WIN 3,696 0
VMM32 672 3,856
IFSHLP 0 2,864
MSCDEX 0 15,792
FREE 626,416 It can be done!

RayM,
The only thing i saw that you would want to change is in your config.sys file. The line Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys should be the first line and then the emm386.exe line, and then the DOS=HIGH,UMB line. Glad you got things working.
