Well, I took some of my matrix pay today and went out and bought another lcd monitor.

I had been thinking of it for a while but never really saw THAT much of a advantage for it.

Oh MAN was I wrong!!

This is so beyond cool, I can load max up, and FILL the other monitor with ALL The tools and just have the views in expert mode on the main screen!! so freaking cool!!

And in photoshop you can basically do the same with one monitor just being your texture and the other holding all your tools.

Oh man am I glad I did this, I have to suggest that any artists out there even if you dabble in it grab another mon! sooo cool!!

I use a dual set up since 4 years now I guess .

The first thing to buy though for an artist is a hardware calibration tool for your monitor. That´s even more important then a dual setup.

You should spent the money on something even more usefull. A Wacom Intuos3 tablet. Or hardware monitor calibration .

I actually had a tablet, freaking hated it, probably was using it wrong tho.

I am looking into a calibration system tho.

A tablet needs time and partice, but after a few weeks it will boost your speed and skills.

A third monitor would be wasted money for an artist. Better get a decent Digital SLR for the money. Nothing like shooting your own textures

Thats all I need to hear, I will look into it and get back to you when I have some potentials.

I finally got everthing working 100% today, did about 8 hours of project work and I have to say that second monitor REALLY helps a lot, when I'm doing heavy 3d work I move ALL The max tools to the second monitor, that way I just have one monitor that is nothing but mesh!!

Same for when I do photoshop

for the final touchups I run max in one screen and photoshop in the other so I can quickly see the saved changes to the textures... very sweet man.. oh so ver sweet.

What is a Digital SLR?

LOL this reminds me of how I got My 17" LCD. I was going to my local comp store to buy a 19" CTR(or is it CRT?) for $100 when I saw this guy walk out of the store with a 17" LCD. He was carrying it in a briefcase size box with no effort what so ever. I pulled out an extra $100 on the spot and bought my LCD. The feeling of carrying a monitor for the first time with no effort cannnot be described in words

What is a Digital SLR?

A Digital Single Lens Reflex camera. Like the Canon EOS 350 D (just to name an entry level model), which I can higly recommend.

for the right role, multiple screens are better than one big screen

with my two monitors i code on one and have documentation on the other, for debugging i have the app on one and the debugger still in view on the other, so there is much less alt-tabbing between apps etc

a bloke at work does PCB layouts over 3 monitors
the centre and largest screen is the layout
left hand screen has all the analysis of the layout
right hand screen has email and explorer and web

there is no need to hunt for toolbars or windows when you need them, so it is a very cost effective performance improvement.

the secondary or tertiary monitors do not have to be the same size so you can put an older monitor to good use

for image editing i would prefer to have a bigger screen

Ah, it seems that Damo has got new job. Looks like his work with Starshatter modding got him some name. This reminds me about one similiar event.

There is Star Wars mod for RTS game Total Annihilation called Star Wars: Total Annihilation (SWTA for short). One of the mod designers got job as professional game designer/coder/something like that. Rumor says when he went to job interview, interviewer was playing SWTA.

almost all of our artists are "ex"-modders. Including me
