I was planning on purchasing War in the Pacific and wanted to know the difference between downloading online (I have cable connection) and the physical shipment of the game. Which one is better....do you get anything more having it physically shipped?

Also for those of you that have the game, what is your opinion of it?

There's no real difference between down load or boxed appart from the fact you get a Jewel case, and the fact with the download you could be playing today not some time next week when it finally arrivies.

As for the game, if you know your Pac history, and have a grasp of the capabilites of the naval and air units you'll have a blast. Be prepared to give up most of your free time! The inital learning curve is massive but once you get to grips with the control and comand systems you'll have years of fun with the game. If you have any problem or need advice there is a great and very Knowledgeable community here who will always help.

It really is an excellent game, but like Bob said, it'll eat A LOT of your time, so be prepared for that. And you really should get it via direct download.

If you have a CD burner, you can copy the download.
If you don't, a backup hard copy is nice to have around.

"Goes without saying", but may be dangerous... even "catastrophic". Your hard disk may die in one hour, tomorrow or god only knows. Have a physical copy. Always. Always. Always. Or learn the hard way So if you don't have a burner buy (if you can) the CD as well. I have a burner but choosed download + CD. Paranoia, I know. Just in case. I always was waiting for this game. Now I need War in Russia. Then I'll may die and rest in peace. Amen

Goes without saying that backups are always nice, is what I meant. And why you want to die after getting the new War in Russia? Seems you should play it a while first...

I didn't find the learning curve to be anywhere near as bad as I expected.

Granted, I'm sure I'm not very good, and many of my moves turn out to be historical (i.e. disastrous learning experiences), but still not as bad as I expected.

Supply, loading troops, handling CVs and their aircraft all come pretty quickly in the tutorial. The tutorial took me a good 90 minute just to get through the parts where I execute the given orders, but once you're done you get the gist of the orders system.

You can be "playing" the game and having fun pretty quickly, though I'd leave Tarawa alone.

Gotta agree; the initial learning curve isn't THAT bad, although that might come from my previous experience with the original Pacific War. It's getting all the little tricks right that takes some time.

Terminus, to me backups are necessary, essential. Believe me, I have lost some nice software because I did not follow this simple rule

Griswel, the game is indeed complex, but don't worry, not that hard. And once you get the "spirit", everything is automatic. Stay organised though. You will avoid the chaos

Two or one year? Anyway, nothing is eternal. Matrix might move into the Twilight Zone

Yeah if your hardrive where to die, you would be able to redownload the game again, and ask your PBEM partners to resend turns.

Keep your serial number handy on a notepad somewhere though, infact im gonna write down mine somewhere now, this threads made me all paranoid.

Suggest you write it on the CD with a Sharpie or similar fine point permanent marker.
