I think I have a handle on the editor. I am an old Pacwar fan, does anyone know if and how you can edit a saved game?

You can't. It's to prevent cheating.

If you are playing solo is it still cheating?

The problem is that there aren't two types of save games, one for playing against the AI and one for PBEM. So protecting the PBEM saves have to take precedence.

Yes, and you will also go blind.

This brings on another question that has bothered me.

Is it ok if you talk to yourself? What if you argue with yourself? What if you lose?

It would be nice to edit a saved game into a scenerio only set of files. Doing the first turn over and over to test is a bear and unneccesary. The only way someone could cheat with scenerio files in PBEM is if they already can anyway.

I am nearly finished with my excel editor (like the one I did for WiR and Rich Dionne did for PacWar) and would've finshed long ago if I could've saved my first turn into a scenerio file.

Hi Michael,

Your editor sounds interesting, any more details?

Hi Michael,

It is ideally suited for mass editing. At present, I have completed the following: Devices, Bases, LCUs, Aircraft, Air Groups, TFs, Ship Classes, Jap Ships, Leaders, Production Summary, Total Force Summary and several informational add-ins. I still need to do the Allied ships and fix a newly discovered bug in the Delay and Supply columns for Jap LCUs. I won't be doing anything for pilots.

The editor requires Excel and once you enter the paths to the files, you will only need to click buttons to open the files and save them. In a nutshell, I can sort, copy and paste individual changes or thousands in a matter of seconds. Because it uses Excel, I get the added benefit of seeing the effects of the changes immediately (ie. current support in a unit vs. the required support for it).

Once I figure out the address to my web space, I will post a link to what is complete. It isn't pretty, but it is powerful.

Regards,

Michael Fleshman

Hi Michael,

I remember with Rich's pacwar xls editor that there were still some hardwires to be careful of, e.g.

1) carrier air hardwire slots;

2) the need to change ship icons in te scenario file as well as the save game file because the game seemed to reset them each turn;

3) certain air slots like that of the P51 having a hardwired range upgrade in late 44 or so

Have you found any of those sort of things yet?

I suppose anything like (2) goes because only the scenario and data files are available for editing.

At this point even a facility for dumnping saves into a csv file a la SPedit and then creating a new scenario to restart a solo game with would be good.

There are numerous considerations and while I can't list them all as I am still discovering new ones, I have removed the ability to edit some items and others I color code the cells and include notes. Some examples follow.
1. LCUs cannot actually use all 20 item slots.
2. The AI redirects some Human controlled units after sorting the LCUs. I am exploring this today. Since it seems to be in the 1700's, I am hoping to isolate th cause and determine if it is fixable or a restriction to sorting.
3. Some delays appear to be hardwired as do supply levels. Although I am not certain if this is the case yet.
4. Aircraft will not use Depth Charges :)
5. Any LCU can be made into Abn (I noticed that question a few times in these forums)
6. I can't find any other slots than those originally assigned as Support in Devices that can serve as alternative Support
7. Of course there are the off limts locations for partisans, militias, atomic bombs etc..
8. The Bitmaps are editable, but I have not included them in my editor since there are other editors (including the one in the game) that already provide the means to edit items on an individualized basis.
9. The biggest constraints to non-historical design are in the number of slots for each data type. There is a finite number of possible pilots, for example.

Regards,

Michael Fleshman
