CHS with the extended map and version 1.60. Let the games begin!

After reading all sorts of posts by Japanese players whose Kates refused to use torpedoes at Pearl Harbor (and seeing much the same myself, in my AI games), my PBEM experience gets off to a very different start.

Yes, I think I'll be feeling that pain for quite some time to come. Suffice to say that Battleship Row is going to be known as Salvage Alley for a good long while. On the other hand, the airfield's in pretty good shape (too bad my aircraft are nearly all obsolete).

In other news, Manila got similar treatment (to a lesser extent):
quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 36
G3M Nell x 54
Ki-46-II Dinah x 2

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 5

SS Spearfish, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AO Trinity, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AS Holland, Bomb hits 1
AVD Childs, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

And oh, 30 some amphibious invasions were landed from the Philippines to Amboina. (That may be a slight exaggeration, but then again it may not be.) There were stray surface combats across the Pacific, the Asiatic Fleet's cruisers are all in trouble of one sort or another, and Corsairs are more than a year away.

All in all, a bloody, bloody start to the war, but that will only make revenge that much sweeter when it comes. Remember Turn 1!

Admiral Derfel-san is on R&R at the moment, so I'll post a few updates on the first week of the war. The interesting thing about the Pearl Harbor raid I posted above is the way that the damage control efforts played out. The WeeVee, reported hit by 9 torpedoes, suffered some severe floatation damage but almost no sys damage. She stayed afloat, and by the time she was pumped out, she was actually the least damaged of the USN BBs. Details remain classified, but three BBs (plus the Utah) were reported sunk at Pearl.

Here are the remaining highlights from Day 1's results:

quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conquests across the map:

Japanese forces CAPTURE Batan Islands base !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Tarawa base !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Guiuan base !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Aparri base !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Legaspi base !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Puerto Princesa base !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Laoag base !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE San Jose base !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No surprises at Wake, thanks to the bombardment:

Ground combat at Wake Island

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 1163 troops, 12 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 2642 troops, 46 guns, 9 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Wake Island base !!!

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-3 Wildcat: 6 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
139 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Allied ground losses:
2319 casualties reported
Guns lost 47

Day 2 of the war was also a bad one for me, as Lexington blunders into KB's path and pays for it. Ah well; from now on when I play the Allies in unhistorical starts, I'm going to insist on the right to move my CV TFs to some out of the way location on turn 1. Meanwhile in the United States, another Essex class CV is laid down.

Further west, Asiatic Fleet HQ orders all ships to make a run for it:

quote:

FLASH 08 DEC 1941

FR CINC Asiatic Fleet
TO All Asiatic Fleet Units

1. STATE OF WAR EXISTS BETWEEN UNITED STATES AND JAPAN.

2. EXECUTE OPERATION BRAVE SIR ROBIN.

3. GODSPEED (YOU'LL NEED IT).

Incredibly, the Lexington remained afloat after getting pounded on the 8th. That wasn't to last, unfortunately, but at least she soaked up a few more of KB's sortie points. Elsewhere, Derfel's assault raged on.

More of the same on December 10th.

(For the sake of space and something like brevity, I'm omitting things like the ongoing slaughter of merchantmen fleeing from Manila, but don't think that means that it hasn't been happening.)

The 12th finds me still reeling under Derfel's world-wide attack. I'm trying to scrape together some combat forces that will allow me at least to slow him down here and there, but there just isn't much on the shelf at the moment, and he has advanced so rapidly through the SRA that those forces I do have are mostly out of position.

The Second Battle of Pearl Harbor plays out very differently than the first one. Part of KB attempts another port attack against Pearl, but the Zeros don't come along for escort. My P-40s prove that they're not entirely useless by taking a heavy toll on KB's bomber pilots. "Great Hawaiian Turkey Shoot" would be a bit of an exaggeration, but this turn's events are pretty much the first reason for optimism in the Allied camp.

KB heads west, licking its wounds and counting the empty bunks in flight quarters. Its ships are pretty much untouched but the bomber crews that bought it yesterday won't be easily replaced. Meanwhile the Enterprise and Saratoga will soon be joined by the Yorktown. We're a far way from being able to establish air or naval superiority, but at least the Allied CVs will soon be a force that Japan must reckon with.

For the most part, the slaughter of merchies running from Manila is over, and it was a bloody, bloody mess. A fair number of them made it out to Java and other places of relative safety, but Derfel-san will be pretty happy with the havoc his forces have wreaked in that area, I believe.

Derfel-san has returned from shore leave, and we're back at it.

As KB continues to withdraw to the west (under the watchful eyes of USN Catalinas), the IJA continues its drive into Malaya. Meanwhile, most of my shipping has now made it to semi-sensible positions, so I can begin to hope that the wholesale slaughter of unescorted ships is coming to an end.
