Hi Chaps,

In reading some of the AARs and my own experiences, I'm beginning to think that when you take a base with assets on it by shock attack, then some/many of the assets get damaged. Even when a base has no enemy troops there and you para-drop the base is sometimes trashed. Many Japs have para-attacked Miri only to see that the natives have stuffed bananas where they shouldn't be. Other sites taken by paras have found similar evidence too. And when regular enemy troops have been forced to retreat with deliberate attack the assets seem to be in better condition than when a shock has taken another base with similar enemy troops numbers. I know that enemy engineers are able to demo the assets when they are forced to retreat, but has I said I have seen many bases with no enemies and still they are busted.

Also, do you think that when the computer counts up the number of enemy engineers in a base that is just captured that disabled engineers are added in the total? Some bases have been bombed and thoroughly prepared for capture only to see that assets wrecked again. When you look at the bottom left corner of the base screen, where it says engineers and engineer vehicles, it counts disabled squad too. So maybe when you take the base the computer is counting them when the base gets captured?

Thanks

Frankly, I think it's a crap shoot.

In theory, the more engineers, with less disablements, high morale, low disruption/fatigue, more prep, will mean that you trash the place more.

However, I've seen extremely varied results. I had a single Dutch BF at Palembang. I had better uses for them, than just stacking all the ENG units in the SRA than sending them all to Pal (and I think it borders on gamey to do that anyways). I figured when Pal fell, it would be mostly intact. That's fine, I don't really care -that- much.

So my PBEM opponenent did everything right, by the book.

Bombed the snot out of the place.
Bombarded the place with 6x BBs + CAs all the time.
Landed troops, and bombarded them some more.

Pal defenders basically go pounded for about a month.

When he -did- capture the base, only 220 oil production facilities survived (500 or so destroyed). I rechecked the turn, that unit -was- pretty shot up. High fatigue, disruption. Only about 8 ENG squads left. But they totally sacked the place.

On the other hand, I've seen where there were 4+ ENG units in the hex, and the place was almost entirely intact after it fell.

I think it's a crap-shoot (and not worth it to stack ENGs, but to each his own).

-F-

According to Mr. Frag, the bases can and often are sabotaged by civilians. He mentioned one of his experiences (iirc) where he marched into Palembang unopposed, and civilians torched the place - destroying 1/2 of the oil producing facilities.

As far as DISABLED engineers being able to blow things up - this has not been my experience. Recently, had something like 15 engineering BNs (or large elements of the units) in Palembang, but by the time the enemy assaulted, most of the engineers were disabled. I did do some damage before they left, but much less damage than a few INTACT engineer LCUs managed to inflict on a different base.

EDIT - apparently, according to Feinder, some of this is from the "crap shoot" effect. Perhaps, but i think the odds are somewhat better to destroy a facility the more intact ENGs are around.

My own experience as a Japanese player is that what matters when you take a is the number of Japanese engineers more present rather than the number of defenders. I don't storm any big ressource/oils base but will besiege and pound them for days before attacking with at least one ENG Rgt and if possible more ENG units (Const Bns coming to mind). By using this method I have never seen big bases wrecked when I took them. By the way at day one my Eng Rgts prepare for Palembang and other sites.

Fine. Iwas just thinking out loud. I have seen many empty bases fall and still the assets are wrecked. And the para-drop on Miri is an example that most games would experience and the bases gets fried every time. Where as all the Malayan and Philippine resources sites that are abandoned by the Allies and captured by the Japs using deliberate attack seem to be undamaged when taken. Must stop reading books with conspiracies in them.

Thanks

I guess when the Japs take a base using their paras there isn't any engineers. But when they take the sites with deliberately attacking division- they have some engineers?

Thanks again

Well I have to go. This is the first thread I started in months that hasn't been moved somewhere else. So don't mess it up with idle chit-chat.
