hi COG fans!

i have some great times playing WAW and i got more games to come. to me, WAW is a great game!!

i just wonder whether COG suits me as well. i know they are diff but i recalled that i have played a similar game about Napoleon in the late 80's (but cant really remember the name ... just remember that Admiral Nelson is scripted to be killed in the first sea battle in the english channel with france ...) and i liked that game a lot by then.

as i can see the name of certain WAW ppl in this forum as well, any advice?

cheers,
AN

I own both and in my opinion, CoG is a better game than WaW. I personally like the subtleties that are more prevalent in CoG and to me the multi-polar dimensions of the game produce a far more interesting dynamic than the simple "us vs them" mentality of WWII. You can play with or without the detailed battles, but I find them to be a lot of fun and really add something overall. Anyway, I would encourage you to try CoG. If you like turn based strategy games (as it appears you do), then I think this is one of the better titles I have seen in quite some time. And with the soon to be released patch, it promises to be even better.

LOL
to be honest, there are a number of things in COG, that would look very nice in WAW

heck, the econ model would even be welcomed

I keep trying to like games like WAW and Strategic Command but the whole limited paradigm of WW2 just doesn't give you much variety in how to play...you need to do certain things or else. I've liked HOI and HOI2 at times just because I can play minors all over the world and try different things.

I really like COG, especially multi...I love grand strategic games....I never play the detailed battles, no desire.

Lets put the two games in perspective.

World At War was meant to be played like a table top game, not a computer game, so the economic model, combat engine, movement system are all geared to replicating the playing of a board game feeling. As such it will play very differently from COG. I think World At War is a great game taken in this perspective. It plays well, works great in PBEM, and is fun. The strategies may seem more defined, but I think in any given game there are probable 5-6 sound strategies that the Axis can employ to win. The game is also a you move, I move game so you get punished for your mistakes more easily. There is nothing wrong with this type of game.

Crown Of Glory is a different era, was not designed to replicate a board game, takes advantage of what you can do with a computer. As a result we have a complex economic model, a couple of ways to execute combat, and initiative based movement system. The turn structure is we go, that is everyone orders their units and then movement and combat happen after the orders are given. In this model you are not as easily punished by your opponent, if you make a mistake, as you do not know what he is doing and he can only react after the fact. This model lets you run around in someone's land forever if you can manage to avoid battle. This game is about anticipating what your opponent will do, not about reacting to what he did do.

They are very different games and as such I think you can not compare them. You can determine which one you like better, what era is more appealing to you, and which model of movement more suits you play style. Both games favor those who plan a head and have a good long term strategy.

I enjoy both games, but I will admit that there is more appeal to Napoleonics for me than to World War II. This has a lot to do with the lack of games on Napoleonics in comparison to games about World War II. I also love the detailed combat in COG as it takes me back to my miniature gaming roots.

Based on that each personn will need to make there own decision. I do think both are worth the buy though as I have PBEM game in both going and enjoy both.

Oh, I should mention that I do beta testing for World At War.
