I am playing MCLV and just got to the scenario "If at first you do not succeed" (Assaulting the istmas leading to the Crimea).

One of my tanks got within 2 hexes of a Soviet scout team and got hit by a molotov. I looked at the now spotted scout tean and saw that it had something called a "Molotov Projector".

Anyone know what this is? I have never heard of it before. Nastly little weapon.

Woah--this weapon DOES exist in the 8.3 OOBs, but I can't find any units that were equipped with them. Hmm--was this weapon a designer tool? Probably.

Alternatively, it could have been a failed weapon project. Other nations have had these, too, such as the US Army's stupid attempt at a shoulder-fired mortar -- the bazooka filled this need nicely.

It is a molotov with some sort of launcher, the Soviets have it early in the war, 1941-42
there is a whole thread on it here

Not a designer choice. I presume it is a molotov cocktail launched from something like the Brit PIAT.

.

I am running 8.4 and it is a Soviet Scout Team that is armed with the projector. Haven't checked the OOB to see if this is a custom unit for MCLV or not.

I think that the NorthOver Projector was given to the Home Guard units, only, and it never went to battlefield.

It would be nice to find out how that works in practice. Finns did not need projectors, just some wit like: "I bet ten marks that you cannot smash this bottle onto that tank engine."

"W-what? Sure I can."

http://www.home-guard.org.uk/northover.html

It was meant to fire a Mk 76 grenade, with a similar action to a modern-day grenade launcher. I was only able to find one reference to it having been used with Molotovs, with, as the page put it, "predictable (i.e. negative) consequences for the crew".

The Soviets had a weapon called an Ampulomet, which was designed to fire Molotovs. I'm digging for information on it now.

Here it is.

The following text is from the site where I found this picture. It's originally in Russian, so I ran it through Babelfish:

primitive ampulomet, prepared in blockade Leningrad. It is found in Lake region. Lordly during November 1994 below: regular 120- mm ampulomet, naydenyy on the "Neva five-kopeck coin", in 1 km from st. of apraksin. This type of weapon is accepted to the armament BY RKKA - WORKERS' AND PEASANTS' RED ARMY at the end of the 30th it is annual. It were established on the machine tool, it shot with the aid of the blank cartridge from the signal pistol thick-walled 1- cm by glass spheres with samovosplamyanyayushcheysya ognesmes'yu on the basis of white phosphorus, analogous to liquid in the bottles "KS".

Thanks. I can't see this beeing too accurate. Looks like it would be as deadly to it's crew as anything they shot at it with.

"Ok comrade, you load the tube with gun powder and I will put the fragile glass bottle full of burning gasoline into the tube and.....BOOM....Ouch!"

Since this particular one was found near Leningrad, I have an idea that it might have been a primitive stopgap weapon meant for militia units. Those were expendable anyway...

The Bablefish translation sounds like the directions I have been given for assembling furniture.

Here are the lyrics to one of my favorite commercials that addresses this topic:

Mr. Furniture Assembly Manual Writer

Bud Light Presents Real Men of Genius
(Real Men of Genius)

Today, we salute you, Mr. Furniture Assembly Manual Writer
(Mr. Furniture Assembly Manual Writer)
Thanks to you, people everywhere can simply purchase furniture,
drive it home, open a box, and go completely insane.
(Driving me crazy)
Knowing we can't read Chineese, Dutch, or German,
you thoughtfully include pictures.
Pictures that look nothing like the item purchased.
(No spreakinze Dutch now)
Insert piece A into slot B, put C into hole D
Then curse, cry and smash with hammer.
(Oh no!)

So, crack open an ice cold budlight oh maestro of the manual,
You make it so simple, a monkey could do it.
A rocket scientist monkey.
(That's one smart monkey)

Translated from Japanese into English by a blind, illiterate North Korean rice farmer, who doesn't speak either language...

I don't like the product but I love their commercials.

My two alltime favorites are:

MR. BACKYARD BUG ZAPPER INVENTOR

Bud Light Presents Real Men of Genius
(Real Men of Genius)

This 4th of July we salute you Mr. Backyard Bug Zapper Inventor
(Mr. Backyard Bug Zapper Inventor)
Not content to harmlessly repel insects with lotion, you discovered a way to fry them with electricity until their bodies explode
(Zap! Ka-boom!)
Ah, the sounds of summer... Crickets chirping, birds singing, the blood curdling scream of a moth having 700 volts of electricity shoot through it's body.
(Music to my ears)
Every night, a magical explosion of exoskeleton and insect goo that can only mean one thing.. summer's here
(Die bugs die)
So crack open an ice cold Bud Light Mr. June Bug Blaster
Then sit back and watch the fireworks
(Mr. Backyard Bug Zapper Inventor)

and

MR. GASOLINE BBQ STARTER

Bud Light Presents Real Men of Genius
(Real Men of Genius)

This Memorial Day we salute you Mr. Gasoline BBQ Starter
(Mr. Gasoline BBQ Starter)
Never mind charcoal chimneys, and easy lighting briquettes. The only way to start a real BBQ is with a gallon of 93 octane and a big book of matches
(Light up the sky)
Who needs eyebrows? You're hungry and you've got 7 pounds of lamb shanks ready to go
(That's a lot of kabobs)
You don't just defy convention, you defy warning labels, and common sense
(Very low I.Q.)
So crack open an ice cold Bud Light O' Prince of the Pyrotechnic, because no one makes a backyard mushroom cloud like you do
(Mr. Gasoline BBQ Starter)

As you can see I have much to much free time at work to find these things on the internet.

To Terminus: I really appreciate the great info you're posting -- for a brief moment, I thought a Molotov Projector might be a tool for a movie critic -- "wanna see me flame this waste of film? Well, here ya go -- "

No problem, Gunny, I like finding this stuff.

As far as I can deduce from the gobbledegook produced by Babel Fish, this thing was based on an industrial machine tool, and fired thick-walled glass balls (ampoules, hence "Ampulomet") filled with White Phosphorous, launched by blank flare gun ammunition. Sounds like a very expensive, and needlessly complicated way to cause serious injury to your own men!

Haven't you guys played Advanced Squad Leader?

The molotov projector was used by the Soviets in 1942-43 and then discarded. It was not recoilless. The US Army refered to it as a low-trajectory mortar for firng incendiary ampules at AFV. It was smooth-bore and muzzle-loaded. Its use was not widespread but during 42/43 at leat some rifle battalions contained one molotov projector platoon of 2-4 weapons. Photographic evidence suggests it was used in Stalingrad.

Also if you played Combat Mission- Barbarossa to Berlin the molotov projector also appears in the Russian OoB.
