Well, use them wisely! You can use them normally as land based airgroup or move them later to another carrier (e.g. to rotate groups during heavy combat).

Be aware that those groups may only fragments of the original group. They don´t get any replacements and after being completly fought up they vanish.

Each group should have assumed a parent designation somewhere.

Depending on the size of the airgroup fragments you could try to disband them into airgroups on other carriers, especially if they have taken losses. It will keep the experience level up as you won't be using 'green' replacements from the pilot pool.

It seems to me that air groups lost aboard ships return after some months. But that may apply only to groups crated and carried by AKs (?). I have not yet lost an airgroup in WITP (except in test games vs AI) and can't be sure.

The airgroups that I lost were stationed on carriers. Fragments diverted to other carriers or bases. They stayed fragments and the parent unit never showed up on the air unit reinforcements screen or in game again.

Planes on an AK that is sunk return in 180 days, and I am pretty sure this subject to the "variability" setting for the game; had some Dutch groups that tried to escape and got sunk in the Bali/Lombok area, they came back in under 180 days in SF....go figure.
As to CV groups, if it is an eligible American "replacement" carrier, the lost group is on the replacement ship; anything on the "board" still is a fragment by definition. Best to just disband it into a like group in my opinion. Any other CV group I think defaults to fragment, as the carrier groups are assigned to specific carriers in the DB. I might be incorrect on this, as I don't have any first hand experience with this yet.

you can only disband them if another group with the same type of aircraft is stationed at the base

If you have a suadron on a carrier that is under strength, transfer the fragment to that carrier then disband it. It has worked for me - but took a couple of attempts - think i had to disband the cariier in port for it to work. Such are the vagaries and strange happenings in this game
