NZ is having their federal polls today. Meant to be a real cliffhanger. Promised tax cuts by the opposition -v- life style of the govt. Heaps of dirty tactics- just like any pre-vote lead up.

Good luck and may the best man or woman win.

US federal elections are held the first tuesday of November. State and local elections can have other dates as the Individual State determines, but most use the Federal date for most final elections .

In Mississippi (or at least DeSoto County) alcohol is not sold until the polls are closed.

Actually it is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. In the British system (Canada, NZ Australia, etc) the ruling party pick the opportune time to pick an election.

The votes have finished being counted. A close call:
40% for the present govt
39% for the challenger.
so the leaders are off to find some coalition partners to get a majority.

PS in Australia the winning faction needs a majority of two because one party member becomes the Speaker of the House so can't vote on day to day stuff.

The wording of the law is simply that it is the first tuesday of November unless that is the first day of the month. It does not require that there be a monday before that in November, whether that in fact is what happens is irrelavant. )
