Aside from the fact that the B-24's require a bigger base, no...

airfield size, but flying B24s from a size 4 airfield gives you more range and payload than B26s. The difference is thatthe damage rate for the B24 would be higher than the B26 in that case. Of course, IRL the maintenance requirements for a B24 were MUCH higher than for a B26.

Well, the first kick is that your B-26s can opperate from AF(3) and A(4). The B-24s operation from AF(5) and AF(6). So your deployment options with the B-26 are more. That's going to spread out your squadrons a little bit more, and made you less vulnerable than if you have a few "packed" airfields.

Flying B-26s require fewer supplies than B-24s.

It also depends on the losses that your B-24s sustain. If you upgrade too many sqdns, you'll never have enough B-24s in your pool to keep your active sqdns fleshed out once they're in combat.

But, if you've got the supplies, the airfield space, and the replacements, B-24s are a wonder thing.

B-24's can operate from level 4 airfield with reduced load and from level 5 with full load. All aircraft except B-29 (AF(7) for full load) can fly normally from airfield level 5 or higher. C-46 might be an exception, but I am not sure about transport plane airfield requirements.

This is why when playing with the user defined paths that all US medium bomber groups will be upgraded to B-24's.

That's pretty much what 8th Air Force did with their "user defined paths and upgrades"!

Early in the war you won't have tons of B-24s, so you are better off using B-26s (or other tactical bombers) than nothing (or B-18s which are worse than nothing).

And until you get good, long range escorts you will take heavy, costly losses of B-24s. 48 B-26s with P-40Bs or Es are much better against ships with fighter escort than 48 B-24s at long range with no escort (assuming that they fly).

A balance of forces is always the best...

Good luck -

Yes, your electron pilots will resent you, since you're asking them to train to fly the heavy buffs in the warzone. Also, you're messing around with the nice little org chart that an E-Ring cog produced for the Secretary of War. Finally, you've screwed the ordinance guys at SF since they now need to scrape together enough replacement parts to support your foolish decision. Are you looking forward to SPAM Turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas, General? :)

I believe you will hit ships more often with the B26s. That is purely belief, I have no data to back it up.

I don't believe it's ships they are thinking of using them against. Just call it a hunch.

I use B-17s and B-24s on alternating turns to hit Rabaul and such.

And there seem to be 125 B-24s entering the theater every month.

You may be right about that. I do know that B-25s seem to do well against enemy shipping, transports at least. I had some at PM in a game against AI and scored a lot of hits. However they didn't do very well against enemy warships, CAs, DDs etc.

I heard that bombers that drop bombs do well against shipping if their bombs they dropped hit the ship the bomber was trying to bomb.
