Sometimes when I capture these, I find that they are annexed directly into my Empire - eg, playing as France I attacked Hanover (British Protectorate) and upon capture it became solid blue.

But later on in the game, for reasons that are still beyond me, captured enemy protectorates remain as protectorates, but occupied by France - i.e. I get the diagonal and vertical stripes.

What to do???

Also, is there any way to make a protectorate of yours part of the Empire? I'm thinking of Flanders and the Netherlands which start as French protectorates in 1796 but were in reality annexed peacefully into France itself later on. Right now, the only method I can find is liberate and annex militarily, which is more than a bit daft.

If the protectorate is a single province you will inherit it after your siege (becomes part of your counter). If it is 2 or more provinces then each province will surrender to you and be occupied. There is a bug that you can not get all the provinces of a multiple province minor, even if it is not a protectorate. I assume this will be fixed in v1.2.

I have found no way to annex a friendly protectorate other then release and make war, which as you put it is a bit daft.

for Captureing Minors that are some ones elses protectorates

there were some bugs that have been fixed, in the beta, so now, most protectorates, if captured, should become your province

, freeing, liberateing, protectoring is being worked on, up in the air how well we are doing :)

Raliegh seems to be doing better at it then I am

hmmmm

one of these days, I will learn how to spell his name :)

Piedmont (or whatever it's called) is two provinces and an Austrian protectorate. I managed to annex its non capital province into France proper, but not Turin (capital). However, in my game Italia (one province minor) became a Turkish protectorate whilst I was at war with Italia. Upon capture of Italia, it wasn't annexed into France but had vertical brown stripes and diagonal blue stripes. Same goes for Tuscany, a one province minor that I declared war on but became a British protectorate whilst I was at war with it. Upon capture, this too was not incorporated into France. So, it isn't only >1 province enemy protectorates that don't get annexed by you upon capture - it happens also with one province minors.

Does the fact that Britain and Turkey are both empires make any difference?

Use your diplomats, guys. My favorite gambit is to make somebody's protectorate have an insurrection then coup it. I do this as well when it's a multi-province minor that I really...REALLY want. Or, heh, heh...that I want to deny someone else. Two dips with high ratings can cause an insurrection pretty easily, while it may take some while and some various owners before you can make the coup happen.

I do this with Naples almost every game because whomever is protecting it can eventually have over 400K Neopolitan troops for free. That's definitely not cricket.

it gets odd

a minor that is captured by your enemy first, and then you capture it, should act like a enemy province (hatched)

a enemy province that is protected, and you capture, should turn into your captured province

Piedmount, has 3 provinces, they also control a Island in the Med (Silcy I believe)

Coop is good, for taking over the land, but then you lose any troops they may have, or will have, if you make them a protectorate, you also gain there troops (the same as if you attack and take the land)

the value of Minors like Bavaria, Poland, is not there land mass, it is there Troops

(at times, Poland can have between 500,000 to 1,000,000 troops under arms)

Here's a shot to explain - the vertical stripes on Italia signify that it is a Turkish protectorate, yet I've occupied it (blue diagonal stripes, France). Is this working as designed or was France supposed to have annexed it directly? If this is WAD, could we have an explanation as to why enemy protectorates are sometimes annexed upon capture, and sometimes merely occupied?

Note also what happened to Flanders. I liberated it in the hope of annexing it to my empire by military conquest. When I declared war, they immediately offered to be a British protectorate. Bastards. However, I've found that by using Sneak Attack, I can get around this problem.

Here's my protectorate problem. Batavia is a British protectorate. As Sweden I declare war on Britain and capture both Batavian provinces.

When I capture them, they turn solid Swedish, in effect becoming my home provinces. I can no longer turn Batavia into a protectorate or liberate them outright because Batavia no longer exists on the country details list.

Some of these problems with Protectorates disappear with version 1.2.14. You'll find it much better playing than previous versions.
