I'm not to good with the "combined arms" style, I would like some help for the Russians as what a good force would generally consist of, i'm really talking about PBEM, computer opps can be beaten pretty easy.

That's interesting, Gun Nut, as I just made a posting about picking the Russians in a long campaign. For anyone who wants to go "big", then the fabled steamroller is for you. What time period do you want?

Around 1941 into 42 I find they seem to be quite weak in the early periods, maybe I just can't use them right, heck I mostly use the Germans!

The Russians are hard to use in early years, they dont get many shots and they run away alot...
Alot of AT guns and MGs might help.
Also their AA guns can be annoying to play against

Use machine guns to strip infantry from their vehicles, then use artillery to pin the infantry.

When the enemy armour advances without infantry support, use anti-tank guns to take out the tanks. Turn off the ATG's so they do not fire in your opponent's turn and do not fire more than twice to avoid being spotted. Make sure you suppress any infantry before using your ATG's

Use tanks in overwhelming numbers in very small frontages.

Use light mortars at close range to immobilise or suppress enemy tanks then finish the tank off with close assault. Kill the crews.

Concentrate your artillery stonks for utmost advantage to you.

Use cavalry to find gaps in the enemy line and exploit with fast tanks to attack the enemy artillery.

My advice kind of opposite.
For campain core use infantry + tanks in the proportion 3:2 or 2:1. Russian infantry very fragaile in the beginning of war, its use maily is spotting, and tanks do the killing. Don't use AT guns or many MG for campain core, use auxillary points for them if you are on defence. Mount your infantry on tank as much as possible, and move the rest on trucks (halftracks after 1943) Get Forward observer for directing artillery fire, 6-9 medium/heavy mortars or howtzers and ammo truks or dump. I wouldn't recommend 50mm mortars - they are hard to use. Then I'm buying infantry company I'm stripping them away. Auxilary force - alway buy recon to screen your core. If you are on defence buy auxillary MG and AT guns. If you are attacking buy a lot of fast moving infantry - motociclers, cavalry or ski for recon/spotting

My current core (starting WWII campin in 1939,)
HQ
2 infantry company (without motars)
heavy tank company (5 tanks)
light tank company (16 tank, upgrade to T34 later)
3 recon platoons (upgrade to cavalry or motociclers later)
medium mortar battary (9 mortars)
4 SPAA
2 ammo trucks
15 trucks
